Cameron Mitchell adding Pearl oyster bar in Short North

DAI-Cameron-Mitchell-Pearl-1.jpg?v=1

Cameron Mitchell Restaurants LLC will open its first new brand in five years this fall.

The Columbus-based restaurant company’s newest nameplate is the Pearl Restaurant, Tavern & Oyster Room and will fill the former home of the Burgundy Room at 641 N. High Street in the Short North.  This is Mitchell’s first new restaurant brand since he rolled out Marcella’s, coincidentally right across the parking lot from the Pearl, in 2007.

As the restaurant descriptor reveals, it will be a tavern and raw bar with a menu of local and organic comfort food inspired by “the country’s best cafes, corner taverns, neighborhood bistros, seaside shacks and roadside joints.”  The menu will have fresh oysters and big plates, plus house-made charcuterie and made-from-scratch pies.

Some changes to one of the Dispatch's Top 10 restaurants.  The Executive Chef at Barcelona is leaving to start a new restaurant with his wife in the downtown area.  The new restaurant - Natalie’s, located at 79 S. Fourth Street - is serving Korean and American dishes in a casual setting.

ThisWeek News: Natalie’s a casual spot for classic American, Korean fare

From Walker Evans at Columbus Underground:  "Update: I just spoke with owner Paul Yow, who said that they are changing the name from Natalie's to Hae-Paul's effective immediately.  The signage will be changing over the next week, along with menus and website."

Any change to a German Village-area watering hole that has been open since the 1920's constitutes a big change.  Such as getting their first new chef in 30 years and adding a Yak Burger to the Hey Hey menu.  More about it at the This Week News link below:

Till Dynamic Fare Launching Jewish Deli and Weekend Pop-Up Donut Shop

By: Walker Evans, Columbus Underground

Published on January 17, 2013 - 9:15 am

It’s been exactly one year since the opening of Till Dynamic Fare and owners Magdiale Wolmark and Cristin Austin are celebrating in a big way.  The duo will be launching a second dining space next door that they describe as being two concepts in one.

The new venue is called “Izzy and mo”, which will operate as an authentic Jewish deli Sunday through Friday for breakfast and lunch, and will switch over to operating as an artisan pop-up donut shop from Friday evening through late Saturday night. ... Izzy and mo is scheduled to open in early spring at 249 King Avenue.  For more information about Till Dynamic Fare, visit www.tillfare.com.

Ohio Nachos

Instead of using tortilla chips, Ohioans festoon potato chips with cheese and other toppings for a deliriously good riff on nachos. Our favorite version comes from Cap City Diner in Columbus, which features thick-cut kettle chips drizzled with a garlicky alfredo sauce, topped with Maytag blue cheese and chives, and heated until gooey. Pungent, salty, creamy, and crisp, they're our latest guilty pleasure.

Izzy & mo Jewish deli/doughnut shop set for spring debut

DAI-Izzy-&-Mo-Till*280.jpg?v=1

Bless the owners of Till for not settling on one new eatery idea. When Magdiale Wolmark and Cristin Austin converted the former Dragonfly Neo-V to Till last January, they promised the small space next to their restaurant at 247 King Ave. in Columbus would become an artisanal doughnut shop.

They’re following through on that plan now, but with a meaty twist. It’ll also be an old-school Jewish deli.

SuperChef’s here to save breakfast (and lunch) downtown

superchefs-exterior*600.jpg

If you see the name SuperChef and think that’s too bold a claim, just know they sell red velvet pancakes and Baked Alaska pancakes and candied bacon.

If that isn’t super, then we must reconsider the term.

SuperChef’s Breakfast & More is open at 199 E. Broad St. downtown, between the Columbus Club and the Ohio Education Association building. It's the third restaurant under that name from childhood friends Ryan Bryson and Darnell Ferguson, and the first in their native Columbus. Bryson runs the local SuperChef’s while Ferguson runs the original two in Louisville, Ky.

Handke’s space in Brewery District becoming Jack Whitney’s bar and grill

A historic Columbus restaurant space is getting new life. Two lives actually.

The old Handke’s Cuisine at 520 S. Front St. is now in the hands of Kevin Ames, who plans to open a pair of new ventures in the Brewery District. The main floor will be Jack Whitney's, a bar-and-grill style restaurant seating 90 around a refurbished bar.

“We think there’s a demand for that kind of lunch and dinner space,” Ames said.

FIRST LOOK: Melt Bar & Grilled to bring cheesy sandwiches, craft brews to Short North on Friday

I know this sounds cheesy, but I’ve burned through all my cheese cliches/wordplay (big cheese, the cheese stands alone) so I’ll just get to the (sharp cheddar) point – Melt Bar & Grilled opens Friday.

