Tudie’s Cookies & Sweets Aims for Spring Opening in Clintonville

While Pattycake Bakery took its treats north in the neighborhood, a new sweets shop is moving in to fill the void. Tudie’s Cookies & Sweets will open in the bakery’s former space at 3009 N. High St. this spring.

As the name implies, cookies are the speciality of the (currently) home-based bakery. Owner Brittani Hoffman spent months perfecting the recipe that hits that sweet spot of softy and gooey in the middle, nice and crispy on the edges. They’re also stuffed, with all kinds of sweet surprises waiting inside.

Marlow's Cheesesteaks taking Arepazo's spot in Gahanna

Gahanna may be losing a Latin eatery, but it’s gaining Philly cheesesteaks.

Shanika and Jomar Sheppard are opening Marlow’s Cheesesteaks at 93 N. High St. in Gahanna in late April or early May.

That space had been Arepazo for the past 10 years. The owners of that restaurant opted not to renew their lease, freeing the space for a new tenant.

“This is going to be authentic Philly,” Jomar Sheppard said.

The coffee is, of course, Kona, hand selected by the Learys and roasted in Waikiki. Pastries will be plentiful and scratch-made daily.

Local black-owned restaurant's push for expansion comes with boost from Columbus law firm

The family behind Flavor 91 Bistro in Whitehall has developed a loyal following from guests who appreciate how they’ve woven their Ethiopian culture into traditional American foods.

They've also earned plenty of press: The restaurant's Ethiopian dry rub wings were listed as Ohio’s best by media outlet 24/7 Wall Street. And Buzzfeed listed its burger as one of Ohio’s best.

Now, the family is hoping to take their concept nationwide with the help of a team of Columbus lawyers at McNees, Wallace and Nurick LLC, which recently chose the restaurant as one of three Black-owned businesses to whom they will provide a year’s worth of free legal services.

Tee Jaye’s Sets a Date for its Clintonville Comeback

Monday, March 21 marks the return of Tee Jaye’s in Clintonville. The diner headed south in the neighborhood, taking up residence in the former home of Bareburger at 4560 N. High St.

Tee Jaye’s closed its Clintonville home of 30 years at 4910 N. High St. in April 2021 after the restaurant’s lease expired and the parcel was sold.

For Tee Jaye’s President Dayna Sokol, there wasn’t even really a question of if the restaurant would return to the neighborhood. With a large clientele base and the next closest Tee Jaye’s location on the South Side, the hunt for a new space began. Sokol looked at everything from places that were currently in business to spaces that would require a full build out, but fell in love when she walked into the Barebuger space. The burger joint’s temporary closure at the onset of the pandemic had turned into a permanent one after roughly three and a half years in the space.

Quite a bit of new food news today from 614. First, the East Market is getting another couple of vendors. I had heard that, due to all of the delays with getting the Market open, some of the vendors had pulled out. Only one I know of for sure, though, is the Cleveland based one. Ohio Pasta, or something?

Owner of popular Columbus BBQ restaurant opening new fried chicken concept on Near East Side

“If you’re a fan of The Pit BBQ Grille–the popular barbeque eatery owned by former OSU players with multiple Columbus locations–then you’re going to love what’s coming soon to the Near East Side.

D’Andre Martin, one of four owners of The Pit, is launching his very own fried chicken eatery, known as Just Chicken.

And speaking of barbeque, The Pit BBQ Grille will also be opening a new location within the East Market. Martin, who will continue to operate as a co-owner of The Pit, said the two concepts will be separate from one another.”

However, a different Cleveland native will be venturing down here instead:

Beloved Cleveland bagel shop opening first-ever Columbus location

‘“OSU, we are coming for you,” a statement posted to Cocky’s Instagram account reads. “We can’t believe our lil biz is expanding outside of Cleveland, and are just so so grateful for all that have supported us. We owe it all to you guys.”

A Cocky’s representative told 614NOW that it plans to open in January of 2023. The new storefront will be located at 1482 N. High St., next to the Big Bang Dueling Piano Bar.”

Popular East Coast burrito chain opening first Columbus location tomorrow

Bubbakoo’s Burritos is located at 6048 Sawmill Rd. The new eatery will hold its grand opening tomorrow.”

After two year hiatus, Stauf’s is reopening East Side location

“After more than two years, Stauf’s Coffee Roasters is coming back to the Discovery District.

The popular local coffee chain announced yesterday that its Discovery District storefront, located at 350 Mt. Vernon Ave, will reopen for business on March 28 at 7 a.m.”

Pizza Cottage now open in Grove City

A Central Ohio pizza brand is expanding to Grove City.

Pizza Cottage is now open at 4065 Marlane Dr. in the Columbus suburb. It’s the ninth pizzeria for that brand and third new one that’s opened in the past year, following units in Powell and Athens.

Owner Larry Tipton acquired the Lancaster-founded chain in 2017. Its recent expansion was fueled by the departure of the Ruby Tuesday chain from the local market; all three new units are in former Ruby Tuesday locations.

