I finally got around to taking photos of South Hills, a part of the Old Brooklyn neighborhood that is truly awesome. 

 

The area I shot is roughly bordered by Broadview Road to the west, West 11th Street to the east, and Spring and West Schaaf Roads to the north and south, respectively.  However, not all of that area is considered South Hills, to my knowledge.  The streets that traverse through it and on which many of these photos were taken are South Hills Boulevard, Broadale, Cypress, and Dornur Roads.

 

You can also check out my photos from the Oak Park area of Old Brooklyn, which is about a half-mile away from South Hills, and the Benjamin Franklin Community Garden, which is gigantic and is located in South Hills.

 

The Neighborhood Connections program of the Cleveland Foundation, which provides small grants to neighborhood groups for neighborhood projects, sponsored this little circle.

 

 

 

 

This area is home to many City employees and safety personnel.

This was taken outside the aforementioned boundaries.  It's a subdivision done in the 1990s.

 

 

There are still some operating greenhouses in the neighborhood.  According to NeighborhoodLink, the neighborhood at one time was one of the nation's leading producers of vegetables grown in greenhouses.

 

Here's another shot of the same one.  It's on West 11th Street.

 

And one more.  There are a few large farms on Schaaf Road in Brooklyn Heights.

A replacement door wouldn't be a problem. Coppa Woodworking has almost everything you could imagine, and more of that stuff was catalog material than you might expect.

Those greenhouses are in Cleveland. To my knowledge, they are the last remaining ones in Old Brooklyn.  There are some east of I-176, including Rosby's berry farm, but I believe those are in Brooklyn Heights.

3231, the closest Catholic church is St. Leo's (which is having its annual festival August 1-3), but it's still a solid half-mile to a mile away.  STM, which was formerly my parish, is on the opposite side of Old Brooklyn towards the west and Brooklyn.  And OLGC is dead in the middle of it on Pearl near where it intersects with State Road.

Ah St. Leo's, we beat them 17-0 in sixth grade in soccer.

3231, I would say, "Old Brooklyn is another under-appreciated and virtually unknow neighborhood in Cleveland."

 

Listening to most, outside of the folks here, every street is decayed and every home is vacant or a foreclosure and people are leaving in droves.

^ If you watched Fox 8 this morning, their question of the day was something along the lines of, "What's making you stay in Cleveland?"  While I watched, there wasn't one good thing said by the people who called or texted.  I was disappointed that Wayne Dawson, as a Cleveland resident, didn't step up and say something about how rockin' Cleveland is.

Wow, very nice.  Being the East Sider I am, my view of OB is simply modest frame houses.  This area's is a hidden gem... Cleveland's amazing in its neighborhood diversity.

I rode my bicycle through South Hills as an adolescent very often. Schaaf sits atop of a hill, and those side streets don't have too much traffic, and I would coast down those hills.

 

The neighborhood is underrated. Most of the housing stock in South Hills is a bit better and larger, in terms of sq. footage of the house with larger front yards than other areas of Old Brooklyn. Growing up, very few, if any, of my classmates at OLGC were from South Hills; I'd imagine most went to St. Leo's instead.

 

Also interesting to note: Next to the south hills area (or perhaps this area is still south hills neighborhood),

there's a development of ranches (west of 176, south of spring, north of schaaf, east of morningside) except for 1 or 2 streets that have different housing stock than the development and the rest of the neighborhood.

 

The garages are out in front, [there's probably an architectural style for these houses, I don't know the name]. That street reminds me of the southwest USA for some reason (I often biked through it in the late 90s, early 2000s, from what I remember, a few of those houses on Sheryl had gravel instead of grass for their lawns)