The buzzed-about Short North restaurant, 840 N. High St., is expected to be both a popular addition to the Columbus dining scene and a good expansion for the Cleveland-based chain.

“We hope it’s going to be our busiest,” owner Matt Fish told me.

Columbus Underground, the Dispatch and Business First had articles about a reimagined Chintz Room restaurant coming to the renovated Lazarus Building.  The original Chintz Room was a high-style restaurant located in the fifth floor of the Lazarus downtown department store.  It was open for decades until its closure in 1998.

The new Chintz Room restaurant will be operated by Elizabeth Lessner’s Columbus Food League and will fill out the remaining ground floor retail space that faces High Street.  The new restaurant space takes up roughly 4,000 square feet with a dining room of 2,500 square feet, making this one of the largest Columbus Food League restaurants to date.

The historic Lazarus Building is also home to Cup O Joe, the OSU Urban Arts Space, the Center for Architecture and Design, and office tenants including the Columbus Chamber, Franklin County Economic Development Department, the Ohio Department of Insurance and many others.  The new restaurant was approved last week by the Columbus Downtown Development Corporation, which owns and operates the Lazarus Building.

Elizabeth Lessner's debut restaurant in Columbus - Betty’s Fine Food and Spirits - is moving from its Short North location to Gay Street in Downtown.  Betty's will be closing its Short North location at the end of January after operating there since 2001.  The new location at 340 E. Gay Street is a suburban-style holdover property in this rapidly transforming part of downtown.

The single-story building they will be occupying is roughly the same square footage as the Short North Betty's, but with a different shape that will allow for some upgrades.  One of those upgrades is a conversion of the surface parking lot in front of the building into an outdoor dining patio.  That outdoor patio will be connected to the interior with glazed garage doors that will open up during warm weather. -- Below is a photo of the existing building at 340 E. Gay Street -- a Google Map for the area is at http://goo.gl/maps/rM7Eg:

This new Betty's location will be in between the growing Neighborhood Launch residential neighborhood being developed by the Edwards Companies to the west and the evolving Columbus College of Art & Design campus to the east.  This location at the northwest corner of Gay & Grant is opposite the southeast corner of Gay & Grant, where the 7-story Abigail Apartment Building was recently built, and one block north of Broad & Grant, where the historic Seneca Hotel was recently renovated into the Seneca Apartments.

This location is also within an emerging retail block in this area.  It is immediately south of the newly opened Hills Market and another Lessner/Columbus Food League owned restaurant, the Grass Skirt Tiki Room.  A second Café Brioso location announced it would be locating within this block - previously posted here in the Neighborhood Launch thread - to be located next to the historic church being renovated by Edwards and the first of two five-story apartment buildings being built on E. Long Street.

Below are two local media reports about Betty's moving from the Short North into Downtown:

More news about the building at 340 E. Gay Street (northwest corner of Gay & Grant) that a week ago Betty's announced it was moving into from its Short North location.  The building will also be getting a new format Domino's pizza store in a half of the interior.  More about this from the Dispatch below:

Domino’s to provide ‘pizza theater’ at new Downtown store

By Mary Vanac, The Columbus Dispatch

Wednesday, January 8, 2014 - 1:44 AM

Get used to watching your Domino’s pizza being made.  The chain is rolling out its “pizza theater” format stores, and a local Domino’s Pizza franchisee plans to open his chain’s second such restaurant in the Columbus area by the end of June.

Glen Stroud, who owns a dozen Domino’s locations in and around Columbus, chose the building on the northwest corner of E. Gay Street and N. Grant Avenue for his new-concept restaurant because of its proximity to Downtown. ... The Domino’s franchisee also picked the spot because it offers parking for his company’s new Smart cars, which will be used to deliver pizzas in an area from German Village to the Arena District, starting this summer.

Stroud’s latest restaurant will go into the building next to the Hills Market Downtown, which opened early last year, and just west of the Columbus College of Art & Design. ... A week ago, Columbus restaurant entrepreneur Elizabeth Lessner said she will move her Betty’s Fine Food & Spirits from its Short North site to the other half of the building that Domino’s will occupy, probably this summer.

Domino’s new format offers in-store seating, an open kitchen so customers can watch the pizza-making process. ... Expect to see the new format chainwide. ... The first new-concept Domino’s in the Columbus area opened in Powell in December.

