July 24, 200816 yr M-F 11am - 6:30pm The lines can be insane at lunch. But I've never had anything (Cleveland area) that's really come close... And I'd throw it up against any pizza I'd been told to taste in NY during my time there. I think those hours eliminate it from being "the best place to get pizza". If Lola still had the same great food but it had sh!tty service, is it still the best restaurant in town? No. i thought we were judging on quality of pizza...
July 24, 200816 yr For the east side, Geraci's and Dewey's are good, but IMO Marotta's and Stone Oven both top them. Marotta's is more traditional with great tasting sauce and high-quality dough, but has recently gone up in price (like 50%). Stone Oven is a very thick pizza with a lot of variety of toppings and amazing bread, but is only available at lunch. Also, I haven't tried Pizza Bogo yet, but I've heard good things about them.
July 24, 200816 yr mrnyc - they repainted yala's a couple of years ago when they shrunk the waiting room down to make room for a new cooler in the kitchen - and yes I remember the painting of "Mario" on the wall but I guess I didn't realize it was gone. Never had a Five Alarm Pizza, but I'll have to try that. Lorain has probably 10 different local pizza places, and thankfully few chains have been successful there. CiCi's didn't even last a year when they opened in town. Props also to Giovanni's in South Lorain for their large deep dish that probably weighs 3 pounds.
July 24, 200816 yr Mama Santa's and Valentino's in Little Italy (Cleveland) I'm sorry Mama Santa's just hasn't been the same since the old pizza chef retired in the early 2000s
July 24, 200816 yr Mama Santa's and Valentino's in Little Italy (Cleveland) I'm sorry Mama Santa's just hasn't been the same since the old pizza chef retired in the early 2000s Yeah, but it's still good and dirt cheap. I'd take it over chain pizza any day. Oh, and Valentino's has been run by different people the last couple of years too, but it also tastes close to what it used to.

I'd take it over chain pizza any day. Oh, and Valentino's has been run by different people the last couple of years too, but it also tastes close to what it used to. Speaking of dirt cheap, I miss the old Captain Tony's on Coventry. There used to be a CWRU discount, something like a large one topping w/ delivery for 7 bucks.
July 24, 200816 yr Does the Shaker Square location give a CWRU discount? I'm too old now to actually answer that question, but I know the SS one still delivers to Case.
July 24, 200816 yr yes, mrnyc, Lombardi's is good; also try the John's branch in the Theater District. It's a bit touristy, to say the least, but it's in an old church with a large stained glass skylight in the ceiling and a large balcony section. Going back downtown, there's a great new new place on 14th St. bet. 1st & 2nd Aves called Artichoke Basille's--although it's a real hole-in-the-wall and always a line! http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/
July 24, 200816 yr There was this pizza place in Bexley that was pretty good I went to (Rubio's or something?). Rubino's. When I lived around there they were the only place we ever ordered from. My favorite is the Cameo in Sandusky (or maybe Chet & Matt's...everyone says they're the same but I still choose the Cameo for the better dining experience). I was raised on that stuff and try to get there whenever I'm in town.
July 26, 200816 yr Pomodori's in Cincy is my favorite by far (locally)... They claim to be Ohio's first wood oven baked pizza (ColDay disagrees) ... ... and CincyImages tipped me to Lombardi's in NY ... amazing stuff!! ... all in all, my favorite of all time has to be Chi-Town's original pizza pie.
July 26, 200816 yr Since we have expanded to places outside of Ohio---my favorite place to have pizza is Gino's of Far East Chicago. Great deep dish pizza!!!!
July 27, 200816 yr Since there seems to be a lack of representation from NWO, I am going to put forward J & G Pizza Palace in Sylvania (Toledo sub). It is family owned/operated and located on Main Street in downtown Sylvania. Excellent thin crust, round, but square cut pizza. They also have awesome gyro's and greek salads. The place is small and they do a huge carry out business, so it can take up to an hour to get a table at prime time. Just thinking about the place is making me want to take a trip home to T-town ASAP!
July 28, 200816 yr I must say reino's in tiffin ohio will kick the crap of any other place! for real im not joking. one bit and youll be hooked
July 30, 200816 yr Due to the air of haughtiness this site has seemed to developed, I feel a little hesitant to mention that I love Larosas' traditional crust pizzas. I know a lot of Cincinnati transplants who, upon returning returning for a visit, have to hit Greaters, Skyline, and Larosas before their visit is complete. So there must be something there. I know that there are Larosas everywhere in Cincy and it is not considered to be an exclusive "designer" pie, but to me it has a unique flavor and is a big part of what Cincy is, not to showy but damn good and something to be proud of.
July 30, 200816 yr Delisi's in Medford, New Jersey... Havent tried pizza in NE Ohio yet. To be honest, I'm kind of afraid to. Dont get me wrong. I grew up on Ohio pizza, not the chains but small places. Then I came to New Jersey/Philly and fell in love with 'real' pizza. It's not like Chicago, it's not like New York. It's just New Jersey pizza and I'm going to miss it when we move I've never heard of anyone actually missing Jersey.. haha I totally miss Jersey. I liked New Jersey better than New York.
July 30, 200816 yr Best delivery pizza in Cleveland is Nunzio's. Their focaccia is out of this world. Their Italian-style hot-and-mild is also fantastic. I do love both Valentino's and Vincenza's though.

