Was the pizza done "Columbus style"?  I ask because I came across an older CMHGourmand story about the origins of the Columbus Style way of serving pizza.

From the article: "So what is Columbus style pizza? Square cut (AKA Tavern Cut) for sure, some say this facilitates sharing.  The crust is thin, the bottom has a dusting of cornmeal and there is not much of a “ring”/crust at the end for holding your slice.  Easy to find examples of Columbus style pizza are Donatos and Massey’s."

Seems to be doing decent. I have a buddy that works for the company that redid the place. He said the opening of Columbus brewing has helped push some more traffic.

I'm glad other people notice that too. I always thought Columbus stood out in terms of pizza. The way its made and the high number of independent pizza restaurants. Hell, look at all the options in the Old North alone. I wonder if the guy who wrote that was inspired by my post about how distinct Columbus pizza is. I never hear anyone else talk about it but Columbus pizza is pretty exceptional and unique.

Portofinos is cut in squares but it's not "edge to edge" toppings, cheese and tomato sauce like Donatos. Masseys is awesome. Don Ginos has the best pizza on the west side though outside of Donatos IMO. Josies Pizza in Franklinton is the bomb as well. The pizza there is ridiculously greasy lol. I like Columbus' pizza options. Honestly though, I didn't think Portofino's pizza was that great (pretty bland) but the size was impressive. We get 5 bucks off the next giant pizza so that makes it only like 15 bucks for the next one.

I ate Ding Ho takeout a few days ago. The War Su Gai is amazing! I'm very partial to west side restaurants  :-P Seriously, they're 1000x better than Mark Pis (ridiculously overrated, not what they used to be and only good for their buffet).

I think the next pizza I'm going to get is Donatos. I never get tired of it and there's one only 7 blocks south of me in The Short. I love dipping Donatos pizza in ranch but Donatos is so stingey with how many ranch packets you're allowed to get.

^ I always liked the pizza in Columbus (30 years ago). I remember native New Yorkers who lived there and then moved back to NY would always take an obnoxiously superior attitude about it. Most NY pizza is okay, not great. The trend among foodies (which obviously doesn't reflect the masses here) for the last few years has been a competition to open the most "authentic" Neapolitan pizza place--with imported ingredients--and made in ovens reaching ten million degrees--with ridiculously high prices to match. I wonder if that's going on in Columbus...

Importing ingredients is pointless unless we absolutely have to. For one thing, it's a huge waste of energy resources. It causes stuff to be way too overpriced. I worked at an Italian restaurant where everything was imported. The pizza was 12 bucks for one about 9 inches wide. It barely had any flavor and wasn't practical because they refused to cut it into slices (they don't do that in the owner's native region of Italy). I'm not paying 12 bucks for a personal size pizza with nothing but friggin Pesto, artichokes, and a very light amount of goat cheese on it. Gimme a break! lol Authentic doesn't always mean better. I think America improved a lot of foreign food.

<b>“Skillet” Opens Today in old Banana Bean Location</b>

By Walker | October 7, 2009 2:00pm

<img src="http://www.columbusunderground.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/skillet.jpg">

The original Banana Bean location on Whittier Avenue has had their windows papered up and business closed recently, with a bit of a secretive air as to what was going on inside. Today, Angie Caskey, one of the owners of the Banana Bean Cafe, along with her son and husband are relaunching the space with the soft opening of Skillet, a new restaurant concept they’re describing as “Rustic Urban Food”. Their full menu isn’t available online yet, but they have mentioned that their soft opening includes offerings such as a Grilled Jerk Pork Burger (topped with Honeycrisp Apple Slaw and Double Smoked Cherrywood Bacon, served on a Grilled Brioche Roll) and a Black Bean Ravioli (served with Duck Confit with Roasted Corn, Poblanos, Spanish Manchego, and Smoked Paprika Cream).

The location will only be open for lunch from 11am to 3pm Tue-Sun during the first two weeks before expanding for dinner and brunch starting October 20th. We’ll post up a link to the menu once it is made available.

<b>Local Entrepreneurs Resume Chipotle Delivery</b>

By Walker | October 12, 2009 4:00pm

<img src="http://www.columbusunderground.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/deliver-my-burrito.jpg">

Back in May, we announced the launch of a local business that would deliver piping-hot Chipotle burritos throughout Columbus. The business was shut down three days later after Chipotle asked them to cease and desist. But it looks as if a mutual agreement as been reached between the two companies, and business at DeliverMyBurrito.com is resuming effective immediately.

Delivery charges range from $5 to $20 depending on your order size, and delivery time is said to be within 30 minutes. Delivery locations include Downtown, German Village, OSU Campus Area, Reynoldsburg, Dublin, Gahanna, Westerville, Worthington, and Polaris.

