Roux the day: Cajun eatery in Short North closing, changing to something new

Da Levee in the Short North is closing, but its owner isn’t going anywhere.

Justin Boehme will close his Cajun and Creole restaurant and bar at 765 N. High St. on April 1 after eight years. He is going to renovate the space and reopen with a new idea and a new name.

"I'd been planning this for quite some time. I just was unable to hit the send button on the message to tell people," Boehme told me Tuesday.

Harvest Pizzeria is Coming to Bexley & Grandview

Harvest Pizzeria is expanding further into Central Ohio, and with two locations opening in the next three months, the German Village-born restaurant will soon have six stores in the state. Bexley is the next destination for Harvest, opening in May, followed by a Grandview debut in early June.

In Bexley, Harvest will take over the former Zoe Cafe, which sits at 2376 E. Main St. Zoe served its last meal on Sunday. It opened its doors three years ago under Tasi Rigsby, who also runs Tasi Cafe in the Short North. Rigsby was not available for comment.

Grow Restaurants, the Columbus-based restaurant group that owns Harvest Pizzeria, Cosecha, Curio, and The Sycamore, have been looking at Bexley for several years, says co-founder and CEO Chris Crader. The timing and the location is now right to enter the neighborhood.

A growing craft brew and burger bar is turning its attention to Worthington.

Half Pint Bar & Restaurant plans to take the space at 671 High St. for its fourth Central Ohio restaurant and sixth overall. The project has signs that will go before the Worthington Architectural Review Board on Thursday evening.

“We look for areas where we see a need for craft beer and we think Worthington fits that demo,” Director of Operations Shelly Post told me today. “The community has a bit of the same feel we have up in uptown Marysville.”

Do Shake Shack's expansion plans include Columbus?

Is one of the country’s most sought-after burger joints coming to Columbus?

New York-based Shake Shack Inc. said it has “no news to confirm” regarding a Central Ohio restaurant, but the Dublin-based design firm that works with the chain has teased that the fast casual burger eatery’s arrival may be in the works.

WD Partners Inc., in a March posting to its Facebook page, said Shake Shack would be coming to Columbus in the fall. No specifics about location were shared and the post has been taken down. The company has not returned emails or calls seeking comment.

A representative of Polaris Fashion Place said that area isn’t the landing spot, while a spokeswoman for Easton Town Center could not confirm whether Easton was getting the restaurant. The Short North, with its assorted new projects, also could be a potential market.

Sweet Carrot Opening Third Location on Sawmill

Sweet Carrot’s third location is coming to Dublin. Entering a former Pei Wei on Sawmill Road, the restaurant is set for an October opening.

Sweet Carrot first opened in Grandview in 2015 under local entrepreneur Angela Petro, who also owns Two Caterers. The restaurant’s second location, which sits at 2050 Polaris Parkway, opened earlier this year in February. Sweet Carrot’s third spot, at 7571 Sawmill Rd., was a natural next pick for Petro, who said they’d been looking to expand in the “Worthington-Dublin-Polaris northern corridor” since conceptualizing their second Sweet Carrot.

16-Bit Bar+Arcade Opening Bridge Park Location in Dublin

Columbus-based Rise Brands announced this afternoon plans to open a sixth 16-Bit Bar+Arcade location, and second in Central Ohio, with the addition of a Bridge Park location in Dublin. The move follows closely in the footsteps of the Bridge Park opening of PINS Mechanical Co. — the pinball and duckpin bowling entertainment concept also developed by Rise Brands.

“Dublin has been exceptionally welcoming to our Pins Mechanical Co concept, opening a 16-Bit next to Pins will provide a full entertainment experience in Bridge Park” stated Rise Brands owner Troy Allen. “Bridge Park has delivered on all our expectations, the energy throughout the development has been amazing. So much so, that we’ll be thrilled to unveil our new QSR (Quick Serve Restaurant) concept later in 2018 right between our Pins and 16-Bit locations in Bridge Park.”

Date set for newest Cameron Mitchell restaurant opening

A busy May for Cameron Mitchell Restaurants LLC begins with a new opening.

The Columbus-based restaurant company will open The Avenue Steak Tavern on May 3. The 5,180-square-foot restaurant is in Bridge Park West in Historic Dublin.

It’s the second The Avenue for the company, which opened its first restaurant under that moniker in Grandview Heights in 2016. The restaurant decor has an “old school atmosphere” inspired by the 1920s and 1930s, and the menu offers steaks, seafood and other tavern fare.

Alchemy Cafe Serves Up Hot Brunch and Dinner in Grandview

Alchemy, the health-centric café that’s called Parsons Avenue home for that last three and a half years, will open its second location in Grandview this weekend. The new spot is a deviation from what Alchemy fans might be used to, offering a full brunch menu as well as hot dinner items along with their classic fare.