The building at 2374 W. Broad St. has seen a lot of life. Since its construction in 1928, it’s been a bank, a pet store and served as a storage facility for an auction house. And now the address can count coffee roasting facility and used book shop amongst its ranks.

Owner Mikey Sorboro says to expect a more neighborhood slice shop kind of feel for the latest iteration of LNS, as opposed to the late-night party vibe of some of the brand’s other spots.

Whether quiet vibe or party vibe, one thing remains the same: the Mikey’s menu. There are slices, whole pies and a smattering of other eats: wings (boneless, bone-in, or vegan), garlicky breadsticks, pepperoni chips and more.

First Look: Understory Commons

The final piece of the Understory puzzle makes its debut tomorrow. Understory Commons opens at 3 p.m. on Thursday, March 31.

The restaurant-centric Commons joins Understory’s previously opened events space and Lounge at the Open Air building, 2571 Neil Ave. in Old North.

A project of Wolf’s Ridge Brewing, the Commons brings the beer to the Understory equation. There will be 10 drafts – eight reserved for a rotating lineup of Wolf’s Ridge beers and two for cocktails. Co-Founder Bob Szuter says to expect a very seasonal lineup – a few stouts and winter beers now, moving into lower ABV and lighter beers for spring.

Quote

After much anticipation, the East Market has announced its official opening date. It will hold a grand opening celebration on April 30.

Part of the Near East Side’s Trolley District development, the 30,000 square foot marketplace will feature 13 total food vendors (including The Butcher & Grocer, The Pitt BBQ Grille, Yellow Brick Pizza and many more) in addition to two original bar concepts and a second-floor event space.

The East Market is located at 1600 Oak St., on a historic site that formerly served as a repair hub for the city’s trolley cars. The concept, which has been several years in the making, was forced to push its initial opening date back due to COVID-related complications.

Very Stable Genius

New beach-inspired restaurant and bar coming to Near East Side

“While the ocean can sometimes feel like a world away from Central Ohio, one new food and drink concept plans to bring it to the city’s King-Lincoln Bronzeville neighborhood.

Waves Bar & Kitchen, located at 828 E. Long St., is currently refurbishing the 1,746 square foot storefront it plans to call home. The new concept is eyeing a grand opening held over Memorial Day Weekend.

According to co-owners Tanitia Brown, Tim Brown and David burke, Waves is aiming to capture “that blissful feeling of being at the beach,” they said in a joint email to 614Now. “We want people to come in, eat some great food, have a nice cocktail, and enjoy the atmosphere. We want you to feel like your life is at ease with our ocean breeze.””

Agave & Rye adding High Street location

“Agave & Rye Monday said it expects to open at 479 N. High St., near the North Market and the Short North, in early May.

The space previously was home to the Japanese Steak House.

The Short North Agave & Rye will seat 140 inside and 90 on its patio. Grandview will seat 250 inside and 40 on its patio. It’ll also have front windows that open wide to Grandview Avenue for more open air dining when the weather is nice.“

Parsons Avenue Bakery Moving to the Convention Center

J’s Sweet Treats has said goodbye to the South Side, but fans can fear not as the bakery has already found a new home. Owner Juana Williams will move her operation to the Greater Columbus Convention Center, 400 N. High St.

J’s Sweet Treats opened its first brick-and-mortar at 1540 Parsons Ave. in February of 2020, just weeks before the pandemic would upend the world.

Williams says that when they opened on Parsons, she knew it was more of an up-and-coming spot, but revitalization efforts were underway in the area. However, when the pandemic struck, she says the focus understandably turned from revitalization to economic survival. Coupled with a few safety issues encountered by her all-female staff, ultimately, “It just wasn’t a fit for us any longer,” Williams says.

Playa Bowls to open at Quarry Trails

Thrive Cos.' development at Quarry Trails Metro Park has landed a smoothie and smoothie bowl restaurant.

Brett Coleman, the owner of several local Playa Bowls franchises, said he thought his restaurant and the development were a perfect fit for each other.

Both the metro park and the development are occupying land previously home to a quarry, then a landfill. About 250 acres of the northern portion of the site, which Thrive owns, are subject to a mineral lease and will remain a quarry. Thrive envisions other phases of development when that site eventually closes.

Playa Bowls prepping New Albany-area cafe

A smoothie bowl business founded by surfers is catching a wave in Central Ohio.

Brett Coleman opened the first Columbus Playa Bowls last spring at 1952 N. High St. near Ohio State University. Less than a year later the local franchisee for the New Jersey brand has a pair of new locations lined up with more to come.

“We opened (by OSU) because we thought campus would be our core,” he said. “But it hasn’t just been young people. We’ve seen a diverse group of customers.”

First Look: Destination Donuts

Friday is looking a little brighter for one very sweet reason. Destination Donuts celebrates its comeback, officially opening its doors at 3519 N. High St. in Clintonville.

There’s been a void in the Columbus donut scene since Destination Donuts wrapped up its six-and-half-year run at North Market in October 2021.

Opening her first standalone brick-and-mortar shop in Clintonville is a full-circle moment for Owner Heather Morris who grew up in the neighborhood.
