August 14, 200915 yr As reported by Walker Evans in the Columbus Underground... Latitude 41 Adds New Gay Street Patio Latitude 41, located at the corner of Gay Street and Third Street (inside the Columbus Renaissance Hotel), has opened up the side of their restaurant and added a large new patio facing Gay Street. The patio is scheduled to open this weekend, and will seat approximately 50 people. The patio will be open for brunch, lunch, and dinner customers. More information can be found online at www.Latitude41Restaurant.com.

August 14, 200915 yr Morton's closed in downtown Columbus. Morton's remains open in Cleveland and Cincinnati. Thank you for repeating what was reported in the article I posted. Your very welcome! I am glad you're welcome. However, I was giving you a chance to explain why you repeated what was reported in the posted article. Care to do so now?
August 14, 200915 yr Yeah, I don't think it's really been that bad of a week. For the most part, the restaurant scene in Columbus has remained fairly strong during the recession. As for Morton's... the few times we went, I always thought the food and service were pretty stellar. That being said, the news isn't too shocking (other than the abruptness). High-end restaurants are hurting across the board, and Morton's was a pretty pricey place to go eat. They've had a lot of new steakhouse competition enter the market since 1991 and while their secluded old-school setup was very appealing to many, I think they were overdue for a renovation after 18 years. I'm sure their lack of a patio has been hurting them since the smoking ban. And with loads of new general restaurant competition in the Arena District and Short North, they really weren't standing out as much as they should have been.
August 15, 200915 yr Bingo. If Morton's was in, say, the Cap, it'd be more successful. Really, it belongs in the German Village. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
August 16, 200915 yr I agree that a move just a little bit closer to the Convention Center or Arena would have been a pretty smart one if they were in a better financial situation overall. Upscale steakhouses rely pretty heavily on "expense account" traffic for regular business. More of that type of traffic has moved in that direction, and Hyde Park seems to be doing pretty well based off their recent expansions to accommodate more conferences and large business parties. I'd say that if Morton's is planning on returning to the Columbus market in the next 3-5 years (and I would be surprised if they don't) a spot either in the new Convention Center hotel or a spot close to the Grandview Yard hotel would make a lot of sense for them.
August 16, 200915 yr Or...sadly, Polaris. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
August 16, 200915 yr I think someone once complained about the disappearing sidewalk space that's being taken over for other purposes, but I am still digging the outdoor seating, especially on the refreshened bi-directional Gay.
August 16, 200915 yr ^I was lamenting the excessive narrowing of the Gay street sidewalks alongside the new condos further east. I have no issue with narrowing of the sidewalks for patios, however doing it simply to accommodate decorative sidewalk furniture and high-maintenance flowerbeds seems counter-productive.
August 16, 200915 yr I didn't really think they were that narrow when I walked Gay Street a month ago, but I can see where it can become an issue. I was walking a DT Cincinnati street Friday evening, and me and a friend was having to constantly weave and dodge newspaper vending boxes, random assortments of poles and fixtures, parking meters...
August 17, 200915 yr ^Pedestrians heading in both directions would pretty much have to walk single file, though that's probably not a pressing issue at most hours of the day. This is only near the condos; west of 4th it's fine.
August 17, 200915 yr So what you're saying is that the sidewalks are a little bit too narrow during a few hours of the day on one block of one street due to decorative plantings. Man. And I thought Detroit had problems. ;)
August 17, 200915 yr There's not much reason to head east of 4th on Gay unless you live there. High foot traffic is where the businesses are to the west. I'm glad to see more places adding patios like Barrio, even if they're not place I tend to frequent they do lend to the urban ambiance.
August 17, 200915 yr So what you're saying is that the sidewalks are a little bit too narrow during a few hours of the day on one block of one street due to decorative plantings. Man. And I thought Detroit had problems. ;) Ha ha ha!
August 23, 200915 yr Morton's is closing Downtown steakhouse Thursday, August 13, 2009 - 3:12 AM By Marla Matzer Rose, THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH ... The restaurant, which opened at 280 N. High St. in 1991, is one of four closed this year by Chicago-based Morton's Restaurant Group. ... http://www.dispatch.com/live/content/business/stories/2009/08/13/mortons_closes.ART_ART_08-13-09_A8_2VEOK94.html?sid=101 Funny, I thought Morton's was based in New York, Queens County (one of NYC's five boroughs) to be exact. Oh, well, Chicago lost Bank One to New York-based Chase, so that evens the score!
