I often wonder what neighborhoods that the Metro Cleveland Urban Ohioans currently live in.

I thought it would be neat to see where everyone lived and hear a brief reason as to why they chose where they currently live.

I didn't do outer counties.

I am a west sider at heart.  Most of my adult, post-college life has been spent in the west side suburbs. First lakewood, then some parts of Cleveland over the lakewood border, then I left town to move to LA.  When I moved back, I moved to North Olmsted as there was a lot of retail there and that was important to me.  I enjoyed it there and lived in a couple of different apartments in NO, and then when I met my husband, we moved to an apt Westlake, which I loved even more.

My husband and I both got laid off in the same week, the week after our wedding.  After 2 months of HARD looking neither of us had been able to find anything and it became clear we weren't going to be able to continue to afford the rent and that we'd need to move to a cheaper apartment.  Our management company agreed to let us break our lease with no penalty if we moved into one of their other properties, which are scattered about here and there.  We looked at several of them and chose the property in Middleburg as it seemed to have things that are important in an apartment to us (long list which is probably not that interesting to most people - if you want to know, I can tell you).  We've ended up staying here much longer than either of us anticipated.  We love the complex itself - we have tennis courts, volleyball court, basketball (1 full court, 1 half), a "resident's" garden where we are growing our own veggies, 2 outdoor and one indoor pool, a good workout room with small locker room with a sauna and a beautiful large pond in the middle that draws all kinds of wildlife, which is great to walk or jog around.  We love our apartment itself, we love the amenities we have, etc.  Our biggest complaint is that there's not a lot of good restaurants close by, or good stores in walking distance. The Heinen's there is one of the worst IMO, and Southland is dead dead dead.  But the metroparks are super close by and South Park mall is only a few minutes away so it's a good compromise.  If there were really good stores and restaurants in walking distance, I would LOVE it there.

Lived in the dorms at Case for 4 years, so when I decided to stay for grad school, I wanted to move somewhere close, but not on or adjacent to campus (mostly for a change of pace).  I decided on Shaker Heights because it was safe (as a young female living alone), but it still had an urban feel with a little more grass and trees (after all, I did grow up in the suburbs).  Well, after 2 years, the grass and trees got boring, and as you all know I now live downtown.  There was no way I would've bought in Shaker at this time anyway - all those taxes and no children to send to Shaker Schools?  Heck no!  Anywho, that's my story.

And the 8743th iteration of a "living" thread begins.

LMAO. Don't be stinker!  I took forever to type all that!

At least you could have given the thread an appropriate title.

I've lived in Cleve Hts. for about a year.  Looked between Shaker Sq., Shaker Hts., and Cleve Hts.  Found a house we loved on the Shaker-Cleve border in the Ludlow neighborhood, but unfortunately it wasn't meant to be.  Eventually found our current abode in Cleve Hts.

My wife and I chose Cleve Hts mainly due to our kids.  We were drawn to downtown living, but with the kiddies, we more drawn to having a yard.  Cleve Hts really gave us what we wanted; it close to all the urban ammeneties we like, it's walkable, close to public transportation, and it's safe.

But there's no Bratenahl...

I actually think this is a pretty cool poll. It is interesting to see where people fall-I wonder if anyone will be from somewhere like Linndale?

Can we add a "don't live in Cleveland at the moment but want to respond so I can see the poll results" button?

and while we're at it, Highland Hills isn't listed.

Cleveland – Downton

I've never heard of this Cleveland neighborhood. Where is it? Close to the lake? ;-)

Parma.  Grew up in Chardon...LOTS of snow but loved it.  My wife is from Parma and we found a house we loved there so I'm an east side transplant but still work on the east side (shaker heights)  Love for the urban core grew from living and studying architecture in Florence, Italy for 6 months.  Ok that's the end of my brief autobiography.

oops! you mentioned Chardon. Even tho' that's probably part of "Metro Cleveland" this poll doesn't "do outer counties."  Apparently everybody outside of Cuyahoga County are bunch of hicks

Someone else can do the other counties!  I jus tthought it would be interesting to see where in the county people lived.  I mean we have folks from Bay and Richmond Hts.  Who are those folks?  :?

I don't have to tell you kids why I chose Shaker Square

You Lake County Balla!