<b>Mazzah Mediterranean Cafe Opening in Grandview</b>

Walked down Grandview Ave today and noticed a new restaurant that looked almost ready to open right next to Great Clips and across the street from Thom’s of Grandview. They had tables set up and a menu board and looked like they were putting the finishing touches on things. The sign on the window said “Mazzah Mediterranean Cafe Coming Soon”. It looks like a very small cafe/carryout type of place. I’m not sure if this is the same concept but there’s a restaurant in Boise, Idaho with almost the same name that also looks really affordable. Here’s the link to that restaurant’s Yelp. Anyone know anything else about this new place?

Sugardaddy’s Sumptuous Sweeties was founded in Columbus in 2005 and currently operates from a single retail location and kitchen facility located near the Polaris Mall. “We are all about brownies and blondies and all things brownie-related,” said Mark Ballard, Co-Founder & Co-CEO at Sugardaddy’s. “We offer 17 different flavors, and everything is made from fresh, premium ingredients.”

Effective immediately, Rosendale’s has closed up all three of their Short North restaurants at 793 North High Street: Rosendales Modern Bistro, Upstairs at Rosendales and Details. A press release issued tonight cited “a significant decline in weekly sales since Chef Rosendale’s departure” as their main reason for closing the businesses.

“We want to thank all of Columbus and the many patrons from across central Ohio for the last several years, and to the outstanding staff for all their hard work and dedication,” said Chef Richard Rosendale.

Rolls Cafe just opened in the Atlas Building near the corner of High & Long Streets a little less than a year ago, but they’re already upgrading to a new Downtown location. A sign on their door indicates that they’re moving two blocks west into a retail space near the corner of Front and Elm Streets, but no target reopening date has been set just yet. The owners stated that they expected the build out of the new space to take a few months. More information can be found at www.RollsCafe.com .

Mozart's in the Bexley gateway closed and in it's place is Moshi Sushi Lounge. Under $10 for a couple rolls and miso soup before tip. I liked it.

Menu: Moshi Sushi                                                                    Thursday,              October 1, 2009 6:00 AM                                              By G.A. Benton

In Moshi Sushi, a painting hangs beside a thin bamboo plant and it depicts ... a thin bamboo plant. I'd call that an instance of overtly legible semiotics. Because at Moshi, you can get pristinely fresh real raw fish preparations, but also many dishes - quite cooked and only marginally Japanese ones - that mimic the sushi form. In that, Moshi fills one of its numerous niches.

First and foremost, Moshi brings sushi and Japanese-edged cuisine into the heart of Bexley - a neighborhood surprisingly long-denied that elegantly spare kind of food. Moshi also provides a safe harbor for folks who like dropping anchor in a stylish sushi restaurant, but are provincially too squeamish to chew on raw fish.

<b>Wolfgang Express closes</b>

Saturday,  October 24, 2009

By Tracy Turner

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The Wolfgang Puck Express restaurant at the Shops on Lane Avenue in Upper Arlington closed yesterday, the prelude to a move. However, a new location hasn't been chosen and a reopening date has not been set, said Corey Ladson, the restaurant's general manager.

The franchise owners want to "upgrade to a larger and more full-service atmosphere," Ladson said.

Interesting article about the toll the recession is taking on fine dining restaurants from the Sunday Dispatch - Fine dining feeling pinch.

We talked about this before, but sometimes the highest priced restaurants are the most vulnerable in an economic downturn.  The recent closings of Rosendale's, Morton's and Handke's seem to bear this out.

There's no doubt that those three restaurants were impacted negatively by the economy, but I can't honestly say that I think all three of them would still be in business if our economic condition were better. There were quite a few other factors in play with those three as well.

Another closing in the Short North - this time, Planet Smoothie.  I'm disappointed.  I just walked out my door to get a smoothie from there and its windows are covered in brown paper.  *sigh* :(

The new Tea place in Westerville is open: blueturtleteaandspice.com/ and I saw today a sign for a new Thai place where the Michael's Pizza, the one that caught fire a while back, used to be on College Ave. Jimmy V's opened after a long delay a couple months ago as well.

The writing has been on the wall for the Buckeye Hall of Fame Cafe ever since they went into receivership back in March, but the future of the site may have been determined last night. City Council approved a 10-year tax break for a developer who is proposing to tear down the restaurant and build a six-story 134-room hotel in its place. The owners of the Hall of Fame have stated that they are looking for a new smaller space to relocate the restaurant to. Anyone have any ideas on where might be a good fit?

World being mended

The insurance companies haven't completed their inspections yet, but Dan Otanicar is ready to get to work cleaning up his Whole World Natural Bakery and Restaurant, which was damaged by a fire in kitchen equipment on Oct. 28.  "Thank God, my baker, Mel (Maryellen Curran), saw it and called 911, and the firefighters were very sensitive and didn't tear much up," Otanicar said.  Damage to the Clintonville fixture for vegetarian and vegan fare is repairable, he said, and those repairs will start soon, with reopening expected around Feb. 1.

I'm at Leveque working on something until like midnight and there's no food in this office nor does there seem to be any nightly food options open in Downtown Columbus. We got White Castle from the Short North!

