From the 1/5/10 Dispatch at On Restaurants:

• The Elevator Brewery and Draught Haus, 161 N. High St., is adding 12 more limited-edition micro-brewed beers to its lineup in 2010. Master Brewer Vic Schiltz and Brewer Mark Beery plan to brew a single batch of a new beer every month. The beers will be part of what the brewery calls its Professor of Hearty Drinking, or Ph.D., program. January's selection is Belgian Strong Dark Ale.

• The Lancaster Grill, a Greek restaurant at 512 E. Main St. in Lancaster, reopened Thanksgiving Day after having been closed since May 31 because of lease issues.

• The Pizza Cottage opened its fourth location in central Ohio, at 1000 Old Diley Rd. in Pickerington, on Dec. 31. Pizza Cottage also has restaurants in Buckeye Lake, Newark and Lancaster.

New kings of Little Palace

Tina and Randy Corbin, with other business partners, bought the Little Palace at 240 S. 4th St. on Dec. 28 and plan to reopen it early next month, after making minor renovations. The partners also own Club 185 in German Village and the Rossi Bar and Kitchen in the Short North.

Tina Corbin said the new restaurant will be similar in style to the Rossi and will feature a signature hamburger as well as a full bar. They plan to keep the Little Palace name because the restaurant's vintage neon sign "is too good to pass up," she said.

^This is some very promising news about the Little Palace on Fourth Street being bought by the owners of Club 185 and The Rossi. The previous owner did a pretty snazzy renovation a few years ago with the assistance of a Capitol South facade grant. Unfortunately, the previous owner ran into some health code problems with the restaurant and was recently shut down for a few days. It likely influenced his decision to sell.

The new owners look like they plan to renovate the restaurant operation to match the previously renovated exterior. And Little Palace is right next door to the recently opened Dirty Frank's. Could be another restaurant row in the making?

Here's a photo of the building just after it was renovated. And the new owners are right on the mark about keeping that beautiful neon sign.

Burritos for Bethel Road as Chipotle takes over former Baja Fresh space

Business First of Columbus - by Dan Eaton

Turns out there are places in Columbus where Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. doesn’t run a restaurant. The Denver-based burrito chain plans to open its first Bethel Road restaurant at the Olentangy Plaza by early February, a site most recently home to competitor Baja Fresh Mexican Grill.

Chipotle operates more than 900 restaurants, including 28 in Central Ohio and six in rural areas such as Athens and Chillicothe. A Marion restaurant is scheduled to open in February.

Good news about two of Clintonville's favorite diners from the 1/19/10 On Restaurants column:

Homestyle hangout: Neighborhood vibe back on track at newly opened Beechwold Diner

Tuesday, January 19, 2010 - 3:01 AM

By Denise Trowbridge

FOR THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The Beechwold Diner could give you a case of deja Rube's. The neighborhood breakfast spot opened Jan. 2 in the building that was home to Rube's Diner for 18 years, before it closed in 2005. Some of the staff --- two waitresses and the grill cook -- are Rube's alumni. Even the menu, chock-full of breakfast staples such as pancakes, waffles and homemade biscuits and sausage gravy, is inspired by the now-defunct diner. When Rube's closed, it left a void in the neighborhood, said Beechwold Diner owner Suzanne Jehn.

Neighbors apparently agree. The diner, at 4408 Indianola Ave., had standing room only for nearly five hours on opening day. The Beechwold Diner is open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. Owners plan to offer delivery service within a 5-mile range of the restaurant.

Nancy's redux

Nancy's Home Cooking, which closed in June, is making a comeback. Sheila Davis Hahn took over the restaurant at 3133 N. High St. in Clintonville from former owner Cindy King and is waiting for final approval from city inspectors before opening. She hopes to open by the end of the month.

Michael O’Toole’s Restaurant & Bar Opening Soon

By Walker | January 23, 2010 - 12:30pm

This February, Michael O’Toole’s will become the newest entry into the Downtown bar and restaurant scene. The new venue will be housed in the former Damon’s Grill location at 89 E. Nationwide Blvd. Michael O’Toole’s is a mix between a traditional turn-of-the-century Irish Pub and a more modernized restaurant with an expanded menu.

