May 3, 20196 yr Way Down Yonder Reopening on the South Side Way Down Yonder has made (another) comeback. After a location in Olde Towne East, a fire at owner and chef Yonder Miller’s home, a hotel stay, and an interim location in Linden, the family-owned and operated business is back in action on the South Side. “The good thing about it is this is our own space. Our own space is something we’ve always dreamed of,” says Miller’s daughter, who’s also named Yonder, but goes by Yanda Millz. “We went through this transition and journey, go through all that to get to us here. May 5, 20196 yr First Look: Community Grounds on Parsons Avenue It’s been a long road for Community Grounds co-owner Joel Cosme, Jr. Even disregarding his childhood of chronic homelessness — during which he roamed with his mother from shelter to shelter in Seattle, Minneapolis, Florida and everywhere in between — it’s been trial after trial as he and his wife Tara Mullins-Cosme have worked to open their coffee shop on Parsons Avenue. Cosme first announced plans for Community Grounds five years ago, subsequently getting hit with family illness, construction delays and bad contractors. Even in the night before soft opening on Thursday, Cosme and co. were experiencing equipment issues, searching for stores open 24 hours so they could get the parts they needed. “We likened it to one of those home repair TV shows, where there are always issues behind the walls along the way,” Cosme said in good humor. May 28, 20196 yr First Look: Roosevelt Coffee House at Gravity Roosevelt Coffee House at Gravity is now open. With now double the locations, Founder Kenny Sipes says they’ll hopefully have twice the impact. “If we can give $111,000 in four years in one shop, then hopefully we can give another $111,000 in another shop, and another $111,000, and it’ll hit half a million in 10 years,” Sipes says. In the four years since Roosevelt was founded, the social enterprise has given to international organizations tackling issues like clean water, hunger, and human trafficking. Sipes says that giving will remain consistent, but with the new shop, he’s hoping to give his staff the autonomy to fund unique, local projects that are important to them. June 10, 20196 yr Short North’s Barrel to Become Fours on High You’ve seen Too’s, you’ve seen Thr3es. It was then that Chef Chris East, who’s been with the space at 1120 N. High St. since the opening of Barrel 44, says it went from being restaurant-forward to putting the bar first, specializing in whiskeys and bourbons. East says that will likely remain the case with Fours, which will offer a limited dinner menu and an expanded late night menu focused on finger foods. June 13, 20196 yr Two Cleveland Restaurants Opening this Year in Dublin, Short North GMOs, hormones, hidden and added sugars — Bobby George, a restauranteur from Cleveland, says our food is filled with the stuff, and he’s introducing central Ohio to some alternative options. Townhall and Rebol, two concepts out of George’s hospitality, real estate and private equity group Ethos Capital Partners, will open this year in the Short North and Dublin, respectively. An opening for Rebol, located at 6605 Longshore St., is set for Monday, June 24. Townhall, which is taking up the first floor restaurant space at the Moxy Hotel, 800 N. High St., will open in September. Expansion from Cleveland to the Columbus market was an easy decision for George, who found the city’s developers to be welcoming to his independently owned and health-driven restaurants. He also sees Rebol and Townhall as filling a void of “real healthy” options, rather than the “fake healthy” choices people have now. June 17, 20195 yr Revamp and renovation: M at Miranova unveils new look and menu to redefine fine dining Fine dining — in that most traditional sense — is a dying restaurant breed, but M at Miranova is confident it’ll be among the last standing. The flagship restaurant from Cameron Mitchell Restaurants opened in 2001 and routinely has been a local standout while also earning national accolades including 13 consecutive AAA Four Diamond Awards and annual honors from Wine Spectator. But the culinary world of 2019 isn’t the same as 2001 and M was overdue for an update. “We want to flex a little bit,” said Chuck Kline, Cameron Mitchell's senior vice president of operations. “Ocean Prime is fine dining now, which wasn’t the case before, so we’re challenged even within our own restaurants. There’s young chefs in town. Jonathon Sawyer (of Cleveland’s Greenhouse Tavern) is coming. We want to be in the same conversation as Veritas. We want to be a place everyone talks about.” More below: https://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2019/06/16/revamp-and-renovation-m-at-miranova-unveils-new.html "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

It's much more experimental, chef-driven and interesting. "Good" can be such a subjective thing. I'm not the pickiest eater, so it all seems good to me. My biggest thing is the value of it. Since I'm a fairly good home cook, I can reasonably replicate much of high-end food at a lower cost at home. But, of course, you pay for the high-end dining experience. Which can be fun, if you have the disposable income for it. As far as inventive and experimental restaurants, Veritas at Gay & High is reported to be the most cutting-edge in Columbus.

July 10, 20195 yr Mexican ice cream shop coming to the Short North A Mexican-style ice cream and frozen treat shop is coming to the Short North. Dulce Vida Ice Cream Factory, which has its original store and production space at 4201 W. Broad St. and second scoop shop at 6140 Cleveland Ave., will raise its local profile with a Short North store expected to open by the first of September. “This is 100% truly authentic Mexican artisan ice cream,” said Vince Fasone, a consultant working with the business and its owner Ricardo Sandoval. “There will be flavors the typical American might not expect. We think it’s a real cultural experience.” More below: https://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2019/07/10/mexican-ice-cream-shop-coming-to-the-short-north.html "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

July 12, 20195 yr ANOTHER Short North ice cream shop??? New Short North Ice Cream Shop CRMD Targets a Younger Audience Move over, all you mom and pop ice cream shops, CRMD (Creamed) is incoming. Owned by husband and wife team Kristina Duong and Benjamin Stoyka, CRMD is bringing an LA attitude to the ice cream business. It’ll open in the old PM Gallery space in the Short North on July 20. Though they’re Ohio natives, Duong and Stoyka just returned from a seven-year stay in LA, where they made connections within the food industry and came across the idea to bring some of the west coast to the midwest. Their ice cream shop CRMD, with irreverent branding, bold theme, and youthful ambiance, aims to bring in the younger crowds barhopping on the Short North’s north end every night. “I feel like a lot of Ohio ice cream shops are kind of mom and pop shops. Like we went to one, and they were playing talk radio. We were just like, why don’t we do something that reflects us?” says Duong. “We play throwback hip hop music, our theme and decorations are very out there. We wanted to aim it more toward millennials than families.” More below: https://www.columbusunderground.com/new-short-north-ice-cream-shop-crmd-targets-a-younger-audience-ls1 "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
