Cameron Mitchell Restaurants Debuting New Concept at Bridge Park

Cameron Mitchell Restaurants will add another to its lineup at Dublin’s Bridge Park. But this time, it will be a new concept.

Valentina’s is slated for an early spring 2022 opening at 4595 Bridge Park Ave.

Inspired by a fifth-generation Italian family winery, Valentina’s will offer Northern Italian-inspired cuisine, fine wines and specialty cocktails.

“We want guests coming to Bridge Park to be transported to Northern Italy and experience all the tastes, sounds and smells that it brings,” said David Miller, president and COO of Cameron Mitchell Restaurants, in a press release. “The story behind Valentina’s is one that our entire leadership team holds close to our hearts.”

Sycamore to open in German Village this month

A revived Sycamore will open in German Village this month.

It’s returning with more than a makeover.

It’ll be serving breakfast and lunch in addition to dinner.

Good Food Restaurants acquired the space at 262 E. Sycamore St. last year. The previous owner was Grow Restaurants, which opted to sell rather than reopen the restaurant during the pandemic.

To make the breakfast offering in particular more convenient, Good Food converted one of the front windows to a carryout window so customers can either walk up and order or order coffee and a pastry online and pick it up.

Pelino's Pasta opening in early August

Pelino’s Pasta is ready to welcome customers.

The restaurant officially opens Aug. 5 at 245 King Ave. in Dennison Place, near the Short North and Victorian Village. It is holding a four-course preview dinner July 31 and reservations for that are still available.

Co-owners and husband-and-wife Vinny Pelino and Christina Pelino said the emphasis is on simple, traditional preparations with a high use of seasonal items. Pasta and sauces are being made in house, not outsourced.

Rise Brands Debuting Weenie Wonder at Bridge Park

Rise Brands’ latest concept will serve up a heavy dose of nostalgia, but this time not through games or cocktails, but hot dogs, jojos and milkshakes.

The company behind PINS Mechanical Co. and 16-Bit Bar + Arcade is venturing into food territory with its first restaurant, Weenie Wonder.

Founder Troy Allen says the concept has been about five years in the making, and Central Ohioans would already be noshing on dogs were it not for the pandemic. Nostalgia drives many of the experiences Rise Brands creates and Weenie Wonder is no different, playing off Allen’s memories of hitting up spots like A&W or heading to the drive-in for a coney when he was growing up.

Like the bar counterparts under the Rise Brands umbrella, Allen also saw a gap in the market, this time for a more fast-casual, quick-serve approach to hot dogs. While there are certainly other hot dog joints in the market, Weenie Wonder will allow guests to customize their dogs through a service style that’s set up for higher volume, with higher-end ingredients.

Lenny's Chicken planning West Broad Street restaurant

A Cleveland-area chicken eatery is expanding to Columbus.

Lenny’s Chicken is bringing its menu of chicken tenders, sandwiches and fries to 3260 W. Broad St., a site that most recently was a Loan Max office, but has been restaurants in the past, including a Jolly Pirate doughnuts.

The Greater Hilltop Area Commission's zoning committee Tuesday unanimously approved the demolition of an additional building that is on that site. Other approvals still are needed, but the commission was in favor of the new use. Signs at the site already tout the restaurant as coming soon.

First Look: Pelino’s Pasta

Pelino’s Pasta is ready to bring an authentic taste of Italy to King Avenue. The previously traveling enterprise and pasta pop-up will make things permanent with their first brick-and-mortar restaurant.

Owners Vinny and Christina Pelino transformed the former home of Yellow Brick Pizza at 245 King Ave., and will celebrate the grand opening of Pelino’s Pasta on Thursday, August 5.

Diners will find a seasonal menu of antipasti like prosciutto and melon, caprese with balsamic caviar, and panzanella salad with octopus, as well as a few small filled pasta plates. As the name implies, the main attraction will be the pasta, made fresh daily in-house. And it’s dinner and a show for guests who order the star of the Pelino’s menu, a traditional Cacio e Pepe, which will be tossed tableside in a massive wheel of pecorino romano.

First Look: The Sycamore

The Sycamore in German Village officially makes its comeback tomorrow, Wednesday, July 28.

Good Food Restaurants purchased the neighborhood mainstay from previous owners Chris Crader and Grow Restaurants last summer.

Vice President and Managing Partner of GFR Tony Heaphy says while they wanted to keep the cozy, contemporary bistro slash neighborhood gathering place feel The Sycamore had cultivated in the evenings, they also looked to the neighborhood to see what residents wanted out of the space. The answer? A place to grab breakfast or coffee in the morning; or have a business meeting.

Law Bird picks Grandview Avenue spot for permanent carry out

Luke and Annie Pierce entered the Covid-19 pandemic with one business, but the couple will exit it with three.

When the owners of Law Bird at 740 S. High St. couldn’t use that space as a restaurant and bar, they turned it into two new concepts – a carryout and a biscuit eatery.

Both performed well enough that the Pierces decided those ideas could stand on their own.

Boxwood Biscuit Co. opened in the Short North in the spring, Law Bird reopened for dining and drinking in May and now the Law Bird Supply House is coming to 1306 Grandview Ave. this fall.

Brown Bag Out, Moody Trudy’s In at BrewDog in Short North

BrewDog is ushering in a new sandwich shop to its Short North bar. Former food truck Moody Trudy’s has taken over the kitchen space at 1175 N. High St.

