January 27, 20205 yr There's an interesting tidbit I'd like to see addressed a bit better by some media outlet or another. Quote The bagel maker will occupy the former home of Taste of Belgium, which left the market after 10 years this winter. When asked about the reason for the departure, Taste of Belgium owner Jean-Francois Flechet said, “The North Market Board decided not to renew our lease. They want to focus on incubating new businesses.” Block’s has been a Columbus staple since it first opened in 1967, offering authentic boiled-then-baked New York style bagels. So, if the idea was not to renew Taste of Belgium to allow fresh concepts to be incubated, how does blocks bagels fit in? Further, sort of when Pistachio Vera and Katzingers came in, why is the North Market allowing established local vendors to start new in the market? It's one thing if that's just the ok practice and they state that, but the mission of being an incubator and welcoming in established businesses seems to defy that mission.

February 4, 20205 yr Surprising announcement that one long-time Columbus diner will be replacing another long-time diner in Downtown: Nancy’s Closing in Clintonville, Reopening Downtown Nancy’s Home Cooking will serve its last meal on Sunday, March 8 at the address it has called home for five plus decades. “We have ran our course at 3133 North High Street and we have come to the end of the road where we are going to leave that location and move to a new location,” says Nancy’s Owner Rick Hahn in a video posted on the restaurant’s Facebook Page. Nancy’s will make a new home Downtown at 52 E. Lynn St., the former home of Jack’s Diner. “In order for Nancy’s to be around, to stay, we have to move,” Hahn says. Hahn says the old Clintonville building has become a problem, affecting their ability to operate. He spent the last year looking for a new location in Clintonville, but whether because of rent, downtime to get into the new space or buildout costs, “Everywhere I went it fell short of our ability to move to a new location,” Hahn says. The Jack’s Diner location provides an already built-out restaurant space left behind by the previous owner. The new address will more than triple Nancy’s square footage, going from 800 square feet to 2,500 with seating for 65. Hahn also adds that although Nancy’s is moving Downtown, he’ll continue to look for a way to bring the restaurant back to Clintonville. Nancy’s Downtown is aiming for a late March or early April grand opening. MORE: https://www.columbusunderground.com/nancys-closing-in-clintonville-reopening-downtown-sp1

Who would have thought that years of resistance to allowing new commercial space would make it near impossible for a community institution to relocate within the same community due to so little options available. There was always the boarded up Burger King? /s Yes, the schadenfreude at Clintonville runs as thick as the sausage gravy at Nancy's(!) Here's another article about it from Business First: https://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2020/02/04/longtime-clintonville-restaurant-moving-to.html
February 5, 20205 yr whoa nancy's is a columbus and ohio institution. its kind of sad news to have to leave their site, but good its still going to be around. i bet there will be no helping yourself to seconds at the new nancy's though, lol.
February 6, 20205 yr It'll be interesting to see if the Nancy's Downtown location survives. The former Jack's Diner interior is definitely an upgrade over the tiny, problem-riddled Clintonville location. But I wonder what customers will be going to a downtown Nancy's vs. the Clintonville Nancy's. Clintonville Nancy's seemed like a real neighborhood hangout kind of place. Also, although the space was small and forced customers to wait for tables to clear, the nearby on-street parking was free. The downtown location will not have free parking - in fact it is rather pricey - even the on-street parking. So it seems unlikely that the Clintonville regulars will make the trip downtown. Will the downtown Nancy's develop a downtown customer base from the surrounding offices and residences? And I'm sure that their weekend hours were also profitable in Clintonville. However, the owner said the downtown Nancy's will only be open 7 to 3 during M-F, with no weekend hours. Maybe this makes sense for a downtown location with most surrounding offices closed on the weekend. And the biggest question mark might be the invasive on-going exterior renovation of the huge Rhodes Office Tower next to the downtown Nancy's location. The safety scaffolding creates a foreboding tunnel effect in the alley leading to the 52 E. Lynn Street entrance. And the Rhodes project is scheduled to continue thru 2020 and into 2021 (i think). Now maybe Nancy's is getting a sweetheart lease deal because of this - and maybe the downtown Nancy's overcomes all these issues. But it will be interesting to see if they can do it.
February 6, 20205 yr ^ After I wrote this post wondering about the viability of a downtown Nancy's, I came across this article about the 52 E. Lynn building: https://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2020/02/05/gahannacreative-agency-moving-to-downtown-columbus.html A Gahanna-based AV production agency has purchased the four-story building and will be moving their company into the top three floors - while leasing the ground floor to Nancy's. So maybe they are offering a sweetheart lease deal to Nancy's.

Tatoheads Public House followed Hal & Al’s as a tenant, but closed last year. Village Taco owners Jonny Stone and Heidi Stone weren’t looking to relocate. February 28, 20205 yr Studio 35 Expands with Pizzeria & Second Screen Studio 35 is a single-screen theater no more. Taking over the second floor that was once an apartment and a projection booth, the Clintonville movie theater has added a second screen – and its very on pizzeria. Owners Eric Brembeck and Rita Volpi have had their sights set on the second floor renovation since they finished the theater’s first remodel earlier this decade, which saw new seats in the main theater and the draft lines expand from 15 to 40. Operating as a one-screen theater had its challenges. Volpi says they had to be right all the time. When screening a Blockbuster film, the movie studio sets the number of weeks it needs to run – no matter how quickly the audience might drop off. March 3, 20205 yr According to CU, Gordon Biersch has closed the Arena District brewery along with other across the country. I hope, that with the insurgence of craft and local brewing since 2001, a local or nearby brewery taps the market and takes advantage of the location. Maybe, just maybe, we can finally see Rhinegeist enter the Cbus market... or Cleveland's Market Garden Brewery can keep up a tradition of being next to public markets here.
