June 20, 20186 yr Inside the new Mikey's Late Night Slice: a secret bar, Pizza Hut and Vigo the Carpathian Mikey’s Late Night Slice is growing up – sort of. The Columbus pizza purveyor is in year nine of business, having started with a small walk-up window in the Short North, grown through food trucks and concession stands, and expanded into full bars and restaurants of its own. Its newest addition – across from the Greater Columbus Convention Center at 457 N. High St., part of the old Yankee Trader building – represents a step forward in business maturity, though Mikey’s hasn’t lost the sense of humor that helped build the brand. “This is the accumulation of nine years of work,” co-founder Mikey Sorboro told me. “This is what we want to build more of.” More below: https://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2018/06/19/inside-the-new-mikeys-late-night-slice-a-secret.html https://www.columbusunderground.com/first-look-mikeys-late-night-slice-at-high-vine-ls1 "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
June 20, 20186 yr It's gratifying that Bon Appetit is catching on to the culinary wonders of the Saraga International Grocery Store at 1265 Morse Road - particularly the Nepali dumpling restaurant Momo Ghar that is located within the store. Saraga and many other immigrant-owned business in the Morse Road corridor have been mentioned here at UO in the Business section back in 2010 - when researchers from Ohio Wesleyan University coined the term "immigrantification" to describe how older strip centers in this area have been revitalized by businesses started by first- and second-generation immigrants. It was also eye-opening to see that the Bon Appetit writer also considers Morse Road to be "on the outskirts of Columbus"(!) https://www.bonappetit.com/story/saraga-international-grocery-store-dreams From the Bon Appetit article: "Saraga is the International Grocery Store of My Dreams. In a former Toys “R” Us, you can buy Nepali dumplings, get your eyebrows threaded, and pick up merguez sausages . . . on the outskirts of Columbus, Ohio."
June 22, 20186 yr First Look: Pecan Penny’s Opening Next Week The time is nigh for barbecue lovers to hit Pecan Penny’s, the latest restaurant and bar from the group behind the Walrus and Olde Towne Tavern. Occupying the building that was the Ray Johnson Seafood Market for nearly a century, Pecan Penny’s will start serving up central Texas-style barbecue on Friday, June 29. The transformation took nearly a year, but they managed to achieve the clean, simple look they were aiming for, says co-owner Kevin Burns. June 23, 20186 yr RAM Restaurant & Brewery Closes Short North Location After less than two years in the Short North, RAM Restaurant & Brewery closed its doors permanently on June 18. A RAM employee confirmed the closure earlier today, though no reason was given. The restaurant’s Dublin location will remain open. RAM officially opened its doors on Halloween in 2016, the Seattle-based company’s first break into the Columbus market. Occupying two floors and 9,000 square feet of space at 906 N. June 23, 20186 yr ^^ Were you thinking this was that former Wendy's in the two-story building at the corner of Spring & High in downtown. This is a new building completed two years ago at 1st & High in the Short North. Previously there was a suburban-style Donatos on the property.
June 25, 20186 yr ^ I did wonder if you were referring to that old two-story downtown Wendy's location. The RAM exterior kind of reminds me of the way that building looks now (after another restaurant renovated the building). Kind of strange that the RAM Restaurant & Brewery closed its Short North location but kept its Dublin Bridge Street location open. Makes you wonder if the on-going streetscape construction in the Short North was the reason.
June 25, 20186 yr The former Columbus Brewing Co. restaurant has chosen its new name A bustling Brewery District restaurant is going through some changes — though its fans shouldn’t be too worried. Owners Doug Griggs and Mike Campbell remain the same. They also own Milestone 229 downtown. June 26, 20186 yr Harvest: Bigger menu in Bexley, Grandview coming soon The name Harvest Pizzeria is the same, but that doesn’t mean the menu is. Grow Restaurants opened its fifth restaurant under that moniker at 2376 E. Main St. in Bexley last week and while the core pizzas and other assorted items such as the pimento cheese remain the same, owner Chris Crader lets the chef at each of those restaurants bring their own touches to the menu. In Bexley, that means some new salads, (such the Commons, which has pulled chicken and hot-pickled carrots among its ingredients) and sandwiches (such as a grilled trout or whitefish salad) are included. Entrees include a steak, half chicken and a daily fish selection. Starters include a charcuterie board and small plates such as poke tuna and a crab roll. June 26, 20186 yr More on CBC Restaurant changes, including a longer time line CBC Restaurant is getting a small stay of rebranding. The 20-plus-year old Brewery District restaurant, known first as Columbus Brewing Co., announced on Monday that it will rename and remodel this summer to become Oxbow on Short. The initial plan was to close after July 4, but the owners now will wait through the summer, instead deciding to close Aug. 31 for the rebrand and renovation. “We don’t want to rush it,” General Manager Rusty Scarberry told me. “We want to invest time to make every thing right. The Akron-based burger chain has chosen a site next to the popular Swedish retailer for what would be its second Central Ohio location. The site at 2200 Ikea Way is also in the shadow of the upcoming TopGolf facility, which is expected to be a major draw when it opens this fall. Swensons is seeking a parking variance for the Polaris site, which is on the Columbus City Council agenda for Monday evening. Swensons serves car-hop style – runners taking orders at your window and running them back out on a tray for customers in their cars – so it needs plenty of parking. July 17, 20186 yr 70s-Themed Good Night John Boy to Open at the Gateway It was recently announced that five new tenants would be heading to the Gateway in the University District. Good Night John Boy, a 70s-themed bar and restaurant conceptualized by the brains behind Flipside up at Easton, is just one of them, and it’ll open up in the old Oxley’s space later this year. First introduced in Cleveland, Good Night John Boy will bring a retro dynamic to the new development at the Gateway. The name is a nod to The Waltons, a TV show that ran in the 70s and 80s whose lead character was John Boy, the eldest son of the Walton family. July 18, 20186 yr Lox Bagel Shop Headed for Old Homefare Spot in the Short North Columbus is gaining the density, in infrastructure and population, of a big city. But what’s one thing it’s missing? A true New York-style bagel shop, says local entrepreneur Kevin Crowley. He’s looking to change that by this fall, with the Lox Bagel Shop, a quick breakfast and lunch stop opening in the old Homefare spot in the Short North. Hand-rolled, fresh-baked bagels, smoked meats, and hearty salads are at the core of the Lox Bagel Shop menu. Crowley, a (soon-to-be) former co-owner of Northstar Café and an industry guy through and through, helms the kitchen. He looks to put out five staple bagels — everything, seeded, sea salt, herb, and plain — as well as two rotating varieties. They’ll be the foundation of four breakfast and four lunch bagel sandwiches. Egg salad and tuna salad will come by the scoop.
