Cucinova is opening its second Central Ohio shop and has another in the works.

The fast-casual pizza brand, owned by Columbus-based Sbarro LLC, will open its Westerville restaurant at 79 S. State St. Saturday. That follows the 7721 Sawmill Road site in Dublin opened earlier this year.

The Refectory is a fine-dining restaurant that has been a consistent presence in Columbus Top 10 Restaurant lists for some time.  The restaurant is celebrating its 40th year in the 1840's-era church along Bethel Road in Columbus.  CU sat down with longtime Refectory Owner and CEO Kamal Boulos for a look into the history and future of The Refectory and its role in the Columbus dining scene:

CU: The Refectory Celebrates 40th Anniversary

Another story about a longtime Columbus restaurant name (this one at the casual end of the dining spectrum).  This one is changing ownership after 32 years:

Katzinger's bought by Columbus restaurant group with expansion in mind

By Dan Eaton, Staff reporter - Columbus Business First

July 12, 2016, 10:39am EDT

A landmark Columbus dining destination has a new owner, and may be looking ahead to new markets.  Katzinger’s Delicatessen, a German Village staple for decades at 475 S. Third St., and its sister shop in the North Market have been acquired by CityBrands, a locally based restaurant group that includes the Wine Bistro and Las Margaritas chains.

“It’s such an iconic brand name in Columbus,” Tim Rollins, president of CityBrands, told me. “It’s an authentic deli experience. There’s tremendous customer loyalty and a strong team in place. It’s a comfortable fit for what we do.”

Diane Warren, who co-founded Katzinger's 32 years ago, will continue to advise the business as the ownership transitions over the next year.  Managers have agreed to stay on as well.

Follow-up story from Business First about the Katzinger's sale with more quotes from the Katzinger's founder/owner on why she sold the iconic German Village deli:

Katzinger's founder: 'No doubt in my mind' the deli will improve under new owners

By Dan Eaton, Staff reporter - Columbus Business First

July 12, 2016, 2:51pm EDT

Diane Warren is confident that selling her Katzinger’s Delicatessen is the right move for her, and for the business.  Warren sold the long-time German Village staple, and its sister shop in the North Market, to Columbus-based restaurant group CityBrands, which runs the Wine Bistro and Las Margaritas chains.

"Four years ago, I wake and I’m 65 years old and I go, ‘Whoa man, I cannot do this forever,'" Warren told me Tuesday.  "I feel really good about it. I feel like I’ve done the best I could do to protect the legacy of the deli, to protect my staff and to protect my own future. I followed a plan and now I’m there."

An experienced franchisee hopes to have the first Mod Pizza in Central Ohio open by October in Gahanna.

I wrote about the Bellevue, Washington-based fast-casual pizza chain last week and its plans to develop three eateries around Central Ohio. I've since was able to speak with franchisee Scott Womack, a man with decades of experience in the restaurant industry, including 25 years with the IHOP brand. He since has sold those holdings, but still is a franchisee for Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen Inc. (NASDAQ:PLKI), which has almost 20 restaurants in Indiana, Kansas City and Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Bar and Restaurant Planned for Long-Empty Buildings in Italian Village

restaurant-02.jpg

A local contractor is moving forward with a bar and restaurant concept at a prominent corner in Italian Village. The first phase of the project involves the renovation of a 3,000 square foot garage at 200 East Fourth Ave. Once that building is complete, the plan is to expand the concept into the larger building next door, which fronts North Fourth Street.

“The buildings need a complete overhaul, they are essentially abandoned,” said Andrew Losinske, who lived down the street from the site for 15 years and is now eager to start work on the buildings after an approval process that stretched to nearly 16 months.

Alana’s Food and Wine is For Sale, Owners Relocating

After 18 years in business, Alana’s Food and Wine has begun the process of concluding its final chapter.  Owners Alana Shock and Kevin Bertschi have listed the restaurant for sale with plans to relocate.  The news may come as a surprise to fans who learned earlier this year that the restaurant was staying put after evaluating plans to relocate the business in 2015.

“You know, I’ve been standing in a kitchen for 32 years and I’m ready to do something else,” confirmed Shock on the phone with Columbus Underground today.  “We just started our 18th year there. There’s nothing broke about the restaurant — Kevin and I are just ready to do something else.”  Shock stated that Bertschi has already signed the lease on a wine shop in Sandusky, and the couple have plans to relocate there once the restaurant sells.

"You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

Thought this was a Pokemon themed restaurant for about half a second.

“To an Ohio resident - wherever he lives - some other part of his state seems unreal.”

I suppose it simply means smaller portions.

New Albany bistro replacing white-tablecloth eatery

There’s a new restaurant in New Albany – sort of. Jason Baehr, his wife Anna and his parents Tom and Kathleen Perrine acquired Rosa & Rocco’s Italian Kitchen, 5525 New Albany Road West, a year ago. Rather than closing, renovating and re-branding, they opted for a different approach by gradually changing the interior and menu while never needing to close shop, even for a day.

A new take on Indian cuisine is coming soon to Columbus. Curry Up, conceived and nearly executed by Vishal Patel, intends to suspend negative stereotypes that currently surround Indian restaurants. And for the American public still weary about Indian food, he hopes to offer a more approachable outlet.

“Everyone has that statement about Indian restaurants, where you walk in and things are going to be guaranteed,” Patel said. “‘Food is gonna be really spicy; you’re gonna get bad customer service; the place isn’t going to be as clean.’ Just those negative stereotypes that kind of go along with it, and we want to change that.”

I'm not quite sure, after reading the article, how this will be any different from any other Indian restaurant, but I am happy to see napkins will be available if needed. Good luck to them.
