First Look: Vine + Forge

Raise a glass to Vine + Forge, the new bar and restaurant situated on the ground floor of the Crown Plaza Downtown at 33 E. Nationwide Blvd.

The new concept celebrates its soft opening today, Thursday, October 10 at 4 p.m.

For the cocktail connoisseurs and wine enthusiasts, Vine + Forge has some tricks up its sleeve. The bar features two eight-tap enomatic wine machines pouring premium wines other bars typically don’t offer by the glass. For those that have always wanted to try the really expensive wine but not splurge on the whole glass, the eight red and and eight white wines are available in 1.5 oz, 3 oz, 6 oz and 9 oz pours.

Brewery District to get drive-through Starbucks

img0759*750xx5184-2916-0-270.jpg

The Brewery District will soon welcome new Starbucks.

Schiff Properties is planning to convert the Subway at 1053 S. High St. into a coffee shop, said Jared Schiff, vice president and partner at the company. Schiff Properties is taking possession of the space Dec.1 and will build out thereafter for an opening in spring of 2020.

“Coming off of Greenlawn (Avenue) there’s a lot of traffic coming into downtown and we wanted to put a store with a drive through cafe to capitalize on the volume there,” Schiff said. “We’ve been searching for an available space for a while. This one is a great site and has an existing drive-through.”

Columbus burger joint expanding – and it might not be the last time

Preston’s is coming to downtown Columbus.

The local burger joint, which operates as a food truck and a kitchen inside a pair of local bars, is getting a place of its own at 15 W. Cherry St. between Bicentennial Park and Columbus Commons.

It might not be the new last Preston’s: A Burger Joint.

Founder Matt Heaggans, alongside his Ambrose & Eve partner Catie Randazzo, have joined with Letha Pugh, co-founder of Bake Me Happy, and Reed Woogerd, a local restaurant industry vet who’s also developed concepts in Silicon Valley and Austin, Texas, to form Muse Hospitality.

Restaurant Returns to Flatiron Building Downtown

Flatiron-feature-1150x550.jpg

The longstanding Flatiron Bar + Diner departed the Columbus dining scene in late 2018, but less than a year later a new Flatiron has taken up the reigns at the iconic building.

Flatiron Tavern is now open at 129 E. Nationwide Blvd. While part of the name has stuck around, the space is under new ownership and sports a new menu.

The team behind City Tavern, as well as bars Ledo’s Tavern and Park Street Tavern, is now in charge of the space. With the exception of a few crossover items, Flatiron Tavern will have a totally different menu than its City counterpart, with eats largely focused on build-you-own Phillys.

A popular Cleveland restaurant will make its Columbus debut in early 2020.

TownHall is on track to open in mid-January at 800 N. High St. in the Short North with a rooftop bar/lounge called Republic at the Moxy coming after that.

The ventures are part of the 10-story, $54-million building at 800 N. High St., a Crawford Hoying project on the site of the old Haiku restaurant. Other building tenants include the 116-room Moxy Hotel by Marriott, which is opening soon, and a WeWork coworking space, which, according to a marketing email to prospective tenants, is still on track to open soon despite that New York-based company’s current struggles.

Freedom a la Cart Opening First Cafe + Bakery

Nonprofit catering company Freedom a la Cart is expanding with plans to open its first Cafe + Bakery at 123 E. Spring St. Downtown.

“In less than ten years, we’ve seen Freedom a la Cart evolve from a food cart to a successful catering operation, and now, a full-service cafe,” said Paula Haines, executive director of Freedom a la Cart.

Despite changes, one thing has remained constant: its mission to support survivors of human trafficking on the road to freedom and self-sufficiency through workforce training programs.

The Freedom a la Cart Cafe + Bakery will employ about 20 human trafficking survivors, doubling the capacity of the nonprofit’s current workforce training program. While the organization has been focused on catering, the cafe will create a new opportunity for survivors to learn valuable front-of-house job skills like point of sale operation, customer service education and barista training.

Natalie’s Sets Opening Date for Second Location

Natalies-3-620x382.jpg

The concert calendar is already filling up for Natalie’s Music Hall & Kitchen in Fifth by Northwest. Popular Worthington joint Natalie’s Coal-Fired Pizza and Live Music is ready to open its second location this Thursday, December 5 and 945 King Ave.

Natalie’s is taking over the 9,000 square foot former home of King Avenue 5. With nearly three times the capacity of the original, the new location has enough square footage for separate areas for dining and live tunes.

The coal-fired oven is a prominent feature on the dining side, with a menu that goes beyond Natalie’s signature pizzas. There’s an appetizer section that spans charcuterie & cheese and arancini, to oysters and octopus, as well as a handful of soups and salads. The Fifth by Northwest location strays from its roots with a robust section of entrees featuring an Ancho BBQ Braise Pork Shank, Olive Oil Poached Shrimp & Linguine and more. However pizza fans can fear not, there’s a menu of classic offerings and a daily seasonal selection.