The new 1,600 square foot space has a “Nordic-inspired” design co-conceptualized by Tim Lai Architect and features artwork from local artist Matt Massara. It’s big enough for Alchemy to have a full kitchen, run by Chef Tyler Minnis of The Market Italian Village. He’s created a plant-centric menu that’s meant to “give our culinary team an opportunity to push boundaries further,” said Abed Alshahal, a partner of A&R Creative Group, which owns Alchemy. “We wanted a place to showcase the future of plant-forward cuisine with the proper tools and kitchen to execute.”

Budd Dairy Food Hall update: 74 applicants so far for 7 spots & breakfast a must, Cameron Mitchell Restaurants says

header-renderings-budddairy.jpg

The Budd Dairy Food Hall isn’t as much about making money as it is making a career (or two or three or seven).

Columbus-based Cameron Mitchell Restaurants LLC announced the project in January and it’s on pace to open later this year or in early 2019.

It is taking 14,000 square feet spread across two floors, plus a rooftop deck in the historic Italian Village building. While the Mitchell team will run the space’s large central bar, the food will come from seven small kitchens ranging from 170 square feet to 360 square feet with operators who will be licensing space in the project. There is an eighth stall, but the company isn’t ready to announce its plans for it yet.

Short North’s Branch Rebranded into Third Westies Location

Short North’s Branch, formerly known as Biscuit & Branch, has undergone another rebrand, this time as Westies Gastropub (under the same owners). The locally-based restaurant has two other locations in the area, in Clintonville and the Brewery District, and will open in the Short North on Friday, May 4.

Westies first opened in the Brewery District in 2014. Since then, says a press release, owner Tony Selimi has been looking to expand the brand, which finally happened in March with Westies’ Clintonville opening. With an “overwhelming response from the public and the success of both locations,” Branch is gone, and Westies now has expanded further into a third location at 685 N. High St.

http://www.dispatch.com/business/20180507/thats-end-blue-danube-to-close-its-doors-on-fathers-day

The Blue Danube, a University-area hangout since 1940, will go dark June 17 as the landlord embarks on a major renovation of the building.  According to the media reports, the property owner, Margetis Investments, plans to take at least two months to renovate the space at 2349 N. High Street and replace it with something similar.

This would be the first time in 78 years that 'The Dube' was not open for business (an impressive run).  According to the Dispatch article, the restaurant got its name from the Hungarian couple who founded it.  The original owners sold it in 1947 to Tess Sicaris, who re-made it into the casual hangout that it remains today.

Sicaris hired three nephews to help him run the Blue Danube.  The lone remaining nephew, George Margetis, continued running the restaurant until 1995.  Margetis then sold the restaurant business to Bob Swaim, a customer of the Dube and former owner of Lane Avenue Travel.  Margetis retained ownership of the 2349 N. High Street building through Margetis Investments.  Margetis' son, Steve, now runs the family business.

Hopefully the Dube doesn't stay closed for long and re-opens as a refreshed version of an old classic.

Two Local Businesses Team Up to Open New Café in Franklinton

A new partnership has formed between two Downtown neighbors. One Line Coffee, a roaster with roots in Heath, Ohio and cafés in the Short North and on Capitol Square, and MMELO, a boutique confectionary neighboring the North Market, are bringing a collaborative experience to Franklinton by next January.

One Line Coffee & MMELO will open on the corner of Rich and McDowell streets in the River & Rich development, currently under construction. Their 2,500 store allows enough room for MMELO to have their own production space, a much-needed alternative to their shared kitchen at ECDI. That “maker space” will supply the café with MMELO’s unique confections, which include gourmet marshmmelos, teacakes and chocolates. But, MMELO co-owner Paul Freeth and OLC’s Managing Partner for Retail Mick Evans said the partnership will go beyond that and into exploratory recipes that use flavor profiles from both businesses.

http://www.dispatch.com/business/20180521/white-castles-new-ohio-state-area-location-offers-unique-touches

The Dispatch had an article about a new White Castle opening today across from Ohio State.  This two-story White Caste restaurant at 2106 N. High Street - just south of Lane Avenue and across from OSU's North Residential Dorms - is located in a renovated Radio Shack location.  The larger building in the background of the above photo is the five-story Wilson Place development - see more about Wilson Place in this development thread - one of five university-area private luxo-dorm projects being finished for the upcoming Fall semester.

According to the article, this is the first time in the company's 82-year history in Columbus that White Castle has a presence in the Ohio State University campus area(!)

Well, there was that White Castle/Church's at High at North Street years ago which wasn't far from campus but yeah, I suppose in the University District this was the first.

Well, there was that White Castle/Church's at High at North Street years ago which wasn't far from campus but yeah, I suppose in the University District this was the first.

