Lost a few good ones but I can't say I'm too upset about most of these places closing up shop. Boxwood Biscuit Company was probably the biggest hit for me, when they first opened the quality was just excellent but it quickly went to much smaller gravy portions and were not able to get the same quality of chicken by the end of their run. https://www.columbusmonthly.com/story/lifestyle/food/2022/12/20/notable-columbus-area-restaurant-and-bar-closings-in-2022/69744304007/ There are some really prominent retail spots available now in the Short North that already have kitchen and bar build outs. I’ll be interested to see how quickly those turn around to new tenants… although I thought Bar 23’s location would have a tenant bt now, so who really knows.

December 29, 20222 yr Great, another vacancy in a prominent downtown location 😬 Tim Hortons to close Broad and High location in downtown Columbus “Tim Hortons is set to close its downtown Columbus location at 2 E. Broad St. on Friday, according to an employee. The Broad and High location has been open for nearly a decade. The space previously housed a Dunkin' Donuts before the rival coffee shop chain was evicted in 2011. The company's other Downtown location, in the Arena District, remains open. Tim Hortons has over 15 locations in Columbus. Requests for more information from Tim Hortons and the building's owner, Casto, were not returned at the time of posting.” https://www.dispatch.com/story/entertainment/dining/2022/12/29/tim-hortons-closing-downtown-columbus-location-this-weekend/69761793007/
December 29, 20222 yr So I heard something last weekend that I found hard to believe - and it came from some friends that are a little hyperbolic... Nonetheless, I had dinner with a group of friends who were in town (CLE) but live in Columbus. They all told me that they do not stay out past 9 in Short North and Downtown because of rampant opportunity crime and - at times - violence after hours in each neighborhood. All of them are night owls, who usually stay out later, so the comment really caught me off guard. I found this REALLY hard to believe, especially for Short North. Is there any merit to their claims?
December 29, 20222 yr Uh...your friends are rare. Short North/northern Downtown is still VERY hopping past 9pm. Probably more than ever since we're "post"-pandemic. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

January 2, 20232 yr I was out in the SN this past friday and saturday (NYE/Peach Bowl) and it was very busy both nights. To be fair the neighborhood has changed over time, and there's definitely more of a bar atmosphere and 20-something crowd now than in previous decades - where it would be mostly older/artsy people out for a classy dinner That alone I'm sure turns off many, but is indicative of the SN reaching a "nobody goes there anymore, it's too crowded" type of vibe moreso than anything unsafe Edited January 2, 20232 yr by NW24HX

January 7, 20232 yr aay i saw columbus is getting ohio's first city winery, is it open yet? fyi -- the wine and food are terrible, but the shows are nice and often surprizing. the owner michael dorf was the founder of the knitting factory, so he goes way back and basically knows everybody in music. i would imagine a lot of the usual common east coast people will come out who dont often make it to ohio otherwise, like willie nile, steve earle, magnetic fields, an evening with aztec two step and other middle of the road acts like that.

January 10, 20232 yr 2 Chainz-founded Esco Restaurant & Tapas ready for grand opening in downtown Columbus There’s a new restaurant and music space in Columbus — one with some celebrity pedigree. The development preserved the Broad Street building that the coffee shop now inhabits, with an eight-story, 100-unit apartment and three-level parking garage constructed in the vacant lot behind. Pre-leasing is underway with the building slated to open in April. Originally designed to be an amenity space for residents, the developers ultimately decided on a more community-focused use. The Downtown location will have the same menu as its Clintonville counterpart, including coffee and espresso drinks, and a selection of baked goods from Stauf’s German Village location, Pattycake Bakery and more. The bright interior space includes soft seating and abundant table-and-chair options.” https://columbusunderground.com/new-downtown-cup-o-joe-opens-next-week-sp1/

High St. Approaching its 20th birthday, Cup O Joe President Mark Swanson says things were getting tired and it was time for a refresh. Plans had been in the works for a few years, then COVID forced some pivots and delays. When it was time to move forward, Swanson tapped Sidecar Creative to help with the rebrand, including a new logo. And it’s not only the Clintonville location that will see a new side of Cup O Joe. The brand is expanding with a second location in the Discovery District Downtown. January 26, 20232 yr Ivan Kane's Forty Deuce bringing New York-style pizzeria to Easton Town Center Ivan Kane hoped to create a destination with his Easton Town Center restaurant and night club. He got halfway there. Ivan Kane’s Forty Deuce opened in January 2020, featuring a restaurant on its ground floor and an upstairs speakeasy/nightclub hosting burlesque shows on the weekends. What may seem like the more challenging part of that equation — the shows — has been a hit. It’s the restaurant part that was in need of a change. “I want the downstairs to match the success of the upstairs,” Kane said. “Do we make a subtle change or dramatic one? I’ve never been one to shy away from big.” So dramatic it is. That more than 3,000-square-foot downstairs is in the midst of a full renovation and is expected to reopen Feb. 2 as a pizzeria and bar serving up New York-style pizzas.
