Two New Restaurants Coming Soon Downtown: Speck Italian Eatery and Grand Rue

Two new restaurants were formally announced today in Downtown Columbus during a virtual showcase hosted by CASTO and The Edwards Companies. Speck Italian Eatery will open inside one of the retail spaces in the recently constructed The Nicholas building on High Street between Gay Street and Long Street, while Grand Rue launches across High in the former Cafe Brioso space.

Chef Josh Dalton of Veritas is involved in both projects, according to virtual event host Sydney Federer, Senior Leasing Director at CASTO. The original Speck Italian Eatery opened in 2019 in Delaware, focusing on a contemporary take on classic Italian cuisine. Grand Rue is a brand new concept described as a French Bistro.

Short North restaurant opening next month after lawsuit resolution

TownHall will be opening in Columbus after all.

The Short North restaurant and its Mandrake Rooftop bar, both owned by Cleveland-based restaurateur Bobby George, have resolved a lawsuit with the landlord at 800 N. High St.

An attorney representing George’s group said TownHall will open next month with Mandrake set to follow in the spring.

TownHall was on the verge of opening in the spring when the Covid-19 pandemic hit, but the two sides appeared to have disagreements that proceeded the pandemic-related shutdown.

Hot Chicken Takeover is now open at 435 Polaris Pkwy. in Westerville.

The fifth restaurant for the company (and fourth in Central Ohio) was expected to open over the summer, but like so many projects was delayed and altered by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“As a community-oriented business, we put considerable thought into how we open our Westerville location safely,” founder and CEO Joe DeLoss said in a news release. “Controlling potential lines and creating the space for appropriate social distancing continues to be top of mind for our team. Along those same lines, here are CU's annual year-end rundown of restaurants/bars openings and closings.  Usually, the openings outnumber the closings by a good margin.  For 2020, the openings were barely more than the closings:

Olive & Thyme Brings Mediterranean Fare to Clintonville

Clintonville lost a Panera, but gained a new local eatery in its place.

Olive & Thyme opened in late November 2020 at 4519 N. High St., offering an extensive menu of Lebanese and Mediterranean eats.

After accumulating two and a half decades of experience, Chef Rami Sabra was ready for the dream come true – opening his own restaurant. Fried Chicka Bang Expands to The Arena District

After just a few months of operation, pop-up restaurant Fried Chicka Bang is already expanding. The delivery/pickup business opened at the end of September near Polaris Fashion Place and launches this week in the Arena District. Uniquely, the pop-up operates from within existing Sunny Street Cafe locations, selling fried chicken sandwiches at night after the breakfast spot has closed its doors in the early afternoon.

“We weren’t sure what to expect, but were hopeful since takeout options seemed to be doing well since everyone was staying at home,” stated Maria Swallie, one of the owners/operators of Fried Chicka Bang and Director of Off-Premise Business Development at Sunny Street Cafe. “We have been blown away by the support and amount of orders.”

The new Arena District location at 277 W. Nationwide Blvd. allows the delivery reach of Fried Chicka Bang to expand into Downtown Columbus and surrounding neighborhoods.

Basil Expands with New Spot in Clintonville & Cloud Kitchen

The pandemic hasn’t stopped Basil from doubling its footprint, growing from two to four locations.

The Thai restaurant has taken over the space vacated last summer by BLunch at 2973 N. High St. in Clintonville. Owner Rhome Ruanphae says they’ve always loved the neighborhood and the fun, close-knit community, but finding a space over the last few years had been a challenge.

The BLunch space in particular represents an opportunity to get the restaurant back on High Street. Basil’s Short North restaurant, 1124 N. High St., closed in 2018 to make way for Bristol Republic, a partnership between Ruanphae and Bodega owner Brian Swanson.

Red Robin deal gives Donatos a national reach

Donatos Pizza will have more than doubled in size in two years thanks to its partnership with Red Robin Gourmet Burgers.  Trade publication Nation’s Restaurant News reports that the Colorado-based burger chain will add Donatos pizza at another 120 restaurants nationwide this year.  Donatos already shares space on Red Robin menus at 79 locations for the burger brand.

( . . . )

The growth of the deal will take the Gahanna-based pizzeria from approximately 160 locations in 2019 when it first tested the partnership with Red Robin to around 380 by year end. ... The predominately West Coast Red Robin has opened up the map for Donatos, which was concentrated primarily in the Midwest and the Atlantic Coast.

But 30 stores all at once in one city was nuts.

FUSIAN Adds Two More Locations in Central Ohio

At a time when many restaurants are struggling, FUSIAN has continued to grow.