In October 2020, the brewery announced it would be outsourcing its eats, first handing the kitchen over to German Village’s Brown Bag Deli. The deli quietly vacated the space earlier this year.

“Brown Bag has been an awesome partner for us since launching in our Short North location,” says Keith Bennet, special projects and business development manager at BrewDog. “The partnership was always on a short-term basis, and we wish them all the best as they focus on their iconic German Village location.”

Moody Trudy’s will now answer the call of BrewDog’s desire to bring a deli to the neighborhood.

If you're going to the Crew game Saturday night, something in the Arena District would be a good bet for dinner before or after the game:  https://www.arenadistrict.com/food-drink/

If you don't mind walking a bit, further north is the Short North on High Street:  https://shortnorth.org/eat-drink/

And the North Market is also in the area downtown:  https://northmarket.org/location/downtown-market/

The Dispatch ran this recent profile of 11 different bar/restaurant rooftop venues throughout the city:

https://www.dispatch.com/story/entertainment/dining/2021/08/05/columbus-rooftop-bars-restaurants-offer-great-views-cocktails-dining/7654467002/

The article has photos of all 11 rooftop locations - and they are all great.  I posted a neat drone view of Budd Dairy Food Hall rooftop venue in the Italian Village development thread because it related to some earlier renovation photos for that building in that thread.  But here are a couple other higher rising rooftop venues.

First is the Lumin Sky Bar and Kitchen located on the eighth floor of the AC Hotel Columbus Downtown:

208492622_ACHotel-LuminSkyBarrooftop.jpg.28bf5d171ada86f3fef3c7045f749c48.jpg

Second is VASO located on the top floor of the AC Hotel in Dublin's Bridge Park District.  This space overlooks the Scioto River and the Historic Downtown Dublin area:

768974278_Dublinrooftopdiningview.jpg.784c13a997e0b0ac4cdce4f85eae7c0d.jpg

Finally, a lower tree canopy height rooftop venue created from the top floor of the Antiques on High building at 714 S. High Street in the Brewery District:

Lumin Sky Bar is the winner for me, so far.  I haven't been up the Canopy's bar though so that may be a contender.

The First 9 (or So) Vendors Announced for the East Market

East Market will be a hub of culinary variety when the Trolley District centerpiece opens later this year.

Situated at the northeast corner of Oak Street and Kelton Avenue, East Market’s 40,000 square feet will not only feature nearly 20 vendors, but a restaurant, The Railhouse Tavern, basement speakeasy Switch, and a second-floor event space.

Vendor spaces are filling in quickly for the market, which will feature a mix of restaurants, grocers and retailers.

At the market’s center will be The Butcher & Grocer. The Grandview butcher shop was an early name attached to the project, and will anchor the building with a grocer element. Spanning a number of stalls, The Butcher & Grocer’s lineup will include a butcher shop, green grocer, bottle shop, fishmonger and cheese shop, along with a stall dedicated to prepared food selections.

Restaurant and Entertainment Venue Planned for Downtown Warehouse

Viral cookie franchise opens Hamilton Quarter store, more planned

TikTok-famous Crumbl Cookies is expanding its presence across the nation and in Central Ohio.

The viral cookie franchise — which offers in-store, curbside, delivery and catering services — opened a store at Hamilton Quarter near New Albany Thursday. Casey Price, the store’s owner, said she is building a site in Hilliard and hopes to expand to Grove City in the future.

“We want to help the community as much as we can,” Price told Columbus Business First. “It's fun and bright and new and happy.”

Located at 6326 E. Dublin Granville Road, the store offers six flavors of cookies at a time, Price said. The two permanent flavors are the milk chocolate chip and the chilled sugar cookies; the other four flavors are rotated out of the company’s 120+ flavor selection on a weekly basis, with flavors announced every Sunday night on the company’s social media platforms.

The pub name and menu will remain unchanged.

“The opportunity to become the new guardians of Cherry Street Pub was a unique opportunity for our company that I could not pass up,” Managing Partner Stan Riley said in a news release. “Cherry Street Pub has a dedicated following. … We look forward to continuing the traditions already established, and slowly reintroducing old menu favorites customers have requested. This news about G. Michael's closing - combined with today's news about demo equipment going on to the Whittier Whale site - is double whammy to German Village residents(!)

Actually, this is a real ending of an era for Columbus fine dining:

Unable to reach lease agreement, G. Michael's closes, and Columbus loses an institution

After 23 years of serving upscale-causal fare in German Village, G. Michael’s Bistro & Bar has closed at 595 S. Third Street.  In a message posted on the restaurant’s website and on social media by co-owners Jeff Bentley and David Tetzloff, also the chef, said they were unable to come to terms on a new lease with the building’s owners.

Founded by Michael Reames and Jeff Bentley, G. Michael’s quickly became a favorite among the neighborhood crowd and earned praise from critics, who praised the passionate creations of Tetzloff, who used French, Southern and lowcountry ingredients – among others – to create a well-curated bill of fare.

G. Michael’s represented a turning point in Columbus’ culinary history, where the field of intimate chef-driven independent restaurants were starting to grow in a town otherwise dominated by chains.

Their East Market location will provide not only baked goods on the side—like German chocolate brownies, enormous cookies, and raspberry lemon macadamia nut bars—it’s likely to feature a full bakery, which the North Market space does not have.”