Walker Evans of Columbus Underground sat down recently with owner Craig Dye to discuss the restaurant concept that he and business partner Jeffrey Tincher will be bringing to the area next month.

There is another empty retail spot (or two?) in that block, but I'd actually like to see something non-restaurant that could compliment the restaurants. Now if only this momentum can help boost Main St a bit.

Closed hot-dog shop will become Westerville Grill

Wednesday, January 27, 2010 - 11:36 AM

By Jennifer Nesbitt, ThisWeek Staff Writer

North Lewisburg chef Rick Stevens plans to open Chef Rick's Westerville Grill at 59 S. State St. where a restaurant with a similar name once operated. The space most recently housed the Dog Joint, a gourmet hot-dog shop that opened in March 2008 and closed a month ago.

Stevens said he envisions his restaurant as a re-creation of the original Westerville Grille. His menu won't be identical to that of the old Westerville Grille, which closed in early 2007, Stevens said, but it will feature similar American comfort food. His goal is to have the restaurant up and running by the middle or end of February. It will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

Hoggy's is back

Business is smokin' at reopened flagship of barbecue chain

Tuesday, February 9, 2010 - 3:05 AM

By Denise Trowbridge

FOR THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Hoggy's is home again. The barbecue chain has reopened a restaurant at the site of its first, at 2234 W. Dublin-Granville Road.

That location in the Linworth area had closed in 2006 in a dispute with the landlord. A pizza place took over the space but soon closed. And that's when Tim Huter, Hoggy's CEO, jumped at the chance to reclaim it. "Emotionally, we wanted to be there," he said. "It was important because it was our original location, and it's what a lot of people think of when they think of Hoggy's. That place was the inspiration for all of our future locations, and it can never be duplicated."

The new old Hoggy's is a little fancier than when the original one opened in 1991. Then, it was just a small barbecue joint housed in a former ice-cream shop sandwiched between a grocery store and a gas station on a commercial stretch of Rt. 161.

Niece, community rally to reopen Clintonville comfort-food eatery Friday

Tuesday, February 16, 2010 - 2:54 AM

By Denise Trowbridge

FOR THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Fans of Nancy's Home Cooking, mark Friday on your calendar. That's when the Clintonville institution will begin dishing up chicken and noodles and other specialties again. Credit Sheila Davis Hahn and her decision to trade her textbooks for cookbooks for spearheading efforts to reopen the neighborhood mainstay.

She decided to put her master's degree in social work on hold and dedicate all her energy to reopening her aunt Cindy King's beloved neighborhood eatery at 3133 N. High Street. "The more I went to see Cindy and saw how heartbroken she was, the more I wanted to do it," Hahn said. "She gave this place 40 years of heart and soul."

Restaurants plan menus for German Village Society's 50th Anniversary Gala

By GARTH BISHOP, COLUMBUS LOCAL NEWS

Published: Wednesday, February 17, 2010 - 6:06 PM EST

It will be a night of music, history, cocktails and some of the most delicious things the neighborhood has to offer. The German Village Society's 50th Anniversary Gala is set for Feb. 27 at the Grange Insurance building, 671 S. High St. It will run from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. in the building's Haaf Hall. Representatives of 11 village restaurants will be bringing the best of their food and drink menus to the event to celebrate the society's golden jubilee.

"Who would have known way back when this (was) kind of a dead-end area of town that ... they (would) put it back together and there would be all these thriving businesses?" said society board member Sarah Irvin Clark, head of the committee organizing the gala.

Participating restaurants include Bakery Gingham, Barcelona Restaurant & Bar, G. Michael's Bistro & Bar, Hey Hey Bar & Grill, Juergen's Bakery and Restaurant, Katzinger's Delicatessen, Kroger at Brewer's Yard, Lindey's, Max & Erma's, Pistacia Vera and Schmidt's Restaurant und Sausage Haus.