More like ballin on a budget

Lake, Geauga and Lorain countians are the bridge-and-tunnel crowd of the Cleveland area!

Don't forget Summit, Portage and Medina.  LOL

ok...no bashing just reasons why you move to your neighborhood!

Orange. Liked the development, and liked the schools (my wife went to Orange schools). She's a permanent east-sider. I'm the husband. I went where I was told.

I would argue those from the far out Cuyahoga County suburbs are Cleveland B&Ts, but I wouldn't want to cause a fight.

OK, can you tell me how Willowick just outside Cuyahoga is less 'urban' (density 5744 ppl/sq mi) than in-county Solon (density 1058)?  Just so you know, Willoughby Township was originally in Cuyahoga.  Lake County was pieced together with what was northern Geauga and Willoughby Twp (now the Ws, Eastlake, Timberlake, and Lakeline) to form its current configuration.  Willowick is pretty much indistinguishable from Mayfield Hts, except with less traffic since the sprawl wave of development continued thru to Mentor instead of stopping at Mayfield due to the ritzy Chagrin Valley burbs (which are somehow more urban being in Cuy).  It's quicker to get downtown from western Lake than it is from Strongsville.

Thanks. I didn’t know that about Lake County—I was only born and raised there! (Painesville). I guess I should have paid more attention in jr. high Ohio history class. (Then again, my “teacher” was more interested in talking about football—and it was the first year ever for the SuperBowl—that’s how old I am). The most interesting fact I recall was that Abraham Lincoln made a speech from his train at the Painesville depot in 1861. Haven’t been back for a long time but I think the Mentor sprawl has spilled over into Painesville Township and Leroy, while the city itself continues to decline.

PS. My only recollection of Willowick was a Chinese restaurant in a strip mall on Lakeshore Blvd. and a nearby movie theater--now probably gone--that was in the 70's.

^I feel ya.  My wife was born an east sider, so crossing the river wasn't an option.  Not originally being from the Cleveland area, I really had no real strong bias towards east or west, but she would never consider moving to the dark, I mean, west side

the chinese restaurant is either chin's pagoda or hundred flowers, both still there (afaik).  if it was in a larger strip it was the former.  funny, my history teachers were also mostly football obsessed, then tried to take credit when i became a national merit scholar.  one of them pronounced Nantes (french) "nan-tease."  it was bad.

National Merit Scholar!?? I felt lucky to rank in the upper fourth of my class--and my public school system was one of the worst in Lake Co! I don't even think we had any NMS's (although our valedictorian was Ivy League and got a Stanford MBA and is now some big hotshot Fortune 500 exec--not that we keep in touch ). That's funny about Nantes--I hope that wasn't the French teacher! And I think it might have been Chin's Pagoda--back in the 70's a name like A Hundred Flowers would have been way too esoteric for an American Chinese restaurant.

it's nice to be recognized, but the scholarship i won as a national merit scholar was $500/year for 4 years, a drop in the bucket of $20k+ tuition/year.

^finalist??  I got national merit but didnt get semi/finalist because there were 32 other kids at shaker in my class (06) that made national merit and i knew i wasnt going to waste my time and money to compete for it.  (lazy i know)

As for Shaker, born and raised.  Taxes are rediculous to be sure.  (14k a year on a 500k house aprox.) The one thing I will treasure forever was the multicultural aspect.  I found that out when I went to Ohio State and tried to hang out with white people and black people together (yellow, blue green too!) and they were very uneasy.  I had alot of my friends from shaker visit me at ohio state and some of my white friends there would be very guarded and hesitant as if my friends were inherintly different from them.  Needless to say I think I have changed some minds and am working on others.  Friends from Hough to Hunting Valley and keeping the circle expanding!

06?  Lad!  and yes the taxes are ridiculous.

I too experienced that inherent issue at OSU.

National Merit?  Humm.....

Thats my favorite quote so far on urban ohio.  Thought I would share that.

Oh MTS I hope you are not correcting people's grammar and spelling.  You are one of the worst offenders when it comes to plural vs. possessive (e.g. "there were many cat's" instead of "there were many cats"), I just never call you on it.  :-)

Man that brought back memories.  As much as I hated Shaker, the city and the school, it did push you to be a good student.