August 25, 200915 yr An older article that I'm just getting around to posting about two bars being sued for violating the statewide smoking ban - one in Columbus and one in Cincinnati. ZENO'S IN COLUMBUS, O'NEAL'S IN CINCINNATI State sues two bars over smoking ban Saturday, August 15, 2009 By Timothy Magaw, The Columbus Dispatch The state is suing two bars for violating the state's 2-year-old smoking ban. The bars -- Zeno's Victorian Village in Columbus and O'Neal's Tavern in Cincinnati -- are the targets of the first lawsuits filed by the attorney general's office. They were filed on behalf of the Ohio Department of Health. Local officials have cited Zeno's for nine violations and fined the bar more than $28,000. O'Neal's has been cited 12 times and fined more than $21,000. The state filed suit against Zeno's yesterday in Franklin County Common Pleas Court. It did the same against O'Neal's in Hamilton County. "Sometimes that wakes them up right away and helps us resolve the matter," Attorney General Richard Cordray said. It's scheduled to open in September at 20 N. High St., in the space formerly filled by the Original Soupman.
August 29, 200915 yr Great news about a new restaurant replacing the vacant Soupman space at Broad & High. Owners Kevin and Lori Ames are really starting to literally "corner the market" here. Two restaurants at the northeast corner (Lola's Cafe and now Burgers, Dogs and Fries). One restaurant at the southwest corner (Cinco). If the Ames' buy the Starbucks at the northwest corner and park a food cart on the southeast Statehouse corner, they could have ventures at all four corners of Broad and High!
September 3, 200915 yr Graffiti Burger, Five Guys set to go head-to-head along Fifth Avenue Burger aficionados will have another place to sate their cravings in the Grandview Heights area. TCH Restaurant Group Inc., the Tampa, Fla.-based franchisee of Five Guys Burgers and Fries, plans to open its fifth store in the area at the Shoppes at Fifth Avenue, a few blocks from Columbus-based Graffiti Burger’s new restaurant. It has been a big year for burger joints in Central Ohio. Five Guys debuted in the area and will grow to six locations by year-end with a restaurant at Avery Square in Dublin under construction. Graffiti Burger, which also sports a menu big on burgers and shakes, opened its first restaurant in May. Its Fifth Avenue shop is scheduled to open this fall. Owner Jim Torski said the Polaris and OSU neighborhoods are on his radar. Dorfman said Worthington Square and Bethel Road are among Five Guys’ next targets, with four possible locations to be added next year. Let the burger wars commence. September 3, 200915 yr Dessert gig leads baker to open Clintonville shop Bakery names often aren’t as direct as Simple Sweets. Jackie and Matt Latif opened their Clintonville bakery last month – the first restaurant venture for the couple. The 800-square-foot space, at 2991 N. High St., is a few doors from Lavash Cafe, the Mediterranean eatery owned and operated by Matt Latif’s uncle, Nasir Latif. When Nasir Latif opened Lavash Cafe in December, he recruited Jackie to make the desserts. That stoked her entrepreneurial fire. She and her husband shopped around for a space and wound up sharing the same strip with Lavash Cafe. “We looked in the Grandview Heights area and Clintonville – a few others,” she said. “There’s plenty of traffic, foot traffic. We wanted to be in a place with a real community feel.” Read more at http://columbus.bizjournals.com/columbus/stories/2009/08/24/newscolumn1.html
September 5, 200915 yr From here: http://www.columbusunderground.com/swensons-eventually-coming-to-columbus <b>Swensons Eventually Coming to Columbus</b> By Walker | August 30, 2009 12:15pm <img src="http://www.columbusunderground.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/swensons.png"> The popular Akron-based burger drive-in Swensons is turning 75 this year, and the Akron Beacon Journal has posted up a great look at the past, present, and future of their business. There are currently seven Swensons locations, all in North Eastern Ohio with an eighth planned for Fort Wayne, Indiana. The article does include one great nugget of information for Central Ohioans though: <i>Owner Steve Thompson expects to open a Swensons in Columbus at some point, which he will own. ”I have to. It’s the only growing city in Ohio,” he said.</i> So there you go. No date… no location… but an eye on Columbus for expansion.
