The two-story Latin restaurant, which takes over a long-empty Wendy’s storefront at North High and Spring streets in Columbus, will open in the next two weeks, offering a small-plate menu and full entrees to lunch and dinner guests. Barrio’s menu, he said, is inspired by Argentine and Spanish cuisine, with 20 cold tapas, such as marinated olives and assorted ceviches; 20 hot tapas, including empenadas; and entrees of steak, pork, chicken and fish. Barrio means community or neighborhood, said Mathes, who also co-owns Due Amici on Gay Street, "and I want to bring that feeling of community to another restaurant," as well as to the neighborhood that he calls home. Mathes said he and his wife are committed to living Downtown, noting that he bought the building whose first floor houses Due Amici to be his home and office. Jeff Mathes has opened Barrio at North High and Spring streets at the site of a former Wendy's. March 13, 200916 yr Buckeye Hall of Fame Cafe put into receivership Business First of Columbus - by Dan Eaton Friday, March 6, 2009 The enthusiasm of Buckeyes' fans is seemingly boundless, but that doesn't appear to be true for their willingness to dine amid Ohio State University memorabilia. The Buckeye Hall of Fame Cafe has gone into receivership as it faced falling sales at the 50,000-square-foot facility. The restaurant and meeting space at 1421 Olentangy River Road will reorganize to make the business more profitable, including a possible relocation to a smaller space. "The restaurant business has fallen off," said Jon Self, principal with Columbus-based Hall of Fame Development Corp. "We've suffered the same consequences. It's been a double whammy, banquet and restaurant business. We've been losing it on both sides." Craig and Laura Decker started the Wine Guy Wine Shop Wine Bar and Bistro in Pickerington in 2005. They expanded the store to include a restaurant in 2007 and opened a second shop and bistro at Gahanna’s Creekside development last year. But by early 2010, that portfolio is expected to grow to six stores, including one downtown in the former North High Street home of Experience Columbus, the city’s convention agency. The business is also planning sites in Dublin and near Grandview Heights that will offer more than wine and a meal, and the chain’s first shop in Cincinnati. “It became a monster overnight,” Craig Decker said. “This wasn’t something we’d been planning by any means.” MORE: http://columbus.bizjournals.com/columbus/stories/2009/03/16/story2.html?ana=e_ph

March 16, 200916 yr New Powell Chipotle reflects chain's 'green' goal Tuesday, March 10, 2009 By Bill Chronister, The Columbus Dispatch When the newest Chipotle Mexican Grill in central Ohio opens this week at 9733 Sawmill Parkway in Powell, patrons might notice that some of the stainless-steel decor has given way to white ceramic tile. "Chipotle is switching out stainless because of the green movement," said Megan Brown, a business-development official with Glavan Feher. The Columbus architectural firm has designed about 300 of the 830 or so Chipotles in the U.S. "White tile is easily recycled, while the stainless steel has a coating that makes it more difficult to recycle. March 16, 200916 yr Restaurant Review | Banana Bean Cafe 'Floribbean' delicacies flourish in new location Thursday, March 12, 2009 BY JON CHRISTENSEN FOR THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH The original Banana Bean Cafe in German Village had several handicaps: few seats, no wine or beer, limited hours and no reservations. Those factors made it difficult to enjoy the flavorful "Floribbean" cuisine. With the August opening of a funky, larger facility on Greenlawn Avenue across from Lou Berliner Park, those problems are over. (The original location, at 410 E. Whittier St., remains open as a lunch-and-brunch operation on Fridays through Sundays.) March 23, 200916 yr Bread Basket Family Bakery | www.gahannabreadbasket.com Crusty creations retain first-rate quality Thursday, March 19, 2009 - 9:00 AM By Jon Christensen for the Columbus Dispatch Bread Basket, the artisanal bakery that opened in the Gahanna area in 2005, has relocated to Creekside Plaza in the heart of the city. Moving the artisanal production of food from one location to a brand-new one isn't always a cinch. In the case of Bread Basket, however, owner and baker Bryan Tyler has been able to reproduce the heart of his production: crusty breads. http://www.dispatch.com/live/content/weekender/stories/2009/03/19/9A_OFF19X.ART_ART_03-19-09_T13_TAD8OL9.html?sid=101
March 23, 200916 yr CAFE NAPOLITANA - 40 N. HIGH STREET Traditional tastes attract Downtown crowds Thursday, March 19, 2009 - 9:01 AM By Tim Feran, The Columbus Dispatch Anyone can throw some dough with tomato sauce on a platter and call it pizza. But only a pizzaiolo -- a pizza craftsman -- can make something with a taste that represents a tradition. At Cafe Napolitana, such food is made by Palmo Aracri. Because he was born 44 years ago in Reggio di Calabria -- a city on the toe of the Italian boot, across the Strait of Messina from Sicily -- he has all the credentials to be a pizzaiolo. http://www.dispatch.com/live/content/weekender/stories/2009/03/19/9A_ROW19.ART_ART_03-19-09_T14_TAD8OO7.html?sid=101
March 23, 200916 yr New place, same philosophy for Northstar Café team Business First of Columbus - by Dan Eaton Friday, March 20, 2009 The owners of Northstar Cafe have given their new restaurant a glamorous name, but the menu will be a collection of comforting favorites. Third & Hollywood is expected to open by mid-year at 1433 W. Third Ave; a storefront that has housed Gibby's Grandview and E.J.'s Canyon Cafe. That philosophy will translate to Third & Hollywood, although the Northstar menus will not. There will be no menu crossover between the restaurants. All salads, sandwiches and entrees will be new creations, though he is keeping the specifics under wraps. http://columbus.bizjournals.com/columbus/stories/2009/03/23/newscolumn1.html
March 23, 200916 yr <b>New Dagwood Challenge Champion: Mark Lyle</b> By Walker | March 21, 2009 <img src="http://www.columbusunderground.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/dagwood.jpg"> Roughly a year ago, a group of Columbus Underground regulars set out to complete “<a href="http://www.columbusunderground.com/the-dagwood-challenge-video">The Dagwood Challenge</a>” at The Ohio Deli on the south side of Columbus. Seven valiant men completed the task: to eat the massive Dagwood sandwich with a side of fries in under 30 minutes. Zach “Cyclist” Henkel finished first that day with a time of 11 minutes, but no one was able to break the record holder Josh Matko who finished the sandwich in 6 minutes. March 23, 200916 yr <b>Rise & Dine Adds $5 Value Menu to Lunch</b> By Walker | March 16, 2009 <img src="http://www.columbusunderground.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/risedine.jpg"> The fast-growing, breakfast-lunch chain Rise & Dine Restaurants, Inc. announced today that it is reviving the original “value menu” with meals inspired by the Chicago-style hot dog. “The value menu was not just a fast food chain idea,” Joe Deavenport, Rise & Dine Restaurants co-owner and COO, said. “It was an invention of the entrepreneurial hot dog street vendors that roamed Chicago during the Great Depression. They offered people an affordable and flavorful meal, and in that same spirit, we have concocted our own take on the old-American favorite.” MORE: http://www.columbusunderground.com/rise-dine-adds-5-value-menu-to-lunch
