Columbus restaurateur Cameron Mitchell appeared on CNBC to talk about why he closed his restaurant empire during the coronavirus crisis and what the government can do to assist its reopening.  Columbus Business First ran an article going over much of the same ground.  Unfortunately, the article is only fully viewable by subscribers.  So I'll include an synopsis below.

Here is Cameron Mitchell's interview on CNBC:  https://www.cnbc.com/video/2020/03/19/restaurateur-cameron-mitchell-responds-to-the-coronavirus-impact-on-the-industry.html

Why Cameron Mitchell shuttered his restaurant empire – and why he believes he can rebuild it when the pandemic ends

Cameron Mitchell Restaurants had 4,500 employees last week.  It’s down to six today.  The Columbus restaurant company this week closed its 37 restaurants plus the 23-unit Rusty Bucket Restaurant and Tavern chain and furloughed its nearly 4,500 employees.

After Gov. Mike DeWine's Sunday order that all restaurants close other than for carryout and delivery, the company made an attempt to keep some of its restaurants open for carryout business using an already reduced staff, but quickly pulled the plug on that. ... The company was unsure how long it could pay its purveyors and also worried about the health and safety of those employees still working.  Closing also gives laid off workers access to unemployment, something Mitchell said he wanted to happen as soon as possible.

By Thursday, all Cameron Mitchell restaurants were closed.  The company's staff is down to a few legal and human resources employees.  Mitchell described it as "sleep mode." ... The company has reached out to landlords for 120-day deferments on rent, based on an assumption of 90 for the shutdown and another 30 to get back up and running.

National and state restaurant associations are pushing for a variety of loans, grants and other forms of assistance, but it remains to be seen what becomes reality.  Mitchell has put himself at the forefront of that discussion, not just communicating with legislators, but also lining up a series of television media appearances to make the case for restaurant support.  The restaurant sector is a 15-million job, $900 billion annual sales industry and includes about 10% of the country’s workforce.  “Restaurants are resilient,” Mitchell told Columbus Business First. “We can survive but we need help.”

Hot Chicken Takeover, other Central Ohio restaurants opt to shut down rather than continue with carryout

The number of Central Ohio restaurants opting to close business rather than hang onto carryout and delivery is growing.

Hot Chicken Takeover Monday announced the closing of its Clintonville and Easton Town Center restaurants at 3 p.m. today.  It decided Friday to close its North Market and Cleveland restaurants.

“Shutting down our kitchen is the only way we can ensure the safety of the people we care about most and right now, that’s truly all that matters,” the company said in its announcement.

Local operator adding to his German Village-area restaurant portfolio

mid-city-garage-dje*750xx4032-2268-0-378

The owner of Local Cantina has another German Village area restaurant in the works.

Though its opening is paused until after the Covid-19 pandemic lessens, Mid City Garage is slated to come to 1179 Jaeger St. in Merion Village, a few blocks south of Thurman Avenue.

Owner George Tanchevski could not be reached about his plans for the space, but the restaurant’s Facebook page says it is a wood-fired oven concept with a heavy bar focus.

The owner-operator of Tehku Tea Co., a Dublin tea shop and cafe, 55 S. High St., is a native of Indonesia and over her 11 years of running her store found herself making more and more trips home to visit farms and scout products. Couple that with an active place on the U.S. food and beverage trade show circuit and Merriman caught the attention of her home country’s government.

Columbus used to have two, Aromaku and Taste of Bali.  Both have closed.  I dunno about any new ones...maybe Saraga on the northeast side has a vendor in there.

Mark Wahlberg's Columbus plans include 2nd dealership, 1st Wahlbergers burger joint

Mark Wahlberg is expanding more than the auto business in Central Ohio.

...

After Wahlberg teased that they would be opening a Wahlburgers “sooner rather than later” in Columbus, Nino Cutraro, a Detroit restaurateur and partner in the restaurant business, said the first Wahlburgers in Columbus is coming to the Hollywood Casino. That makes geographic sense given the close proximity to the dealerships.

“As soon as this (coronavirus crisis) is over,” Cutraro said, estimating another two or three months.

Mid-City Garage Ready to Open in German Village

Here’s something to look forward to once restaurants resume dine-in operations: Mid-City Garage will open its doors in German Village at 1179 Jaeger St.

It’s another spot in an expanding empire for George Tanchevski, who owns Local Cantina, as well as The Rossi and Local Bar in Short North, Old Skool and SIP Local in Clintonville, and Jonys Sushi and South Village Grille In German Village.

Mid-City Garage shares a landlord with Tanchevski’s two other German Village joints, leading him to the space. Thinking about what kind of concept would be best-suited for the area, Tanchevski landed on a wood-fired oven eatery, serving up pizzas, appetizers and more.

At a time when many restaurants are facing an uncertain future, one local eatery is bucking the trend and actually opening during the coronavirus pandemic.

After talking about a deli concept for more than a decade, brothers and business partners Max and Mitch Stafford have turned it into a reality.

These are the businesses that are REALLY suffering. A business on the cusp of opening or still hadn't due to the pandemic, doesn't qualify for many of the SBA programs like PPP. Believe me, I know.

They don't have payroll figures from 2019. Even though they did exist as a company on February 15th of this year a lack of payroll history will get them the boot -- I can report from PPP purgatory.

Bingo!  I've been heavily investing for 14 months in our next venture set to open May/June.  Payroll expenses began March 1.  We could really use the help. You hit a point where you can't turn back if you hope to recoup any of whats already been invested. Not being allowed to operate at capacity is making it near impossible to avoid financial ruin.