September 5, 200915 yr <b>Brēzel Pretzels - Rolled Up Goodness</b> By Anne | August 31, 2009 9:45am <img src="http://www.columbusunderground.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/brezel.jpg"> When Brittany Baum and Maria Gentile met, they were working in the communications world together. After a few years, they became great friends and discovered they shared a passion for cooking and a love of pretzels. Brittany has been to Germany a few times and “fell in love with Bavarian pretzels.” The two decided to start perfecting recipes and selling them and brēzel Pretzels was born. Brēzel is an old German word for pretzel. They picked a unique name for their company because they wanted people to know that they are different. Brēzel pretzels are made in the Bavarian style which means “they are bigger and more bread-like than a stadium soft pretzel.” Eventually they would like to open up a shop in Columbus to make and sell their pretzels. But for now, you can order them online, and also find them at a few local farmers’ markets. Rad Dog is also selling a “pretzel bun” they have created. They say that the farmers’ markets have been a wonderful experience, leading to sold out booths every time! They will be at the Clintonville Farmers’ Market on Saturday mornings this October if you’d like to go try one. Read More: http://www.columbusunderground.com/brezel-pretzels-rolled-up-goodness

The new concept will also be located in a former Don Pablo’s space at 1200 Noe-Bixby Road near the intersection of East Main Street and 270 between Whitehall and Reynoldsburg. It opened in November 2007 as Cornerstone Coffee and lasted just over a year. It reopened as Coffee and More this spring, but only lasted a few months. Now, the space is back as the Rendezvous Cafe. The offerings look to be about the same as the past two iterations. A variety of coffee and expresso drinks, some other cold beverages, and a few small food/snack items. Their posted hours are 7am to 3:30pm Monday through Friday, and 8:30am to 3:00pm on Saturday. Has anyone stopped in yet to give it a shot?
September 22, 200915 yr OSU gets taste of Korean frozen yogurt Tuesday, September 22, 2009 - 3:06 AM By Bill Chronister, The Columbus Dispatch Red Mango, which landed this week at 1866 N. High St., across from the Wexner Center for the Arts at Ohio State University, is one of the fastest-growing concepts in North America. Red Mango, Pinkberry and Yogurtland are leading the way in returning frozen yogurt to its roots. Back before frozen-yogurt purveyors began using ice-cream flavor profiles, the product was tart and tangy -- and low in sugar and fat. For Bobby Park, franchisee and director of franchise operations for Red Mango in the Midwest, the High Street store is his second. His first was in the Indianapolis area. He and area developer David Lee expect to have three to five stores in Ohio within two years. September 22, 200915 yr Moving in Downtown Don and Anna Steere expect to open the Plantain Cafe at 77 E. Gay St. by the end of October, serving up traditional Cuban-style food for Downtown lunch-goers. "We'll have Cuban sandwiches and other good Cuban dishes that her (Anna's) grandparents would make for me," Mr. Steere said. Also likely to be on the menu are media noche, pan con lechon and ropa vieja sandwiches, and picadillo and carne con papas plates.
September 22, 200915 yr Back in Brownstone The Brownstone Lounge and Event Center has opened on the upper floors of the old Brownstone on Main, at 122 E. Main Street. September 23, 200915 yr From: http://www.columbusunderground.com/graffiti-burger-opens-new-location-on-5th-avenue Graffiti Burger Opens New Location on 5th Avenue This Wednesday, Graffiti Burger will be opening up their second restaurant at 1505 West 5th Avenue, in the 5XNW neighborhood. The original Dublin location has become a bit of a cult favorite and this new location promises more of the same: black angus burgers, fresh-cut fries, and hand-dipped milkshakes. Customers of Graffiti Burger have often compared the food to that of Five Guys or In-N-Out Burger. The limited menu choices and higher-quality ingredients keeps the experience much more focused than the more traditional fast food burger chains. Both locations are housed in recently closed Starbucks coffee shops. If this is any sort of trend, then perhaps we might see additional Graffiti Burger locations opening in The Short North, Worthington, Westerville and on East Main Street where other Starbucks have recently closed. Speculation aside, the owners have publicly hinted that their next location will be in the University District near OSU. September 24, 200915 yr How many starbucks closed in C-bus? All of them? Are you freaking kidding?!? From that article you referenced, you would get six Starbucks closing in the central Ohio region. Did you really think that there were six Starbucks within the entire 1.5 million Columbus/Central Ohio region? From a quick Google search, I just counted 68 Starbucks locations remaining in central Ohio. So yes punch they ALL closed.
September 24, 200915 yr ^maybe this will help to keep tabs on their status (lol): http://www.starbuckseverywhere.net/Columbus.htm http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/
September 24, 200915 yr I'm not surprised that e-v-don would try and take a cheap shot at Columbus. And I'm not surprised that e-v-don would so profoundly miss the point. The point was not using the total number of Starbucks as some point of pride. The point was to counteract an obvious putdown of Columbus by punch. Columbus has changed alot since e-v-don left, what is it 30 years ago? But apparently your feelings toward Columbus have not changed since then. You still hold some kind of bitter feeling. Sad.
