Food Network's "Restaurant: Impossible" swooped in on the restaurant that opened a few years ago in the renovated Wonder Bread bakery building in Italian Village.  The Dispatch wrote a profile about it (excerpt linked below).  The Restaurant Impossible makeover occurred last weekend during the Arnold Sports Festival weekend.  A number of people over at CU and reddit wondered if that was coincidence or planned, because the show host looks like a bodybuilder:

Food Network show, 'Restaurant: Impossible' turns Cray into Factory on Fourth

By JD Malone, The Columbus Dispatch

Saturday, March 12, 2016 - 6:13 AM

When Crystal Park watched episodes of "Restaurant: Impossible," the popular Food Network show, she promised herself that if she ever wound up on the show, she would not cry.  Last week the show’s star, Robert Irvine, surprised Park at Cray, her restaurant in the old Wonder Bread factory on N. Fourth Street.

What followed was two days of filming, remodeling, renaming the place, rewriting the menu and a lot of, yes, crying.  “That first day, he made me cry a lot,” said Park, whose restaurant is now called Factory on Fourth. “I cried like six times.”

Irvine’s show revolves around the idea that he can swoop in for a few days, diagnose a restaurant’s issues and put it back on path to success.  Irvine, a former cook in the British Royal Navy, doesn’t pull punches when explaining a restaurant’s problems. ... Park's episode, the first shot here in Columbus, airs April 27.  Park plans to throw a watch party at the restaurant.

New BBQ Concept Landing in Old Ray Johnson’s Seafood Market Space

By Rebecca Wagner, Columbus Underground

March 23, 2016 - 6:00 am

The team behind The Walrus, Olde Towne Tavern, and Corner Stone Craft Beer & Wine have plans to open a new Downtown barbecue joint.

The new restaurant — name to be determined – will consist of a full service barbecue sit-down interior, drive-through, and outdoor walk-up counter.  The space is located directly west of The Walrus, at 113 E. Main Street, in the former site of Ray Johnson’s Seafood Market.  The front parking lot will be remodeled into a large Main Street-facing patio.

Jeff Ruby Opening Steakhouse in Downtown Columbus

By Walker Evans, Columbus Underground

May 5, 2016 - 6:49 pm

Cincinnati-based steakhouse restaurateur Jeff Ruby is officially making his way to Columbus.  The restaurant owner announced today his plans to open one of his signature restaurants at 89 E. Nationwide Boulevard in the space currently home to 89 Fish & Grill.

The news comes as little surprise, as Ruby’s not-so-subtle tour bus was spotted in several prominent locales in Columbus last year, and his staff confirmed to Columbus Underground at that time that he was exploring opportunities in the city.  ...  The Columbus location on Nationwide Boulevard is positioned directly across from the Convention Center, and within close proximity to thousands of hotel rooms.  Two more hotels are proposed nearby — a 12-story Canopy by Hilton next door and an 8-story AC Hotel just a few blocks away.

^ I love it when bad news turns into good news.  CU is reporting that The Angry Baker is set to open a second location in the former Till/Dragonfly space at 247 King Avenue.  It was unclear if this included the adjacent Izzy & Mo's space at 249 King Avenue - but the report did seem to indicate that both spaces were being occupied.  The Angry Baker’s original bakery and cafe location opened in 2011 at 891 Oak Street in Olde Towne East:

Sisters Bring New Orleans Sno-Balls to Columbus

The first day of summer was on Monday, and we’re already off to a hot start this season. Temperatures have been pushing up into the nineties and the humidity has made it feel even hotter. Thankfully, there’s a new way to cool down thanks to two sisters who have launched a “Sno-Ball” stand that brings the New Orleans treat to Columbus.

“We used to live in New Orleans and missed having access to Nola sno-balls in the summer heat,” explained business co-owner Kayla Malone. “We got the idea to open a Sno-ball stand during a long road trip where we didn’t have phone service for four hours. By the time we had service again, we had our name, logo, and were building the menu.”

The Columbus-based fast-casual chain will be moving into 5037 N. High St. in the Graceland Shopping Center, replacing an Applebee’s.

Clintonville buffet becoming Asian fusion bistro

The Sakura Buffet tried to stand out from the competition, but maybe it stood out a bit too far.

Owner Justin Ye opened his first Asian buffet at 139 Graceland Blvd. in Clintonville last fall serving up sushi in addition to an assortment of Southeast Asian cuisine.

Brassica to Open Upper Arlington Location on Lane Avenue

Wildly popular fast-casual Mediterranean restaurant Brassica is planning to open second location, expanding the concept’s footprint from the Short North to Upper Arlington. Representatives from the local company — which also operates Northstar Café — submitted documents to the Upper Arlington Board of Zoning and Planning for the construction of an addition to an existing building at 1442 West Lane Avenue, which would house the new restaurant as well as the company’s offices.

The new Brassica will take up 2,600 square feet of the new building, which is quite a bit larger than the 1,600 square foot original in The Short North. The new location will also feature a patio facing Lane Avenue.

Wolf’s Ridge Brewing has officially rolled out its new taproom kitchen.

The restaurant and craft brewery opened its 215 North Fourth Street location back in 2013, adding the sizable taproom space in 2015.  Father-and-son founders Alan and Bob Szuter have recently installed a 375-square foot taproom kitchen, which opened to the public last week.

After several months of prepping and planning, the new Buns & Brews restaurant has officially opened at 1205 North High Street, on the north end of the Short North. The new restaurant and bar features the popular combination of gourmet hot dogs and craft beer — the latter of which is still coming soon.

“Last Monday was our soft opening, but once we get our liquor license, we’ll host a grand opening,” said owner William Hightower who added that it should be arriving within the next month. “Once that’s in place, craft beer will be our focus, and we’ll have a drink menu that pairs local craft beers with the hot dogs.”
