ANOTHER Short North ice cream shop???

New Short North Ice Cream Shop CRMD Targets a Younger Audience

Move over, all you mom and pop ice cream shops, CRMD (Creamed) is incoming. Owned by husband and wife team Kristina Duong and Benjamin Stoyka, CRMD is bringing an LA attitude to the ice cream business. It’ll open in the old PM Gallery space in the Short North on July 20.

Though they’re Ohio natives, Duong and Stoyka just returned from a seven-year stay in LA, where they made connections within the food industry and came across the idea to bring some of the west coast to the midwest. Their ice cream shop CRMD, with irreverent branding, bold theme, and youthful ambiance, aims to bring in the younger crowds barhopping on the Short North’s north end every night.

“I feel like a lot of Ohio ice cream shops are kind of mom and pop shops. Like we went to one, and they were playing talk radio. We were just like, why don’t we do something that reflects us?” says Duong. “We play throwback hip hop music, our theme and decorations are very out there. We wanted to aim it more toward millennials than families.”

The Dispatch had an article about this new CRMD (Creamed) Short North ice cream shop about a week ago under the headline "Millennial-targeted ice cream shop to open in Short North":  https://www.dispatch.com/business/20190705/millennial-targeted-ice-cream-shop-to-open-in-short-north

That completely triggered this Columbus reddit thread:  https://www.reddit.com/r/Columbus/comments/c9sn73/alt_headline_naive_millennials_open_ice_cream_shop/

Seems to be doing decent. I have a buddy that works for the company that redid the place. He said the opening of Columbus brewing has helped push some more traffic.

Looks like the Ruth Chris Steakhouse in the Hampton Inn at Swan and High across from the convention center is close to opening. Just noticed that signage is now on the building.

I forgot all about that.  It'll do better than when it was up at Crosswoods.

Angry Baker Closes Original Store, Other Locations Rebranding

After eight and a half years in business, The Angry Baker announced today that it would be closing its doors in Olde Towne East.  The bakery and restaurant, opened by entrepreneur Victoria Hink, was one of the first of a wave of businesses to launch on Oak Street in the past decade, and had remained popular with the lunch and brunch crowds.

“We want to thank our regulars, friends and those who patronized us over the past 9 years. It was a pleasure to serve you all,” read a brief message posted on social media by the main Angry Baker OTE account.

Over the years, the business had branched out with several new locations.  The second bakery opened on King Avenue in 2016 and a third location focusing more on cakes and pastries was opened in 2017 on High Street in the University District through a co-ownership arrangement with Angry Baker manager Erin Hall.

Columbus restaurants to be featured on 'Man v. Food' this week

Some more Columbus restaurants are getting the national spotlight.  Valter’s at the Maennerchor at 976 S. High St. in German Village will be one of three local eateries featured on the Cooking Channel’s Man v. Food.  The Columbus episode will air at 10 p.m. this Tuesday, Aug. 13.

The episode filmed in May, taking over the restaurant from 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Three dishes will be showcased — a pork shank, weinerschnitzel and the restaurant's Rhine Trio of sausages. ... The restaurant will be one of three highlighted on the show.  The other two weren't disclosed but Cooking Channel teasers reference a bacon-wrapped hot dog and a footlong chicken burrito.

Columbus has been featured on the program before in a 2008 episode that singled out famed destinations like Schmidt’s Sausage Haus and the Thurman Cafe.

The Fireproof Building along North High Street in the Short North has long been one of my favorite Columbus buildings.  Originally built in the early 1900's as a fireproof storage facility, I was thrilled to see the building renovated in 2014-15 into luxury condos (along with a nice addition onto the adjoining parking lot).

Now the Fireproof Building is getting an upscale restaurant - appropriately named Fireproof.  Here's an article about the new restaurant along with a few photos:

From church to chai: Check out the new Stauf's on Neil Avenue

Stauf’s Coffee Roasters is growing again.

The Columbus-based coffee roaster and cafe operator opened its newest addition at 1334 Neil Ave. Friday inside what was the Neil Avenue Presbyterian Church.

"It's total luck," owner Mark Swanson told me. "There's only a few places in this area that would allow a use like ours so we got fortunate."

The lure is evident both in its architecture and its location just a few blocks south of Ohio State University. Potential audiences for the shop include not just students but also residents of the nearby Dennison Place, Victorian Village and Harrison West neighborhoods, which had been lacking a walkable community coffee shop.

Inside the Ruth’s Chris Steak House opening in the Short North

A nationally known steakhouse is getting set for its Columbus return.

Ruth’s Chris Steak House expects to open Oct. 7 at 511 N. High St. in the Short North. It has taken over a pair of ground-level spaces beneath the Hampton Inn & Suites that previously were the Double Comfort and DeepWood restaurants. The DeepWood space had been vacant for more than four years.

“We did a complete gut and rebuild,” General Manager Maria Policastro said Friday on a tour of the space.

It’ll be a new look locally for the brand, which had been in Central Ohio for nearly two decades previously. Its restaurant at Crosswoods, which was an older, darker, more classically designed steakhouse, closed in 2016.

Arena District bar closes after almost 8 years

The Three-Legged Mare at 401 N. Great news to see Ruth's Chris returning to C-BUS.

Only one note though, 511 N. High Street is not technically in the Short North.  It's close, but it's south of the I-670 Cap and across High Street from the Convention Center.  Still, it should be a prime location for an old-standard steak house like Ruth's Chris.  A great downtown spot near the Arena District, Short North and especially the Convention Center (for all those visitors with expense accounts!)