September 25, 200915 yr How many starbucks closed in C-bus? All of them? FYI, the 6 that closed recently in Columbus was part of a national move to close 600 stores across the country. More info here: http://columbus.bizjournals.com/columbus/stories/2008/07/14/daily34.html
September 26, 200915 yr Bah. I didn't realize Starbucks was closing the Short North location. I'd been craving a Pumpkin Spice latte all afternoon and was waiting for half time in the OSU game before heading there to get one. But then I arrived and found out the store was closed. So now I either have to head down to the arena district, up to the South Campus Gateway, or over near the King Dr/Olentangy River Road intersection. (yes I could go to Cup O' Joe or one of the other coffee shops in the neighborhood, but I was specifically craving a pumpkin spice latte from Starbucks)

September 28, 200915 yr I did not mean any insult to Columbus. When I graduated in '01 the only starbucks near campus were the two on 5th, which are now closed. When I would come back and visit I noticed they put one in near the cap, which is now closed. Take it as a point of pride that Starbucks was not able to knock out the local competition. Screw Starbucks, you have Stauffs. Here in New Orleans, they very much take pride in the fact that they have two local coffee chains, PJs and Community Coffee.
September 28, 200915 yr Thanks. I probably shouldn't have come back so strong. But someone has to stand up for the capital city every now and then, right? And you're right about Starbucks vs. local competition. Short North is really jam-packed with coffee shops, restaurants and bars.
October 1, 200915 yr Neat Dispatch article about a couple that literally cornering the lunchtime dining market at one corner of the Capitol Square. They have just opened their third restaurant at the corner of Broad and High. They are taking over the ground floor retail space in the Broad & High project vacated by the Original Soupman. Keeping it simple, tasty: Couple opening third place with limited-menu concept, emphasizing freshness of wholesome ingredients

October 2, 200915 yr That Top 20 List was from 2008. Is there a new one? Ah so it is! That's what I get for posting at 1AM! I knew I saw a Fall 2009 restaurant list in the Dispatch last week. But when I googled this, I clicked on the Fall 2008 list by mistake. Actually, I'm glad I did. Now we can compare the 2008 list with the 2009 list. The Dispatch changed their 2009 format to include a Top 10 listing only - no next 10 list was included. DISPATCH TOP 10 LIST - FALL 2009 Barcelona | 263 E. October 2, 200915 yr Cool, thanks! I searched for it too, but didn't see it. I usually post these on CU, but they typically only get a round of BOOS directed at Mr. Christensen for his omissions (namely, Alana's).
October 3, 200915 yr NANCY'S HOME COOKING Celebrated restaurant to reopen next month Tuesday, September 29, 2009 - 5:13 PM By Gary Seman Jr., ThisWeek Staff Writer Nancy's Home Cooking, the iconic Clintonville restaurant known as much for its inexpensive meals as its rich social history, is expected to reopen Nov. 1. Plans for improvements to the hood, fire suppression and ventilation systems recently were submitted to the city of Columbus. Owner Sheila Davis Hahn said she fully expects the upgrades to meet city code. The comfort-food emporium closed June 1 when then-owner Cindy King said that because of health and financial reasons, she could no longer afford to keep the restaurant open. News of Nancy's closing spread quickly throughout the Columbus dining community, and patrons formed lines out of the door for weeks as four decades of casual-cuisine history appeared to be coming to an end at 3133 N. High Street. Customers and friends of Cindy King, whose generous spirit engendered legions of fans, donated more than $10,000 for the remodeling effort. Lowe's also agreed to kick in material and manpower for a new floor. That's about all that will change at the 26-seat restaurant. The bill of fare, including the legendary chicken over homemade noodles and mashed potatoes, will be the same. One modification: Breakfast will be served all day. October 3, 200915 yr I haven't been to downtown Upper Arlington for awhile so I thought I'd stop in at one of the only two places that give me any reason to go: Dino's Cappuccinos & UA Pizza & Meatballs. I heard the latter was closed and I also found that in the same block Dino's was closed as was another retail space on the other end of the block. So almost the whole side of this block is "for rent" in just months. It says a lot about UA culture that residents by and large do not want to support a community-oriented downtown and would rather just use it solely for high-end shopping. That and the fact that when residents had a chance to create a sizeable urban downtown where the Kingsdale shopping center is they instead chose to go once again with strip-malls. Before: After:
October 7, 200915 yr NANCY'S I used to go there and litterally try to fill my esophagus once my belly was full. Now that is the type of Columbus I love and miss!
October 11, 200915 yr We got a "giant" Portofino Pizza tonight. I didn't think it would be that big! I could barely get the pizza through the door! I think I had to bring it through diagonally.
