Akron-based La Loma moving into Upper Arlington restaurant space

An Upper Arlington restaurant space is getting a new user, but not a new cuisine.

The building at 3051 Northwest Blvd., which most recently was Barra Tacos and prior to that was Yabo’s Tacos, will continue to be a Mexican restaurant, but the new operator is touting a more authentic offering.

Akron-based La Loma will open its first Columbus-area location at that site, according to documents filed with the city of Upper Arlington.

Spaghetti Warehouse commits to new downtown home over potential Franklinton return

The Spaghetti Warehouse, which already moved once, doesn’t seem to be moving again after all.

The historic Columbus restaurant just returned to business in a new downtown space at Columbus Commons late last year. Despite its owners' involvement in plans to redevelop its former home, though, the restaurant plans to stay put at that new location.

Skip Weiler, of Robert Weiler Co., told Columbus Business First last week that the restaurant would be coming back to the 397 W. Broad St. property as part of a 15-story, mixed-use project planned for that site and the Columbus Commons space would then become a new restaurant.

3 New Vendors Open at Bubbly Hall Amid Turnover, Lawsuit

It’s restaurant No. 2 for a brand that opened 25 years ago in Charleston, South Carolina, where it remains a fixture in that culinary community.

“We’re a low-country seafood brasserie,” said Hank’s Culinary Operations Manager Frank McMahon, who has been with the business since the beginning. “It’s timeless, genuine.”

Ray Ray’s “Reloads” for Truck Move

Another Ray Ray’s truck is on the move. The popular barbecue food truck has left its post in Powell at Nocterra Brewing Company to set up shop in Victorian Village later this month.

Ray Ray’s Reload will open at The Bottle Shop, 237 King Ave., on Tuesday, March 19. The “Reload” version will see both the truck and the menu get a makeover.

Offering a more eclectic menu, Ray Ray’s says Reload will feature “a more diverse and technique-driven spread.”

“[Owner] James [Anderson] has been hard at work reimagining how to deliver a new sensory experience that stays true to his BBQ roots but shows that within that scope, there’s a range of ideas, dishes, and flavors that have yet to be explored around Columbus,” a press release stated.

DiBella’s Subs will double its Central Ohio footprint this year.

The family-owned, Rochester, New York-based chain opened its first Central Ohio shop on Tuttle Crossing Boulevard in 2011 and followed it quickly with one by the Lennox Town Center in 2012.

It’s been quiet since then expansion-wise, but that changes this year.

Lion Cub's Cookies opening its Worthington store Friday

A Columbus cookie shop is opening store No. 2 this week.

Lion Cub’s Cookies on Friday opens its new location at 7105 N. High St. in the Worthington Gateway.

“This is going to make us more accessible to Columbus,” Lion Cub's owner Brad Kaplan previously told Columbus Business First. “We’ve had requests to open here, to open there – insert any city you want. We’ve heard it all.”

Kaplan started Lion Cub’s as a popup prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, but it was during that chaotic 2020 where he built up the brand through cookie deliveries. He opened his first brick-and-mortar shop in Grandview Heights the next summer.

Black Kahawa Brings Coffee Back to Broad & High with New Patio Service

For the past year, the prominent Downtown space at Broad & High — formerly inhabited by retail chains Tim Horton’s and Dunkin Donuts — has sat dark. But soon, coffee fans will be able to return for a new local option thanks to Black Kahawa.

“After being introduced to the building owner, Michael Tomko, I was impressed by his commitment to have local owner operators at the ground floor of his downtown properties,” explained Black Kahawa founder Douglas Buckley. “I also saw an opportunity to fulfill a long-term goal I had, which is to put wholesale coffee roasting on public display as an experiential form of artistic expression.”

Bears Bagels Opening Brick-and-Mortar

While Bears Bagels has developed a consistent lineup of spots to find its popular bagels, fans will soon be able to go straight to the source.

Bears Bagels will open its own brick-and-mortar storefront at 4142 Main St. in Hilliard, the former home of DiCarlo’s Pizza. The shop is slated to open later this spring or early summer.