Wait a minute: Kroger?

The BDK has a pretty decent selection of prepared food items. Head in there around Noon on a weekday and you'll see plenty of office types sitting at the cafe area eating lunch, sitting at the sushi counter, and occasionally listening to live music too. It's practically a restaurant.

Interesting. Sounds like an upgrade over the local Kroger store that I shop at. Good for the Brewery District and German Village too.

San Francisco Oven Closing and Transforming

San Francisco Oven in the Capital Square Building at 65 E. State Street, has abruptly closed after a 6 1/2 year run, to become another undisclosed restaurant.

DK Diner - 1715 W. Third Ave., Grandview

Reliable diner in Grandview makes superior doughnuts

Wednesday, February 17, 2010 - 10:10 AM

By G.A. Benton, Columbus Alive

There's lots of expensive and snazzy restaurants in Grandview. DK Diner isn't one of them. In fact, everything about DK - but especially its homespun food and low prices - hearkens back to an era before raw tuna was a staple on menus.

The first handy thing to know about the breakfast-and-lunch-only spot is it observes a fetch-your-own-beverage policy. This means you're expected to grab whatever coffee mug you find appealing (no two are alike) to get the joe flowing.

The second thing to know is DK takes everyday ingredients and transforms them into comforting diner fare.

The third - and most important thing to know is that no one, and I mean no one, makes better doughnuts in Columbus.

Starliner Diner - 5240 Cemetery Rd., Hilliard

Eclectic offshoot generous with inspired dishes

Thursday, February 25, 2010 - 2:55 AM

Of all the progeny from the Galaxy Cafe in Powell during the 1990s, the most enduring is Starliner Diner in Hilliard.

While some elements of the eclectic decor have changed over time - a collection of garish clocks adorns one wall of the concrete-block building - it's unfailingly funky, giving the impression of being assembled from secondhand shops and junkyards. More important, it's entertaining.

The menu's mix of Cajun, Cuban, Southwestern, Tex-Mex and American is just as eclectic as the decor. The consistent theme of hearty servings at low prices keeps Starliner busy.

“I’m certainly not going to change the core concept,” said Kathleen. “Pete and Jon knew what they were doing. Our customers are passionate about certain menu items, so instead we’re going to add on to what they’ve already done.”

A little late on this, but Columbus' own Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams was featured on the Food Network show "The Best Thing I Ever Ate" in their episode on Spicy Foods. Jeni's spicy ice cream flavor is Queen City Cayenne.

From Jeni's blog at http://www.saltycaramel.com/:

"In honor of Queen City Cayenne's TV debut, here's a little back story ... Queen City Cayenne was actually the first flavor I ever made, before I went into business. I made my first ice cream by adding cayenne essential oil to a store bought chocolate ice cream. When I served it at a party, people went crazy - it’s cold! It’s HOT!"

"Originally, I called this ice cream Mexican Hot Chocolate...but one day it occurred to me that Cincinnati chili - famously made with a hint of chocolate, cinnamon, and cayenne - was a closer-to-home reference. My Queen City Cayenne ice cream, made of the same ingredients, is a nod to our neighbor to the south (and one of our favorite cities) ... The Queen City, Cincinnati."

Restaurateur relocates turkey-themed eatery to Brewery District

Wednesday, March 24, 2010 - 1:47 PM

By GARY SEMAN JR., ThisWeek Staff Writer

Lots of restaurants like to serve chicken. Aaron Clark prefers turkey. "I think turkey is the new meat that's taking over," said Clark, who has relocated his restaurant, Gobblers, to the German Village area. "You can do anything with it." Specifically, he injects each bird with a homemade brine and lets it marinate overnight. It then is prepared in one of three ways: deep-fried in peanut oil, smoked or slow roasted.

Gobblers is expected to open this week at 518 S. High St. in a former Quizno's location in the Brewery District. Clark said he likes the footprint, smaller than his former store on North James Road, which has since closed. And he likes the bustling pedestrian traffic in the shadow of downtown.

