August 16, 200816 yr ^Main thing with the Briar Hill pizza, there's no melted shredded cheese layer but grated Romano cheese instead. The crust is really good, not too thin, not too thick and a bit crispy around the edges with plenty of olive oil. It's a different taste anyway, again a taste that I associate with a homemade recipe in my family. It may not float everyone's boat but I would recommend trying it sometime if you get a chance. I pick some up about once a year if I'm lucky... My grandpa was from the Briar Hill neighborhood and they would always make the Briar Hill pizza with grated cheese and green peppers cut into rings. They had a Briar Hill festival for a couple of years, I am not sure if they still have it or not. Which pizza place do you get it from in Y-town? The place is actually called Briar (or is it Brier?) Hill Pizza on Meridian Rd. My understanding is that it is a kind of pizza, not a pizza place. I know they make it @ a Catholic church in Hubbard--the old folks do it on Fridays and young people aren't stepping in to take over, it's sad. My fave is always Sunrise Inn in Warren. Delicious. Yes, it's a kind of pizza but there's also a place that opened with that name in Y-Town, I think it's been open for at least 4 or 5 years but I could be wrong.
August 19, 200816 yr that sounds like what is also known as a thin sicilian "nonna" or "grandma" slice.
September 2, 200816 yr Best delivery pizza in Cleveland is Nunzio's. Their focaccia is out of this world. Their Italian-style hot-and-mild is also fantastic. I do love both Valentino's and Vincenza's though. Ooo! They deliver downtown! And until late too! Thanks for the tip! Warning: they do not accept credit card payments for downtown delivery (found out the hard way last weekend). They are open until 3:30am on weekends (not sure about weekdays). Do they deliver to the west side -- Battery Park area? So far all I can find to deliver here is Pizza Hut.
September 2, 200816 yr The best near me is Marottas on Lee in Cleveland Heights but for sure very pricey. My all time favorite is in my home town of Canton, Pizza Oven, very unique sauce and dough, different from almost all other pizza's I have had but always great. Has anyone had Pizza from the place in Parma that Drew Cary likes so much? I do not know the name off hand but apparently he gets it shipped to California on occasion.
September 2, 200816 yr ^^ Nunzio's does indeed deliver to Battery Park. We ordered from them a few weeks ago. Delivery in under 25 minutes and it was quite tasty.
September 2, 200816 yr nuzios is closer to Battery Park than downtown. You might also try Pizza and Calzone Co. in the Flats
September 4, 200816 yr Rotolo's on 5th Avenue in Grandview. Great sauce and toppings. Any place that still has Momma making the sauce has to be great.

I think he gets it from Antonio's. It's not bad. It is kind of a staple in Parma as there is one on Ridge and another on Chevy.

Yes i think they still have the Brier Hill Festival in Youngstown. There is a ton of great pizza here in the Warren/Youngstown area. I had Sunrise a couple of weeks ago for the first time in years and it was outstanding. I also like Brother's Pizza and Pizza Joe's, which is a chain......their veggie is the best. I've also heard that Avalon Garden's Brier Hill is outstanding, but i haven't tried it yet. From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brier_Hill "The Pizza The neighborhood was the birthplace of "Brier Hill Pizza," which is a humble, homestyle pizza-- with its origins in the Basilicata region of Italy -- made with a generous amount of thick Sunday sauce, bell peppers and romano cheese rather than the usual mozzarella. It is un piatto tipico* of Youngstown; one of several dishes the area prides itself on, as New Yorkers do so of their thin-crust slices of foldable Pizza Margherita.[10] The most authentic pizza shoppes to purchase Brier Hill Pizza are: * The Avalon Gardens (on Belmont Avenue, just east of Brier Hill) * St. Anthony's Church (on Turin Avenue, in Brier Hill) ... Fridays only * The annual Brier Hill Fest (in August) The Sunrise Inn restaurant (in nearby Warren, Ohio) is also known for its Brier Hill Pizza. * piatto tipico is the Italian term for "typical local dish." Italian Wedding Soup from Sunrise Some Sunrise Pizza, not exact Brier Hill (it has peppers), but w/pepperoni Here's a Brier Hill Pizza w/pepperoni and peppers.......Yummy! BTW, for all you Columbus people...............Warren's Sunrise Inn now has a location in Columbus where you can have some Brier Hill. They'll even FedEx you some pizza if you are out of the area. :) http://www.sunriseinnexpress.com/pizza.php
March 2, 200916 yr I just recently tried Geraci's in South Euclid/University Heights area and I have to say that it is my new favorite pizza in Greater Cleveland. No gimmicks, just the best quality ingredients, properly put together right.
March 14, 200916 yr Pizza Grand Prix III - Review and Results By CMH Gourmand | March 8, 2009 10:39pm The Pizza Grand Prix III had a great turnout: 60 plus people came to dine on a plethora of pizza pies. A few pizzas may have have been missed coming through the door at the beginning. I am not sure how many Bono Pizzas arrived. Few pizzas lingered around for long. My official count was 50 pizzas from 28 places. Best of Gran Prix Winner: Dewey’s Buffalo Chicken Runner Up: High Beck Smokehouse Combo Best Homemade Winner: Rocketmaster Mike’s Bacon Baccahanalia Best Topping Combo Winner: Mama Mimi’s BBQ Bacon Runner Up: Surly Girl Blue Cheese Cranberry Best Vegetarian Winner: Northstar High Street Veggie MORE: http://www.columbusunderground.com/pizza-grand-prix-iii-review-and-results
April 18, 20223 yr it's only been 13 years since anyone posted here. Check out Bada Bing Pizza in Painesville if you're passing through. This place, in a little free-standing building in what is still, of course, a less-than-bustling downtown, is almost in the exact spot where the long-gone Angela's Pizza once stood, a relic that dated back to the 1940's, and the only place in town even in the 60's to get pizza (of dubious authenticity despite the fact that Painesville has had a decent sized Italian population going back over a century), and back when the next door (now demolished) Lake Theater once drew crowds of people. http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/
May 26, 20223 yr since we moved to staten island we have been in italian food and pizza heaven. the island has tons of freakin italian-americanos and they have high standards for this food, so its no surprize. there are all kinds of styles, but also a staten island style of pizza. its a thin crust bar pie. if you ride the staten island ferry over do not hesitate to hop on the subway right below the ferry station and go hit up lee's tavern. its right next to the dongan hills train station stop. get a red clam bar pie.