The EIDL loan is supposed to be able to help with that but those are much harder to get since those only got $70B instead of the total of $670B for the PPP. And the EIDL loans are capped at $15K per business now -- though that may have been lifted for round 2.

The List: 80+ Restaurant & Bar Locations Re-Opening on May 15 & May 21

Two months after bars and restaurants were closed to dine-in patrons because of the coronavirus pandemic, the first guests will be welcomed back to local establishments starting Friday, May 15.

Bars and restaurants are allowed to re-open their patios on the 15th, followed by indoor dining on Thursday, May 21. Guests will see some changes at local establishments to meet the guidelines for re-opening as outlined by the state. That includes floor plans with at least six feet of distance or barriers in between tables, employees wearing masks, no self-service stations and more.

Below is a list of some of the bars and restaurants opening their doors as soon as possible. As everyone adjusts to the new dining normal, expect limited capacity at most spots and be respectful of social distancing and other safety guidelines. Most restaurants and bars aren’t requiring masks for customers, unless otherwise noted.

This information is current as of the time of publishing, but continue to check bar and restaurants’ social media pages and websites for hours, guidelines and updates.

Though 'outliers' got attention, local restaurateurs say patio dining kickoff went well:

https://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2020/05/18/central-ohio-restaurants-on-patio-reopening.html

Although C-BUS had two high-profile cases of bad COVID-19 behavior at Standard Hall and Park Street Cantina, most of the other bars and restaurants handled last weekend's outdoor-only reopening okay.

Lindey’s in German Village had a patio reopening with servers wearing masks plus removing all bar seats and spacing tables at least 6 feet apart to comply with the state guidelines:

Katalina’s in Harrison West and Katalina’s Too in Clintonville used an assortment of new signs and marked off tables that can’t be used.  Owner Kathleen Day said sales were up 40% versus the carryout-only returns on other recent weekends:

Pierogi Mountain Moving into Former Grass Skirt Space Downtown

Pierogi Mountain is moving into its very own space, taking over the former home of Grass Skirt Tiki Room at 105 N. Grant Ave. Downtown.

“It’s time that we moved out of mom and dad’s house and got our own space,” says Co-Owner Matt Majesky.

Pierogi Mountain wrapped up a roughly year-run at Wunderbar in German Village March 23, closing just days after the statewide dine-in shutdown was issued due to the coronavirus pandemic. They continued to serve at their Cafe Bourbon Street location, 2216 Summit St., winding down on April 28 to take a step back and plan for the future of the company.

^ Very tough time to open up a new spot - although Pierogi Mountain does have some previous name rec, so that helps.  Nice to see a replacement for the Grass Skirt in this part of downtown.  It's a small space, but the patio space that Grass Skirt used could be further expanded for the COVID-19 era.

More Sheetz:

Sheetz pursuing northwest Columbus location

Sheetz might actually be coming to Columbus proper, not just its suburbs.  The popular Altoona, Pennsylvania-based convenience and gas station company has a pair of sites in the works in Central Ohio: one in Obetz and one in Delaware.

A Columbus site could be next up.  The company is pursuing a spot at the corner of Bethel and Godown roads on the city’s northwest side.  It would combine the site of the former Winking Lizard restaurant and the Budget car rental sites on the northeast corner of the intersection.

A representative of Sheetz confirmed the interest but declined to comment beyond that.  The project also was on the agenda for a special meeting of the Northwest Civic Association Wednesday night.

Brewery District Harvest Opens for Carryout This Week

Central Ohio’s fourth Harvest Pizzeria will start slinging pies very soon.

It will be a carryout only operation at the start, with curbside pickup at 940 S. Front St. in the Brewery District. The menu will be similar to Harvest’s other locations – primarily focused on pizza with a smattering of salads, small plates and sandwiches.

Taking over the former home of Westies Gastropub, Harvest has 5,300 square feet of space to work with – far larger than their original 24-seat home in German Village. When the Brewery District spot does open up for dine-in seating, the front half of the building will be the traditional Harvest dining room. However, the back half will debut a new upscale cocktail bar, The Silo. The Silo will have cocktails, craft beer and small plates, but diners can still enjoy pizzas. It will be a similar set up to how Harvest and neighboring bar Curio used to function.

Company that prints 3D pizzas pivots to the bakery business

The special touch in Gahanna’s newest bakery is almost no touch at all.

Sugr-Bot Bakery launched this past weekend, selling cakes and cookie cakes, but what’s most interesting about the operation isn’t the products as much as the process.

It’s a nearly no-touch operation. Blank cakes or cookies are loaded into a machine that prints frosting and icing designs on the surface. A customer can order a cake online and have it made and delivered within two hours.

“We think there could be a huge market for this,” said Anjan Contractor, CEO of BeeHex LLC, the owner-operators of Sugr-Bot and creators of the printing technology.

The Columbus mall and lifestyle center Monday announced the opening of The Royce, a new restaurant in the lifestyle center portion to the development. It takes over the former 7,100-square-foot Cantina Laredo space.

The Royce is owned by Walter L. Carpenter and it is named for his wife, Royce Carpenter.

Carpenter’s first restaurant industry job was scooping ice cream in a family-owned ice cream shop. His career has been in restaurant management and development where he’s worked with and consulted on more than 50 openings including locations in Columbus, New York, Los Angeles and Atlanta.
