I thought the West Virginians lived in Pickerington and Grove City, why would they put their weird cold cheese pizza in Yuppie Central?

Dave’s Hot Chicken Expanding with 15 Columbus Area Restaurants

Another franchise is committing to big numbers of Central Ohio restaurants. Los Angeles-based Dave’s Hot Chicken will make its way to the Midwest via a 28-unit development deal including locations in Ohio and Indiana.

Fifteen locations are reserved for various locations in the Hoosier state, while the remaining 13 units will open in the Columbus area. It’s the first foray into Ohio for franchisees Tyler Freeland, Todd Hollman and Matt Fortney who also own 45 Pizza Hut locations in Indiana.

“As we continue to expand in key markets throughout the Midwest, it’s vital that we partner with seasoned operators like Tyler, Todd and Matt to ensure success right out of the gate,” said Bill Phelps, CEO of Dave’s Hot Chicken. “Their multi-unit experience is invaluable as we introduce the craveable food of Dave’s Hot Chicken to more people in Indiana and Ohio.”

First Look: Galla Park Steak

Galla Park Steak, 900 N. High St., will finally open its doors today, Wednesday, April 21, in the Short North.

Business must go on, says Adam Solomon of Peerless Management Group, which owns the restaurant along with Fireproof, BBR, Dahlia Nightclub and an additional Galla Park location in Cincinnati.

“We believe that people want a good, safe environment to come out and enjoy themselves and dine and that’s what we’re trying to give them,” Solomon says.

Treat to Try: Freedom a la Cart Cafe + Bakery

Freedom a la Cart Cafe + Bakery debuted its very own brick-and-mortar Downtown eatery this spring. A long-time formidable presence in the catering community, it now makes its goods available for impulse buys on Spring Street inside a polished little cafe.

The menu includes sandwiches made from ingredients that include house-made rosemary sausage or smoked trout, as well as breakfast bowls and substantial salads. Truth be told, it’s the baked goods that beckoned loudest on the first visit. They’re artfully displayed at the counter, in pretty little piles of gluttony goodness.

Tasty Dawg’s first physical location will open at 107 S. High St. Downtown early this summer.

“We wanted to create a fun, casual concept to celebrate the hot dog, one of America’s favorite eats,” says Co-Owner Tom Dailey. “Everything about our Tasty Dawgs will be special, from the oversized, 100% all-beef grilled kosher franks made from select cuts of beef, to the steamed Bavarian pretzel rolls.”

Tasty Dawg’s menu spans classics like the Chicago Dawg and Chili Cheese Dawg, to more uniquely crowned hot dogs with the likes of the Island BBQ Dog, Philly Dawg and more.

Pelino’s Pasta Plans Summer Opening for First Restaurant

While the pandemic has found some businesses embracing the pop-up, for Pelino’s Pasta it has meant making things permanent.

Husband and wife team Vinny and Christina Pelino will take their traveling, pop-up concept Pelino’s Pasta and make things stationary with their first brick-and-mortar restaurant at 245 King Ave. It will occupy the former home of Yellow Brick Pizza.

Vinny grew up in Columbus as part of a large, Italian family. Family gatherings were food-focused and featured homemade sausage, pasta and wine, and great-grandma’s bread, which she made nearly every day of her life. He loved the culture and the food.

Three Bites Bakery Opening First Brick-and-Mortar

Home-based Three Bites Bakery will graduate to its own brick-and-mortar space this summer at 999 Mt. Vernon Ave. in the King-Lincoln District.

Owner Isabella Bonello has been whipping up treats under the Three Bites name for over two years. From growing up baking and cooking with her dad, to working as a line cook before switching to the sweeter side of things, Bonello started the bakery as a side-project and creative outlet.

Then fate, better known as COVID, played its hand.

Bonello lost her job in a corporate cafe due to the pandemic, and when her backup plans fell through, she channeled her energy into Three Bites Bakery.

WOW - seems like a shock.  Although, maybe it shouldn't be.

The pandemic hit upscale restaurants known for their in-person service the hardest, as customers switched to carryout and delivery services.  Sure, you could get the M $75 steak via carryout/delivery - but why would you?  It's the in-the-dining-room experience that supposedly makes it worth $75.

Wonder what will take M's place?

Playa Bowls Opening First Ohio Location Near Campus

New Jersey-based Playa Bowls will open its first location in the state this Saturday, May 22.