Is there really nothing fairly cheap available after 6-7?

Sandwiches from Tip Top are cheap.

New diner slated to open on Indianola

Tuesday,  November 24, 2009 - 1:10 PM

By Gary Seman Jr., ThisWeek Staff Writer

Call it the Rube's redux.  The Clintonville eatery, which had a loyal stable of patrons before it closed four years ago, is being recast as the Beechwold Diner, 4408 Indianola Avenue.  It is slated to open in a week or so.  Suzanne Jehn, owner of the Beechwold Barber Shop a few storefronts down, is opening the new diner with a decided respect for the past.  The menu will almost mirror the previous one and some of the old employees plan to return.  A slew of omelets, pork cutlets, corned beef and hash, and steak and eggs will make their return, she said.  The menu will be somewhat revamped to include new entrees.

Prices, she said, are going to increase slightly but everything should cost less than $10.  Tentative hours are 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily.  Breakfast will be served all day.  Rube's closed its doors in September 2005 after 18 years in business.  It left behind a following of customers who wanted inexpensive breakfast fare in a neighborhood setting, said David Audino, Jehn's fiance and a contractor who's completing the interior work.

On Restaurants: Basil Thai blooms in Short North

Tuesday,  December 8, 2009 - 3:06 AM

By Bill Chronister, The Columbus Dispatch

The opening of Basil Thai restaurant in the Short North this past weekend was a moment the Ruanphae family had thought about for years.  But patience is a family virtue, said Rhome Ruanphae.  His mother, Judy Ruanphae, opened the Thai Village restaurant on Division Street in Chicago's Wicker Park district 23 years ago, after coming to the U.S. and working as a nurse for 15 years at a nearby hospital.

Mrs. Ruanphae had long considered opening another restaurant, and she and her husband, Sam, began considering Columbus when Rhome moved here 10 years ago.  This year, the family decided it was time.  They've taken half of a former antiques shop at 1124 N. High Street and renovated the space, aiming for a sense of permanence.  "We liked the sense of a neighborhood connection in the Short North," Rhome Ruanphae said.

<b>Otero’s Food Bar Has Closed Their Doors</b>

By Walker | December 11, 2009

<img src="http://www.columbusunderground.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/oteros1.jpg">

Otero’s Food Bar, located at 50 North High Street, has closed their doors, adding one more restaurant casualty to what we had hoped was a finalized list of 2009 closures. This lunch spot has been in business since 2005 and the cause for closure is not immediately known. Their website is still live, but multiple visual reports confirmed that the space was closed up today, and their phone number has been disconnected.

I remember when Otero's opened up :(  Seemed like it did well when I worked downtown.

So many places have closed in The Short North. I don't think it's the economy. It's just that Bodega runs the place! Especially with $1 Grilled Cheese night. That place is jumping!! I came back home and my hippy landlord was outside; I told him where I went and he was like "You guys went to Grilled Cheese night without me!?" I said d@mn, I didn't know it was that serious.

So many places have closed in The Short North.

Huh? I think Rosendales/Details was the only Short North restaurant to close in 2009.

Meanwhile, Sushi Rock, Level Dining Lounge Bakery Gingham, and Basil Thai all opened in the past year.

To me it would appear that the restaurant openings in the neighborhood are currently outpacing the closings.

Northstar to open restaurant at Easton

Friday,  December 25, 2009 - 3:05 AM

By Bill Chronister, THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Northstar Cafe is expanding into the middle of Easton Town Center, taking over the space once held by Smith & Hawken, the gardening chain closed by Scotts Miracle-Gro last July.  The 5,000-square-foot unit, in the same building as Barnes & Noble bookstore, features a two-story glass rotunda at the eastern end.  Once interior work, designed by Gieseke Rosenthal Architecture + Design, is completed in late summer, the restaurant probably will seat about 175 diners, said Kevin Malhame.  He, wife Katy and brother Darren own Northstars in the Short North and Clintonville and Third & Hollywood on 3rd Avenue in Grandview Heights.

Rick & Krista Lopez are no strangers to Columbus diners. The duo opened Crescendo Pastaria in Shawnee Hills in the mid-nineties, and later opened Trattoria La Tavola, which closed earlier this year after a solid 10-year run. Prior to their own ventures, Rick worked at Tapatio, a memorable spot for many on Columbus Underground.

Last month, the Lopezes announced their plans to return Downtown with Knead, a new made-from-scratch dining experience that aims to be open in February at 505 N. High Street. We recently sat down with Rick and Krista to find out more about what we can expect from their latest restaurant concept.

Has anyone here on UO tried out Yellow Brick yet? (I know Columbusite has.) I've only had it once so far, but it's really tasty pizza. Happy to have this place in my neck of the woods. Only a 12 minute walk from my house here in the King Lincoln District. I imagine I'll be making that walk much more often when it's a little warmer out. ;)