There will be even more bagels to love as Founders Charis and Lo Yost expand their menu in their very own space. A current core menu of four bagels (plain, everything, rosemary sea salt and sesame) and three schmears (plain, roasted veggie and toasty everything) will become eight to nine bagels and six to eight schmears. They will also rotate in monthly specials and some limited weekend features.

Coast Wine House Expanding with Restaurant Gene’s

Patrons of Historic Dublin’s Coast Wine House had one consistent piece of feedback for the nearly four-and-half-year-old wine shop: more food. The shop is ready to answer the call with new full-service restaurant Gene’s.

Situated at 91 S. High St., the eatery is just down the block from Coast Wine, which opened in December 2019 at 75 S. High St. Dustin Snow, owner and operator of both businesses, describes Gene’s as a neighborhood restaurant – it will feel “fresh yet familiar, sophisticated but unfussy.”

Chick-fil-A targets Polaris Parkway for next location

Another restaurant building will be bulldozed to make way for a new Chick-fil-A.

The Atlanta-based fast food chain plans to redevelop 1515 Polaris Pkwy. That’s currently the site of a MacKenzie River Pizza Pub & Grill. That restaurant closed last month and, according to city documents, will be demolished to allow for the new restaurant.

Chick-fil-A has yet to comment on its plans and the timeline for that site nor on the fate of its existing location at 8787 Sancus Blvd., which is just a mile away from the new site.

Bears Bagels taking former DiCarlo's Pizza space in Hilliard

A local bagel brand that began during the pandemic is prepping a shop of its own.

Bears Bagels will move into 4142 Main St. in Hilliard, a spot previously occupied by a DiCarlo’s Pizza.

The business is owned by husband-and-wife Charis and Lo Yost, who started Bears while being, in their words, “cooped up” during the Covid-19 pandemic.

They spent last year traveling to area farmers markets and wholesaling to local cafes and retail stores including Coffee Connections in Hilliard, Florin Coffee in North Linden, both Bada Bean Bada Booze locations, the Beechwold Farm Market and the Schumacher Place Winter Market at Parsons North Brewing.

CRIMSON Expanding with Campus-Area Location

Local coffee roaster Crimson Cup will expand its spinoff flagship brand CRIMSON with a new shop near The Ohio State University.

CRIMSON will open this spring inside the St. Thomas More Newman Center at 64 W. Lane Ave. CRIMSON will occupy approximately 750 square feet of space inside the Catholic church and operate as any traditional independent coffee shop. They will share some seating that’s part of recent renovations at the center.

“The Newman Center reached out to us with an opportunity to add a coffee shop on Lane Avenue,” the CRIMSON team shared. “The Newman center is in a prime location near campus and the campus population is international, so this presented interesting possibilities to expand our brand and reach a truly international population.”

French bistro Chouette opening at intersection of High and Gay downtown

"A growing restaurant group will bring a French bistro to downtown Columbus this summer.

Dallas-based Makeready plans to open Chouette at the northeast corner of High and Gay streets. The restaurant will occupy a 2 E. Gay St. spot that was once partially home to Brioso Coffee’s original location.

The coffee shop moved across the intersection in 2020 to make way for Edwards Cos.' redevelopment of the Madison and White-Haines buildings.

Makeready President and COO Christine Magrann described the forthcoming concept as a classic French bistro, but not “stuffy."

The restaurant is expected to seat 121 inside and another 44 on its outside patio, which Magrann expects to be the most sought after seats, especially for weekend brunch, which is a big part of the plan."

Former Home of Tasi Becomes Private Event Space

Tasi Cafe closed its doors last August after a 17-year run in the Short North, but the space will now see new life as a private event venue helmed by Christina and Vinny Pelino.

It’s the couple’s third venture in Columbus. They opened Pelino’s Pasta at 245 King Ave. in August 2021, following it up with the recently-opened Piazza Pelino at 772 N. High St. in the Short North. The new event venue will be named Pelino’s on Pearl. They’re really committed to alliteration at this point, Vinny jokes.

Vinny says from the outset, Pelino’s Pasta has been an experienced-focused restaurant, hosting wine dinners and pasta making classes. They’re also a busy, growing restaurant, and balancing events and dinner service can be a challenge. They’re limited on what kind and how often they can host events.