That's somewhat in the area (if you don't mind trekking north about a 1/2 mile from the north dorms or a 1 mile from the south dorms).  But I seriously couldn't believe that this was the first White Castle to be located across from the main campus.  White Castle and college students should go together like PB&J!

Well, this news sucks!  Apparently, instead of the Dube closing its doors on June 17th - its new closing date was yesterday at 3PM:

An apparent ICE raid reduced the number of their kitchen staff, apparently.

That would explain the Dube's facebook post about this early closing reported in the CU article:  “Due to some extreme, and very unfortunate, circumstances beyond our control, our staff was cut to a number that will be unable to manage operations any further.”

German Village's destination deli adding a new restaurant

A classic Columbus food name is expanding.

Katzinger’s Delicatessen will add a third deli in the fall at 7154 Muirfield Drive in Dublin. It’ll be the first, but possibly not the last new addition for the 34-year-old brand, which was founded by Diane Warren in German Village in 1984 and acquired by Columbus-based restaurant group CityBrands in 2016.

“We’ve spent the last two years getting acclimated,” CityBrands President Tim Rollins told me. “Our plans are to get this one open, see how it does, work out the kinks.”

"You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

Mad Mex closed this morning.  I'm sure stories/links will be coming.

Very Stable Genius

Meh, I'm surprised it stayed open for so long.

A hopeful update from today's Dispatch about the future of The Dube:

Landlord reveals details for future Blue Danube

The Blue Danube will reopen under new ownership, possibly as early as fall.  But that’s about all that’s certain at this point.

Other details are hazy, such as whether the name Blue Danube will remain, said Steve Margetis, whose extended family has owned the iconic restaurant since the 1940s.  “I would love to open up before football season,” Margetis said. “It would be amazing if I could, but I don’t think I can.”

Margetis said he and his cousin, Jimmy Sicaris, plan to sink an estimated $1 million into a complete overhaul of the building at 2439 N. High Street in the University District.  A new operator for the restaurant has been identified, but Margetis wouldn’t disclose the name because a lease hasn’t been signed.

It isn’t clear just who has the naming rights to the Blue Danube, also known as the ’Dube.  Margetis said it is his intention, if he can keep the name, to use it in some form when the restaurant emerges from the restoration project.  Meanwhile, the interior is going to be completely gutted and new windows will be added to the building.  The exterior will change, too - it will have a brick or sandstone facade, a look similar to the original Blue Danube that opened in 1940.

Roosevelt Coffeehouse Announces Roasting Facility Coming This Summer

After three years of serving up One Line and Stumptown coffees, The Roosevelt Coffeehouse will soon offer a brand of its own. The coffee shop and nonprofit social enterprise, which first opened Downtown on Long Street back in 2015, will add a roasting facility in Franklinton this summer, located at 567 W. Broad St.

Right next door to Defining Skin Tattoo, Roosevelt’s roasting facility will occupy 1,500 square feet of warehouse space at the back of a 6,000 square foot building (the other tenant is unknown). At least for the time being, the space will be dedicated to production and distribution, though Roosevelt founder Kenny Sipes said there’s the potential for more. Conveniently, their location puts them near Defining Skin’s new bar and event space, where Sipes hopes to host some collaborative events.

Swensons update: One restaurant moving forward, no commitments beyond that

swenson-s-drive-in.jpg

Columbus’ first Swensons Drive-In could open in the fall.

The beloved Akron-based burger chain is waiting on feedback from the city of Columbus on its plans for 7490 Sawmill Rd. near Dublin. The development plan for the site was approved in December.

Swensons wants to convert a former FirstMerit Corp. bank into a restaurant and is waiting to hear back from the city on its plans, Ron Dee, vice president of real estate, told me.

“Everything is contingent on the city,” he said, though he noted the hope is to be open by fall, possibly October.

Get a peek inside Cameron Mitchell's new Short North deli-inspired restaurant

Cameron Mitchell Restaurants’ new deli-inspired eatery will serve up both the traditional and the non-traditional.

Harvey & Ed’s opens at 698 N. High St. in the Short North June 12 and while it’ll have a counter where customers can take away a platter of smoked fish or a pound of pastrami, it’ll also have the sit-down full-service atmosphere that is a hallmark of Mitchell’s restaurants.

“There’s nothing like this in our portfolio,” General Manager Jill Armstrong told me on Thursday. “This exists, but there’s nothing like it in the market. It’s deli-inspired. It’s very East Coast.”

Short North White Castle Reopens Today

After being closed for nearly two years, the brand new White Castle reopens today in the Short North, with a unique drive-thru experience and exclusive menu items. Sitting at 965 N. High St., it’s part of the greater Castle Development by Borror Properties, an eight-story building complete with a combined 23,000 square feet of retail and office space.

“We’ve been at that site since 1968,” says White Castle VP Jamie Richardson, “so to be reopening in our 50th year is great.”