July 30, 200816 yr I like Marcella's on York and Pleasant Valley in Parma. I like Capri on Bagley in Middleburg. I like Vincenza's downtown. I love Mama Santos in Little Italy I am kind of the fan of thin crust pizza that is either crispy or flimsy. I hate a doughy pizza.
July 30, 200816 yr Briar Hill Pizza in Youngstown -- only pizza I've ever had that is close to my Italian grandmother's homemade...
July 30, 200816 yr Cafe Napalitano on High Street in downtown Columbus. It's NOT so-called Columbus-style pizza (extra-thin crust, cut in a grid). Plus, Palmo (the pop in this mom-and-pop-and-kids operation) was born in Italy. He came here at age 2, but still ...
July 30, 200816 yr ^^ My girlfriend is for Warren and she is always talking about how great Briar Hill pizza. I have yet to have it though.

Plus, Palmo (the pop in this mom-and-pop-and-kids operation) was born in Italy. He came here at age 2, but still ... Ok, "Columbus style pizza" is a bit of a stretch, but I'll give it to you. Thin crust cut in a grid is a pretty common pizza mostly wherever you go. But again, I have no proof that didn't start in Columbus.
July 30, 200816 yr probably a nod to donato's which started in columbus, as they jammed thin crust grid cuts down the nations throat. Personally I think Donato's pizza belongs at the bottom of a bird cage.
July 30, 200816 yr I don't know that what people in Columbus call "Columbus-style" originated in Columbus, but I agree with McCleveland that Donato's belongs in the birdcage.
July 30, 200816 yr OK ive tried several of the cleveland area suggestions on this page and one by one i was expecting great pizza and good quality. Ive come to the conclussion my taste buds are far more advanced then everyone who is posting on this page....lol The pizza has been much better then every chain ive ever had and alot of them were worth ordering again, but if this is the best pizza cleveland has got then i guess ill have to take a drive down to tiffin once in a while and get my fix on reino's pizza. Maybe Im too picky and Im looking for what i grew up on and Im not having any luck :(
July 30, 200816 yr A co-worker of mine back in Wooster used to talk about Youngstown's Brier Hill pizza all the time... what's the secret?
July 30, 200816 yr ^Main thing with the Briar Hill pizza, there's no melted shredded cheese layer but grated Romano cheese instead. The crust is really good, not too thin, not too thick and a bit crispy around the edges with plenty of olive oil. It's a different taste anyway, again a taste that I associate with a homemade recipe in my family. It may not float everyone's boat but I would recommend trying it sometime if you get a chance. I pick some up about once a year if I'm lucky...
July 31, 200816 yr Nunzios is good? really? I never would have guessed this. I kind of thought it was pit. Yes, I judged by the location. What is the "hot and mild" ? I just looked on line and did not see a description
July 31, 200816 yr Haha worst pizza (but best drunk) = Guys on Coventry. it was a good run there until the counter staff would stop you from buying 10 slices and pissing off everyone in the line behind you (instead of waiting to order a whole pizza)
August 3, 200816 yr One Banana Two Banana Three Banana Joe, the pizza you're referring to, no one seemes to know. However the sauce sounds good...real chunky you say? Or were you referring to yourself?
August 4, 200816 yr One Banana Two Banana Three Banana Joe, the pizza you're referring to, no one seemes to know. However the sauce sounds good...real chunky you say? Or were you referring to yourself? mr. rockandroller knows it, he went to college in tiffin and said it's nothing special, so to each his own I guess.

Warning: they do not accept credit card payments for downtown delivery (found out the hard way last weekend). They are open until 3:30am on weekends (not sure about weekdays).

I just looked on line and did not see a description Oh yes. It is fantastic. I had never seen the place until the other day when I drove by on my way to a friend's house, and I would have assumed the same thing. Before that we had a delivery-only relationship. The mild and hot has a mix of italian peppers on it. The focaccia is called the Aglio e Olio.
August 6, 200816 yr fresh pizza porn from last week! this is yala's pizza in lorain   half sausage/green pepper/onion & half pepperoni/mushroom/onion i had some marion's in dayton too, no question ohio has some mighty tasty pizza!
August 8, 200816 yr This probably isn't even worth mentioning, but I bought a Domino's pizza after I rode the bike trail last night - for some reason my blood sugar was probably spiking low and I was famished, so my judgement was impaired. ;) I got a thin crust with pep. It was probably the first Dominos I had in 10+ years. OH MY GOD. You talk about crappy, tasteless shingles! Domino's thin crust is as though they made the pizza on a bed of saltine crackers. When I got it home I dumped salt and red flake pepper on it, and it didn't make a damned bit of difference. I am in the Dayton area and Ron's (formerly of Centerville, now closed, and has a location in Springboro that is is *NEVER* open when we need it) has been a fave in the past.
August 9, 200816 yr Rons was my favorite and it is sorley missed as it delivered, and actually did deliver, and not lose the order like some other local pizza places (ahem Centerville Pizza ---tonight---totally screwed up and lied about it) . I've had a lot less pizza since Rons closed their Cville place. They actually had good juicy pizza...good taste, thinner crust. The Rons that is open is the one in Miamisburg, kittycorner Main fromr the Market House. This is probably the best pizza in Dayton (IMHO), but Oregon Express has good pizza too (oddly enough this is bar food, but its pretty good).
August 9, 200816 yr Ok. I think they have one other location, on 741 near Alex-Bell. That one freaky pothead guy with dreadlocks at Ron's Centerville made great pizza. :) How is Centerville Pizza's product, notwithstanding your bad experience?

They had a Briar Hill festival for a couple of years, I am not sure if they still have it or not. Which pizza place do you get it from in Y-town?

I know they make it @ a Catholic church in Hubbard--the old folks do it on Fridays and young people aren't stepping in to take over, it's sad. My fave is always Sunrise Inn in Warren. Delicious.