Pizza Rustica to Open Second Location Downtown

By: Ayana Wilson, Columbus Underground

Published on January 8, 2014 - 10:35 am

In 2010, Columbus was introduced to Roman-style pan pizza: rectangular in shape, and topped with gourmet ingredients.  Pizza Rustica opened at 1558 North High Street in the South Campus Gateway, and since then, eager pie lovers have been lining up for their inspired combinations.

In about one month’s time, Pizza Rustica will open its second location in Columbus, this time at 17 South High Street Downtown, at the former site of Caffé Daniela.  Not much will change from the original campus concept, which means customers will be able to come in for a slice, a sandwich or a salad when hunger strikes.

Columbus Underground reports on some restaurant comings and goings in the Brewery District:

The Brewery District Restaurant Shuffle

By: Walker Evans, Columbus Underground

Published on January 8, 2014 - 12:00 pm

Brewery District Restaurateurs Kevin and Lori Ames opened Frezno at 460 South Front Street in May, opened Jack Whitney’s at 520 South Front Street in November, closed Frezno in December, and announced on Facebook yesterday that Jack Whitney’s would also be closing effective immediately.

“For reasons that are still unclear to us, the landlord at 520 South Front Street has asked us to cease operations immediately,” said the Ames’ in a statement released today. “While it was not our decision to close the thriving restaurant, we have regrouped and come up with a plan that we are very excited about.”  The couple is planning to relocate Jack Whitney’s over to the old Frezno space, where it will be reborn under a new name: The Front Street Bar and Grill.

(. . .)

Meanwhile, the White Rabbit restaurant that was to be located next door at 456 South Front Street is presumed a dead project after months with no updates and the closure the Commonwealth Sandwich Bar from the same owners.

Lessners buy Tip Top building on Gay Street

Liz Lessner and her brother Tim Lessner of the Columbus Food League have bought the 73 E. Gay St. property where they have operated the Tip Top Kitchen & Cocktails since May 2007.

(. . .)

Liz Lessner said in a voice mail that her lease with a Schottenstein Property Group affiliate allowed for a purchase of the property. “The good news is now that we own the building, we can put some money into leasehold improvements,” she said, such as renovations to the restaurant’s facade.

The Clubhouse Sports Grill & Bar Now Open

By: Ayana Wilson, Columbus Underground

Published on January 25, 2014 - 10:30 am

It’s easy to see why any entrepreneur would want to open a business at 340 Greenlawn Avenue. It’s across the street from Berliner Park, one of the largest ballpark facilities in the city, adjacent to four major communities – Downtown, Merion Village, Brewery District, and German Village – and easy to access from the highway.

In fact, so popular is the address that in recent memory it’s been home to Allure’s Cocktail Lounge, Field House Tavern, Banana Bean Café, Tavern on the Lawn, and Coyote Jane’s.  None of these places were under the management of Corbin Wrights and Ryan Stroup though, a couple of guys who believe they’ve found the right combination of atmosphere and offering.

Wrights and Stroup have been working for The CSG Group family of bars (Park Street Cantina and Complex, The Social, The Saloon) for the past 15 years, and now they’re ready to branch out on their own.  The Clubhouse Sports Grill & Bar opened on January 10th, a food-first venture the guys hope will turn things around at the cursed location.

Is it true that the current Panera is the largest Panera in the world? Somebody hinted at that on CU. I could swear that the one at Morse and Hamilton is bigger.

I hadn't heard that.  But at only 4,800 square feet, it would be hard to believe this is "the largest Panera in the world"!

The new one is going to be 1,000 square feet smaller.

I hadn't heard that.  But at only 4,800 square feet, it would be hard to believe this is "the largest Panera in the world"!

Since restaurateur Liz Lessner's collection of Columbus restaurants has been in the news lately with a series of openings and relocations, Business First decided to post a 36-image photo essay of those restaurants at http://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/blog/2014/02/photo-essay-inside-liz-lessners.html

Liz Lessner and her brother Tim Lessner co-founded and co-own the Columbus Food League - whose holdings include Betty’s Fine Food & Spirits, Dirty Frank’s Hot Dog Palace, Dirty Frank’s West, The Jury Room, Surly Girl Saloon, The Torpedo Room, The Grass Skirt Tiki Room and Tip Top Kitchen & Cocktails.

Liz Lessner isn't the only female restaurateur accumulating locations in downtown Columbus.  Yavonne Sarber opened de-NOVO Bistro & Bar in the 200 block of S. High Street across from Columbus Commons park about three years ago.  Since then she Manifesto Tuscan Grato & Scotch Bar and Chez du Bon one block north in the Fifth Third Building.  Now, she is set to open a fourth downtown restaurant - this time north of Capitol Square.  Columbus Underground has more about this at the link below:
