Hey Guys. What is my best bet for a nice afternoon on a Lake Erie beach. I'm looking for no more than 1ish hours driving from Cleveland.

I was thinking either Mentor Headlands or Huntington, but I definitely want to hear suggestions.

My main concern is beach cleanliness, which I have found Edgewater to be lacking, although the views of DT there are awesome!

I usually go to Mentor Headlands..I havent had a bad experience yet and I have been for like the past two weeks. But I have heard that Huntington is a little cleaner..but I have never been there and I dont know how the waves are.  I am pleased with the waves at Headlands.  My friends from Brooklyn and Jersey liked Headlands though!

i would say whatever's easier or flip a quarter -- i always liked both of them. um, honey hut is a bonus at huntington.

I too say they are both nice.

someone from the area can help me out. There are 2 in Avon lake-not the boat launch one, but the other. I cannot think of the name, but the swimming looks great there. The beach is kind of small, and there are some rocks and jetties to jump off. The water looked clear and inviting.

Headlands is beautiful

Both have a boat launch and a small beach.  There is Miller Road park, with the newer, bigger boat launch.  It also has more beach.  It is just west of the massive coal power plant.  There is also Veteran's Memorial, which is probably the one you're talking about, with lots of jetties/piers.  That is at the north end of rte. 83.

My favorite by FAR between Mentor Headlands and Huntington is Headlands. It's a bit more of a hike out there, but I think it's so worth it. It's generally cleaner, a bit more secluded, and overall just nicer in my opinion.

Honey Hut (by the way, STILL my favorite ice cream ever) is not enough of an incentive for me.

do either of these beaches have a dog beach?

also, not sure if this has been posted elsewhere on UO, but the sewer district has a "Nowcast" service for beach and water conditions: http://www.ohionowcast.info/index.asp

And just as a general FYI, never go swimming the day or two after heavy rains. Its not a unique problem to Lake Erie, so don't feel bad Ohio. (my own personal rule)

anyone have some images of mentor headlands?  I think I've seen huntington on UO but can't seem to remember seeing headlands.

What beach is this?  It is on the westside of Cleveland...

Cedar Point Beach is nice as well, albeit crowded and it costs money to park at Cedar Point.  If you happen to know someone who owns a home on the Chaussee (that narrow little strip of land that Cedar Point juts out on)........that private beach (few miles long) is spectacular!

I wouldn't discount the Villa Angella Beach in Collinwood neighborhood.  It is much much cleaner then Edgewater and doesn't get crowded.  I have found that beach to be very relaxing and enjoyable.

Have you considered the beach at Fairport Harbor?

http://www.lakemetroparks.com/select-park/fairport.shtml

This was the beach nearest to me growing up. Back in the day it was fairly dirty (dead fish constantly washing up onshore) due to the nearby (within close viewing distance)--but now long demolished--Diamond Shamrock chemical plant which dumped its pollutants into the Grand River and out to the lake. Although nearby Headlands was considered much nicer, the local yokels complained that on weekends especially it was overrun by obnoxious Clevelanders :x. And if you don't happen to find the beach so nice, pay a visit to the historic Fairport Lighthouse & museum. Great views from the top:  http://www.ncweb.com/org/fhlh/

I still think Headlands is the best. I have seen Fairport, but it really did not look as swimable because of proximity to the river. Headed to Headlands tomorrow...
