After I tortured myself in Tampa, I worked my way over to St. Petersburg to catch a Tampa Bay Rays game.  I wasn't expecting much as my previous thoughts were that St. Pete was the step child of the Tampa-St. Petersburg area.  I was wrong...it really gave off the feeling of being a new/improved Tampa.  The two are very close to one another and St. Pete seems to be attracting the vast majority of new investment/interest.

St. Petersburg had some nice new stuff, a nice waterfront area (with parks, marina, and everything), some interesting buildings/architecture, and actual activity.  Add in some of the new stuff that St. Pete is planning for (i.e. the new downtown Rays ballpark which will be right on the water - very cool) and you have yourself an interesting place.

1. We'll start things off along the waterfront

16. A new development similar to the Centro Ybor place in the Tampa thread.  The difference here is that this development seemed to fit with its surroundings, and people were using the space.

Nice pics.  I hate those Mediterranean-esq buildings.

Did you visit the Salvador Dalí Museum? (which originated in an office building in Beachwood, OH)

Nope, didn't get to that.

Hmmm .. not exactly on my itinerary of cities I wanna visit.

You're the second mod that has said that St. Pete is better than Tampa (the pope was the first).  I see why.

Wow - I haven't been to St Pete since my grandma died in 1994, and I barely recognize the place except for the funky inverted pyramid on the pier in picture 2.  Nice shots.

St Pete is much nicer than Tampa. The pics you took are nice, but that areas is the redeveloped waterfront. It is  ofall-y...but it was pretty neglected before. It is hard to hate the waterfront-beautiful. Living in St. pete was great compared to Tampa. We only lived there for a year but it was a more positive expereince than years in Tampa.

Plus in St Pete you have Ft. Deseto Beach. the best in the area IMO. Very natural, some historical sites (forts from Spanish Indian War), and miles and miles of remote bike paths and kayaking. All within 15 minutes of DT st. Pete. http://www.pinellascounty.org/park/05_Ft_Desoto.htm

The most interesting nabe by far is Old North East, just north of Downtown. http://www.stpete.org/neighborhoods/nnnor.htm

If some horrible circumstance found one relocating to the area, I would lean st. Pete over Tampa. While still provincial and leaning conservative (old people!) it has more amenities than Tampa

Think that's wild?  Just wait until this next round of projects gets done.

HOLY COW. That is amazing. although I understand things are stalled.

I wish we had bought that dumpy coop in 98 on the waterfront  for $39,000.

St. Pete is really moving their downtown in the right direction. I also found the St. Pete surrounding neighborhoods to be more urban than most of the surrounding neighborhoods in Tampa.

Don't hold your breath on the new Ray's field along the waterfront.  The project is being rethought, and may be built elsewhere.

Man, the EIFS salesmen are making big money in Florida right now.