Filling a hole: Doughnut shop joins mall food court

The Central Ohio entrepreneur’s C. Krueger’s Finest Baked Goods opened its third store Thursday, this one in New Albany. Meanwhile, its original store at 17 E. Brickel St. in the Short North is set to relocate to a more visible storefront on High Street.

“This is a way for us to get our brand out there,” said Krueger, the founder of Westerville-based Cheryl & Co. who sold that company in 2005 and made her return to the cookie business last year.

Belly Burger Takes Over Former Home of Oliver’s

BellyBurger-10-620x382.jpg

Goodbye Oliver’s, hello Belly Burger. A new concept has taken over the Downtown restaurant at 26 N. High St.

Tucked in the alley just off High, Belly Burger will offer a streamlined menu of, you guessed it, burgers. The signature dish can be stacked as a single, double or triple and the adventurous can add cheese. There’s a lone Cluck – a chicken sandwich – and French Fries are seasoned with salt & pepper.

To pair with their burgers, diners can opt for a Cheerwine Slushie (a cherry soda popular in the South) and make it boozy with the addition of whiskey. They lineup of hand-dipped Vanilla, Chocolate and Strawberry Milkshakes can also be amped up with alcohol.

New look, new focus at remodeled Italian Village restaurant

An Italian Village restaurant is upping its focus on experience.

The Market Italian Village at 1022 Summit St. has reopened after a remodel. The space opened in 2014 as a restaurant/specialty grocery store, but the remodel ditched some of the retail business in favor of more seating and a greater emphasis on dining. The business still sells beer, wine and specialty meats.

Cincinnati’s Macaron Bar Pops Up with Plans to Make it Permanent

Cincinnati’s Macaron Bar has made its way to the Short North for the holiday season. The bakery is operating a pop-up at 668 N. High St., with plans to make it permanent next year.

The Macaron Bar debuted in the Queen City in 2014, specializing in French Macarons. Columbus will be the bakery’s seventh location, with other outposts in Indianapolis, Louisville and Pittsburgh.

Macarons aren’t cooking up in the Short North location just yet. Operating as a hub and spoke bakery – macarons are made in two locations, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh, and shipped to all other outlets – the Columbus pop-up will be a place to simply buy the sweets.

First Look: Bistrolino

Bistrolino-11-1150x550.jpg

Fusing Lebanese and Italian cuisine, Bistrolino Old World Kitchen & Bar will open its doors tomorrow, Saturday, December 14, at 495 S. Fourth St. in German Village.

The new eatery occupies the former home of Harvest Pizzeria, which closed in April 2019 after an eight-year run.

For the new concept, restaurant partners Samer Chedid and Francesco Todisco aim to create a menu that is a taste of both of their home countries. Featuring what Chedid describes as rustic home cooking from the Mediterranean, menu highlights include Lebanese flatbread Mankoushe in a variety of flavors, Parmigiana di Zucchini, Sicilian eggplant dish Caponata de Melanzane and Lamp Chops.

Cafe Brioso opened at the northeast corner of Gay and High back in 2001 and became known for its high quality coffee.  This month, after several months of construction (and several years of planning), it has officially moved across the street into the renovated Citizens building at the southwest corner of Gay and High.

With the move also comes a name change to Brioso.  The new space in the Citizens building is slightly smaller than its original location.  With the new space, Brioso is focusing less on the breakfast and lunch food items from its original location and more on its coffee products at this new location.

Classic root beer brand expands distribution

frostop-screen-shot*750xx1324-745-28-0.p

A historic root beer brand is expanding its reach.

Whitehall-based Frostop Bottling Group has signed a deal with Speedway LLC that puts its products in 75 shops in the Columbus and Dayton areas.

The 94-year-old brand has had a nomadic existence in the past few decades but now is owned by Brian Lee and Eddie Karmia and other partners. Lee retired after 32 years at Fifth Third Bank and, along with some investors, acquired the business. The brand had been owned by the same group that owns the Hoster beer brand and other historic Ohio beer and soda names.

A popular Licking County brewery is adding a permanent kitchen.

“Newark is a growing city and has had a major overhaul in the past couple of years,” Lehne Runyon, co-owner of Short & Stout said in an email. “We’re super excited to be moving out there, which is closer to home for us.”

First Look: The Woodbury

Woodbury-9-620x382.jpg

The wait is over for The Woodbury. The Downtown urban diner opened its doors at 215 E. Town St. in mid-December.

The 4,750 square foot eatery occupies the ground floor of the 223 E. Town St. project, with developer Bluestone Brothers serving as owner, and Olde Towne Partners the concept developers and operators.

Initially announced in late 2017, little has changed from the original vision for the concept.

“We wanted to be somewhere where you could get breakfast all day and be a social place at night,” says Brad Hobbs, managing partner of OTP who are also known for their other Central Ohio eateries, including The Olde Towne Tavern, Corner Stone Craft Beer & Wine, The Walrus, Pecan Penny’s and Duck Donuts.