The Short North Special Improvement District goes south to Convention Center Dr including the buildings lining High on the west and the entire convention center and Greek Orthodox Cathedral properties. Although the design guidelines boundary is Poplar Ave.

Technically this is a review of an existing place, and not "news".  But it is "info", so still on-topic for this thread.  Plus, I just admire these humble-but-high-quality old-school joints like this:

Rubino’s: Old-school pizza joint in Bexley a delicious blast from the past

Rubino’s Pizza turned 65 years old this year, but it shows no signs of retiring — or of even slowing down.  Actually, the little place seems busier than ever.  This isn’t because the Bexley restaurant has evolved to keep up with the times.  In fact, it’s the exact opposite of that.

Here is what you won’t find at Rubino’s: TVs, garage-door windows, IPAs (or any alcohol), music, or a clue that the 21st century is well underway.

What you will find, if you follow the arrow of light bulbs twinkling from a 1950s drive-in-style sign pointing toward a small, humble building, is one of the most endearingly idiosyncratic — and most affordable — pizzerias in the region.  If you love thin-crust, old-fashioned pies, I strongly suggest you follow that glowing arrow.

A new restaurant opening in Short North this fall is out to change the perceptions of Indian cuisine. ROOH will open its doors at 685 N. High St. in October.

Part-owner Bhavesh Kishinchand says that five to ten years ago just as everyone thought of Chinese food as a generally take-out only option, but now the cuisine is seeing more upscale eateries, so ROOH hopes to do for Indian with a full-service, fine-dining approach.

Short North will be the third stateside location for ROOH, which also has spots in San Francisco and Chicago, as well as an eatery in New Delhi, India.

Some sad news about Jack's Diner located at 52 E. Lynn Street in Downtown Columbus.  First, the Dispatch reported Tuesday that the owner of Jack’s Diner has put the longtime Downtown restaurant up for sale and might close it unless he can find a buyer:  https://www.dispatch.com/news/20190924/jacks-diner-up-for-sale-owner-cites-downtown-construction-rising-costs

The Jack's Diner restaurant has operated since 1942.  The current owner, Chris Kowalski, bought the greasy spoon diner in 2004.  He closed it for a time after the death of his wife in 2015, but reopened in 2016.  Unfortunately, that's when the area was hit with a construction double-whammy.

Improvements for Lynn Street and Pearl Alley started in 2016 and ran into 2017 - making access difficult for Jack's Diner, whose only entrance is off Lynn Street.  Then in 2017, just after the alley construction finished up, a chunk of a granite panel fell off the neighboring Rhodes Tower facade.  The State of Ohio then moved up its timetable for a planned window replacement and facade maintenance project of Rhodes Tower and large scaffolding to support that appeared in September 2017.  According to the latest Rhodes Tower Modernization Newsletter, work on the north side of the building which faces Lynn Street is not scheduled to be completed until the second quarter of 2021.

The Rhodes Tower project - though obviously needed - made the location untenable for Jack's Diner to continue operating while the project is going on.  Today CU is reporting that the restaurant will close on Friday:

Urban Meyer’s Pint House opens Friday.

The new Bridge Park restaurant in Dublin, named for the former Ohio State University football coach and operated by Corso Ventures, is ready to welcome in fans of both football and food starting at 3 p.m.

The 8,000-square-foot space previously was the Ram Restaurant & Brewery. The split-level design of the dining space remains, but the new restaurant was able to create additional seating with the removal of the old brewing system. That space, where Ram’s brewing tanks once stood tall, now is the 7-0 room, a private dining space that will seat up to 60 additional guests.

First Look: SeeSaw

From Ram to SeeSaw. There’s a new restaurant at 906 N. High St.

Cleveland Chef Jonathan Sawyer – the James Beard Award winner known for The Greenhouse Tavern and Noodlecat – has opened his first concept in Columbus with Short North’s SeeSaw.

SeeSaw’s two floors will have different personalities. The ground floor offers a full-service dining experience, with a menu of “modern American fare with a focus on wood-fired share plates.” Upstairs is geared towards the nightlife and game day crowds with more soft seating and an under-renovation outdoor patio.

Why you might soon be able to buy a White Castle beer

White Castle is considering getting into the beer business — but it’s definitely holding the onions.

The Columbus-based restaurant and frozen food company is exploring some new branded products in anticipation of its 2021 centennial. One of the ideas is indeed a White Castle-branded beer, as reported by the Brewbound blog last week.

“It’s beyond the drawing board because we’ve had some samples, but we don’t have timing on it. We’re not sure how it’ll look,” White Castle Vice President Jamie Richardson told me. “We’re definitely intrigued by it.”

First Look: Woodhouse Vegan

After a year in the making, Woodhouse Vegan has officially launched its brick-and-mortar business inside a small space at 851 N. Fourth Street in Italian Village. The new restaurant is hosting a soft opening this weekend featuring a limited menu of appetizers, desserts and bar food style snacks like loaded nachos and “grilled cheese” sandwiches.

After honing their craft as a pop-up restaurant inside Oddfellows, the Woodhouse family decided to make the jump into a full time restaurant and bar space. The new location is divided into three distinct spaces: a bar with a counter-style ordering system right inside the door, an elevated seating area in an adjacent room, and a back patio in the rear of the building.