Playa Bowls Ohio State will bring a menu of superfruit bowls, smoothies and juices to 1952 N. High St., a former Subway location across from OSU’s campus.

Founded by surfers Abby Taylor and Rob Giuliani, the owners took inspiration from the post-surf treats they found on trips to sunny destinations across the globe, from Panama to California and Hawaii. What started as a pop-up on the boardwalk of their home town has now expanded to 113 locations across the country.

Pattycake Bakery Finds a New Home in Clintonville

A long-standing Clintonville gem has found a new home. But fear not, it’s staying in the neighborhood.

Pattycake Bakery will vacate its storefront of the last 16 years and head just over a mile north to a new, larger home at 3870 N. High St. The bakery will purchase the former home of Flowers & Bread, which saw major changes to its business model due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“We have just really outgrown the space,” Pattycake Co-Owner Molly Shea says of their current location at 3009 N. High St.

Coming in at a compact 650 square feet, not only are team members physically bumping into each other in the kitchen (well, before COVID), but the small square footage has kept the business from meeting all the demand for its vegan baked goods.

Hank’s Texas BBQ Now Open in Clintonville

A new barbecue joint is bringing a taste of Texas to Clintonville. Hank’s Texas BBQ opened its doors last month at 2941 N. High St., the former home of Old Skool.

For the uninitiated, Texas barbecue is all about the brisket says Owner Brad Harkrider. Memphis and St. Louis have ribs, East Coast goes pulled pork to whole hog, but Texas goes beef.

Harkrider outlines the perfect Hank’s order: the fattier side of the brisket with pickled vegetables and white BBQ sauce. It’s just one option on a menu that includes pulled pork, sausage, ribs and smoked chicken. The chicken – brined, smoked then braised – is another highlight says Harkrider.

Grandview area bakery-cafe adding second location near German Village

A Grandview-area bakery and café is expanding to the Brewery District.

Chocolate Café, which opened 14 years ago at 1855 Northwest Blvd., is taking over the former Dough Mama space at 730 S. High St.

Owner Lisa Boyle said she hopes to open in July.

The space will function mostly as a production kitchen for the Chocolate Café’s wedding cake and brownie businesses. There won't be dine-in space, but the cafe will offer a scaled-down menu of its signature sandwiches, soups and salads for carryout as well as retail sweets.

"We’ve really expanded our bakery business,” Boyle said. “We did 3,000 hot chocolate bombs last December and that really pushed us to our limit. This is going to give us more room to work.”

Cameron Mitchell's Short North Mexican restaurant to open in August

Cameron Mitchell Restaurants will open its latest local addition by the end of August.

The Columbus-based restaurant company is doing its first ever Mexican concept at 698 N. High St. in the Short North, a space that previously was its Harvey & Ed’s and for a long time prior to that was Rigsby’s Kitchen.

El Segundo Mexican Kitchen is expected to open by Aug. 31.

Northwest Columbus residents won’t be without a convenient Buffalo Wild Wings location for long.

Franchisee Grube Inc. closed its location at 5240 Bethel Center Mall last week, but expects to open a new restaurant on Sawmill Road in the Target center this fall.

“There were a lot of great memories there, but (Bethel Road) was a tired location,” Marketing Director Rick Small said.

Agave & Rye will include arcade at Grandview spot

Despite the expansive menu of tacos and tequila, Yavonne Sarber doesn’t see Agave & Rye as a Mexican restaurant.

With tortilla-encased creations that include lobster and truffled mac-and-cheese or peppercorn kangaroo or duck confit, some may be inclined to agree.

“Tacos are a delivery method,” she said. “We want to showcase true French techniques. The vessel is a taco.”

This melding of upscale and approachable is a lesson Sarber and her husband Wade Sarber learned here in Columbus where they operated multiple restaurants, most notably De Novo Bistro & Bar downtown, which closed in 2017.

Grandview Ave. is getting weirder and weirder. I mean, weird is good -- it means you're a real town. Not talking about food so much; rather all the businesses added up.

Del Taco now open in Whitehall

The drive to Del Taco is now much shorter in Central Ohio.

The California-based quick-service Mexican chain is now open at 4720 E. Main St. in Whitehall. It’s the third in the Central Ohio(ish) area following units in Circleville and Bellefontaine.

But for those who are already fans of the chain from elsewhere in the country or just curious, access is now a little easier.