Wing joint closing after 15 years on High

Wednesday, March 31, 2010 - 2:56 PM

By GARY SEMAN JR., ThisWeek Staff Writer

Buffalo Wild Wings in the Brewery District will serve up its last drummie at close of business Saturday. The Minneapolis-based organization announced it is shutting down the 15-year-old location at 515 S. High Street. The store, which opened in June 1995, was originally a franchise location. Corporate officials bought the store in 2001. The 5,400-square-foot eatery seats 200.

Buffalo Wild Wings got its start in 1981 in Columbus as BW-3 at the corner of Woodruff and High streets across from the Ohio State University campus. The original store closed in 2006 to make way for a new two-story, state-of-the-art location at the corner of Lane Avenue and High Street. When the Brewery District location closes, there will be 13 stores in Greater Columbus, with another eight in outlying communities.

Local retail expert Chris Boring of Boulevard Strategies said the Brewery District is still a viable area but other recently built destinations, such as South Campus Gateway and the Arena District, have drawn a lot of attention away from the community. "It has more amenities for its residents and workers than it had before but I think it has less of an outside tourist appeal," he said.

The Culinary Table owner plans to move business to New Albany

Wednesday, March 31, 2010 - 2:59 PM

By GAIL MARTINEAU, ThisWeek Staff Writer

In the 1830s, New Albany founder Noble Landon opened the Landon's Corners tavern at the corner of High and Main streets. More than 180 years later, Landon's Corners is opening just down the street from its original location with new owners and a 21th-century philosophy.

Eric Johnson, the general manager of the new restaurant, plans to open the restaurant, bar and banquet facility at 29 S. High St. in the old Gibby's New Albany Grill location later this month. The restaurant, which will be able to seat about 145 people, will feature a game room, bar, televisions and a family-friendly atmosphere.

In addition to the restaurant, Johnson and his wife will relocate much of their catering business, The Culinary Table, from Grandview to the New Albany location.

IHOP getting closer to Columbus with 3rd area restaurant this fall

Business First of Columbus - by Dan Eaton

A restaurant chain with a name not seen much in Central Ohio will get closer to Columbus. A franchisee is seeking to develop an International House of Pancakes restaurant at 2413 Taylor Square Road in Reynoldsburg, between an Olive Garden and Panera dining spots.

Reynoldsburg Development Director Lucas Haire said a deal for the site, in the shadow of the Taylor Square shopping complex, isn’t expected to close until May, but a site plan has been OK’d by the city with design review up next. City action on building plans would follow.

Franchisee Womack Restaurants Inc. of Terre Haute, Indiana has been circling Columbus for a few years. Its first IHOP in the region opened in Chillicothe in 2008 and another opened last fall in Lancaster. The Reynoldsburg store would be the 12th for Womack, a 22-year franchisee that runs nine IHOPs in Indiana. IHOP is a subsidiary of DineEquity Inc., also the franchisor of Applebee’s. It has 29 IHOPs in Ohio, mostly in the Cincinnati, Cleveland and Toledo areas.

FOR THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Trash bins full of table scraps, cardboard, cans and bottles have always been a byproduct of the restaurant business. It doesn't have to be, says Elizabeth Lessner, president of Betty's Family of Restaurants.

By the end of this year, she hopes her business - which runs Betty's Fine Food & Spirits, the Surly Girl Saloon, Tip Top Kitchen & Cocktails and Dirty Frank's Hot Dogs - will become central Ohio's first zero-waste restaurant group.

Lessner and her employees are attempting to significantly reduce the amount of waste they produce, then find a way to recycle, reuse or compost everything that is left. The goal is to prove that green, eco-friendly initiatives and waste-reduction programs are possible and economical.

Two months ago, a new Short North eatery quietly opened their doors at 1030 North High Street, and if you’re not paying close attention, you may have already walked right by it without realizing it’s there.

“Bagels by Captain Cream Cheese” operates during the daytime out of the same side-of-the-building shack where Mikey’s Late Night Slice serves up pizza after hours.

We recently caught up with Zach Henkel, the entrepreneur behind this new business, to find out more.