The Columbus-based fast-casual sushi chain has opened two new restaurants in Central Ohio – 79 S. State St. in Westerville and 7721 Sawmill Rd. in Dublin. Both are former locations of now-defunct build-your-own pizza concept Pizza Cucinova.

Co-Founder Stephan Harman says, “We’ve always had our sights on Dublin and Westerville and some more locations outside of 270.”

The Pizza Cucinova locations provided what Harman described as a win-win-win of a situation. FUSIAN had an existing relationship with the brand’s parent company, Sbarro, and could take over the leases, expanding their brand and bringing FUSIAN closer to home for more diners – something that’s especially important as more folks work from home. (FUSIAN didn’t go four for four in taking over Pizza Cucinova locations because of existing restaurants in Grandview and at Easton. FUSIAN also has an eatery in Clintonville.)

The Pit BBQ Grille Opens this Weekend in Clintonville

As of noon on Saturday, January 23, The Pit BBQ Grille will open its doors in Clintonville at 4219 N. High St.

Fans of the growing barbecue joint can expect the same fresh, house-made signature menu as The Pit’s other Central Ohio locations. The main attractions are the Polish Boy and Polish Girl – a beef polish sausage topped with fresh cut fries, coleslaw, and PIT sauce, with the addition of pulled pork, pulled chicken or brisket for the girl version.

Friends and Co-Owners Chimdi Chekwa, Bryant Browning, D’Andre Martin and Mike Johnson say the family recipes they are serving to the masses are made with love. Four hand-shredded cheeses make their way into Mildred’s Mac & Cheese, while Cece’s greens are an eight-hour process.

TownHall Approaches Long-Awaited Opening in Short North

Just over three years after it was initially announced, TownHall is opening its doors in the Short North at 792 N. High St.

An exact date is to be determined (check back here for updates), but Communications Director Kayla Barnes ays Columbus will have its TownHall by the end of the week.

Opening day has been a long-time coming for the Cleveland-based restaurant. Dates were being finalized last February into March when the coronavirus pandemic struck, upending restaurant operations.

As for why now, “There’s been so much excitement internally and externally about our opening, and especially for our team, we always want to make sure we rise to the occasion, and as they say, if you’re waiting for the perfect time, you’re going to be waiting forever,” Barnes says.

GENJIGO Heads Downtown for 8th Location

Hot of the heels of opening their seventh restaurant in Westerville, GENJIGO has already started work on its next location.

Momo Ghar Debuts First Standalone Restaurant in Dublin

When Momo Ghar announced it was stepping back from joining North Market Bridge Park, it was with plans to open their own brick-and-mortar.

To the excitement of momo fans on the northwest side, that day has arrived. Momo Ghar opened the doors to its first standalone restaurant at 2800 Festival Lane in Dublin on Thursday, January 28.

One big reason drove Owner Phuntso Lama to search for their own location versus expanding within the market system: A larger kitchen. More kitchen space means more menu items for Momo Ghar in Dublin.

Pop-Up Boxwood Biscuit Co. Makes it Permanent in Short North

Pop-up Boxwood Biscuit Co. is graduating to a permanent space.

The biscuit-focused operation which ran out of Law Bird Bar, 740 S. High St. in the Brewery District, from August to December 2020 will head for its own brick-and-mortar at 19 W. Russel St. in Short North.

Boxwood Biscuit Co. is a collaboration between bar owners Luke Pierce and Annie Williams Pierce and chef Tyler Minnis, formerly of Angry Bear Kitchen and The Market Italian Village.

Initially, the operation started to keep four-month-old Law Bird’s kitchen occupied and cash flowing during the pandemic.

Cluck Norris Added to Budd Dairy Lineup

Budd Dairy Food Hall is announcing a new vendor ahead of its anticipated spring debut. Cluck Norris will join the nine-kitchen lineup, replacing previously announced vendor Darista.

Serving up “ass-kickin’ chicken,” Cluck Norris will offer a streamlined menu of crispy chicken dishes. Chicken tenders are hand-cut and dipped to order, served with a choice of sauce, including Cluck’s original, sweet chili, BBQ, sriracha, and HOLY CLUCK!! There will also be several chicken sandwiches and a brief appearance from another animal with the Pig Tenderloin. Fries, fresh lemonade and tea make it a meal.

“We are thrilled to bring this whimsical concept to life while working alongside the diverse lineup of talented chef partners at Budd Dairy Food Hall,” says Josh Yosick, the chef behind the concept. “The Cluck Norris menu is small, but mighty, with black-belt quality dishes that have been carefully thought out and perfected to complement the fun, hip atmosphere of the food hall.”
