Posted July 23, 200816 yr Alrighty, a little later than I'd planned but here are some shots from the Taste of Tremont. Heading up West 14th - yes, we walked. Yes it was humid: Peek-a-boo at Lemko Hall: Here we are on Professor Street, the main drag of the festival: I like this toucan MUCH better then that Fruit Loops twit: Nice detail on St. John Cantius church - and they served up equally divine pierogies :-) Like I said, it was a hot day so into Edisons for a drink: Bass on tap :-D $4 for a small plastic cup :-P Over to the Flying Monkey, I've been busted by a forumer and her auxiliary! After running into some friends we made our way back up Professor: These nice people brought their moose dog: Fra-gee-lay: Empanadas... *drooooooool* * Dish Tremont's stand next to Lolita (originally Lola with Iron Chef Michael Symon for those who don't know): So many consonants! I've always liked that cute little bank building: Okay, it was hot and humid - how do people wear skinny jeans and not drop dead of heatstroke? :? What a smart marketing ploy. Get it? Nyuk, nyuk: Banyan Tree - one of Cleveland's best boutique stores: Alright, let's head over to the beer garden: Apparently some of the uptight and/or in need of extra fiber in their diet locals are "outraged" over this scandalous painting  Looks like these barricades have been used recently ;-) Patiently waiting in the way-too-long beer line: We decided it wasn't worth a second beer and the extra hour it would have taken to get it so off we went: Heading back home through the 'hood: Civilization coffeeshop had a nice crowd: And signing off from one of Tremont's landmark churches - Pilgrim Congregational (United Church of Christ): clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
July 23, 200816 yr Great pics MD. Note: You should have hit the girl in the skinny jeans. I just don't get those things! Then you should have bashed the couple with the cute dog for their hideous footwear! The dog was beautiful. Thats the kind of puppy I want!
July 23, 200816 yr Wow, looks like a great crowd. Was the beer garden grossly understaffed or was it just way too popular?
July 23, 200816 yr Things that were wrong with the beer garden: 1. In previous years (not sure who ran it), they had two to three 60" tables set up, giving the servers plenty of room to work and the line moved quicker because people could step up to whoever was available. This year, they had ONE. 2. In previous years, they had at least four to five people running it. This year, they had TWO. 3. In previous years, the servers served. This year, the servers also occasionally stopped what they were doing for some stupid spin-the-wheel promotion for Magic Hat #9 (apricot ale), AND to announce "take your cup to Tremont Tap House for a discount!". Did I mention that no one really heard them because of the band playing 20 feet away? I understand that they need to drum up business but for f#ck's sake, don't disable a server to do that when you ONLY HAVE TWO to begin with! :whip: Then again, as much as I love and adore the Tap House - service is NOT their strong point - yet. It won't keep me away, but I definitely hope they used this year as a learning experience. clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
July 23, 200816 yr "Might be"? It's incredibly easy: 1. Spot cute gal/guy. 2. Get in line at same food stand. 3. Order something that they don't. 4. Ask them how they like what they ordered. 5. Continue conversation. 6. Continue conversation over drinks. 6. Set date to further continue conversation. :-D clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
July 23, 200816 yr Okay, it was hot and humid - how do people wear skinny jeans and not drop dead of heatstroke? :? I actually went to high school with this kid and haven't talked to him in about six years. Crazy small world.

July 24, 200816 yr Great set. Did you go inside of the Polish Legion Hall? I heard that it was open to the public for the first time in over 50 years for TOT. I couldn't bring myself to do anything Sunday, else I would have biked over. Looks like an excellent turnout, which is great for the neighborhood and city.
July 24, 200816 yr Thanks! "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
July 24, 200816 yr "Great set. Did you go inside of the Polish Legion Hall? I heard that it was open to the public for the first time in over 50 years for TOT." I did - as far as an architecturally remarkable space, not so much. As a piece of history and a genuine "old guys club" joint, very cool. clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram

July 24, 200816 yr Looks like a fun neighborhood. I need to go check it out one of these days. Okay, it was hot and humid - how do people wear skinny jeans and not drop dead of heatstroke? :? I actually went to high school with this kid and haven't talked to him in about six years. Crazy small world. And after seeing him in that pic, you should continue that practice! Now that's just mean...and funny! Me? Like Rob I'm sweet and innocent. Queens in skinny jeans are just evil! They should be called what they are - Women's jeans. Probably ultra-low waist, at that. D@mn commies! Is there/was there at one time a college of some sort nearby? (Professor/Literary streets).
July 24, 200816 yr Taste of Tremont looks like a fun event, and Tremont just keeps looking better and better.
July 24, 200816 yr Now now guys, I'm sure Mr. SkinnyJeans is a nice person - I just thought it was waaaaaay too warm and humid that day. David, to answer your question - from restoretremont.com: "History Originally settled by Eastern Europeans, Appalachians, Greeks, Polish and African-Americans, Tremont is one of Cleveland’s oldest neighborhoods with architectural gems evoking its rich cultural heritage. Tremont was once named University Heights in tribute to the hosting of the city’s first institution of higher learning - Cleveland University - which operated in the neighborhood from 1851 to 1853. The current street names “Professor,” “College,” “University” and “Literary” are remnants of this period. The name of the neighborhood was changed later to Lincoln Heights to commemorate the area’s role as the site of two Union Army camps during the Civil War. The small town character fostered by the isolation created by the development of the interstates along with the unique mix of architectural styles and proximity to Downtown, has spurred a renewed interest in urban living in the neighborhood." clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
July 24, 200816 yr David, there was a short-lived college, Cleveland University, located in Tremont in the 1850's. It was the first college in Cleveland. It only lasted a for few years, though the street names and the building remain. The building is now a part of the Gospel Press complex. One of the neighorhood's alternate names was University Heights (not to be confused with the current suburb). It was also later known as Lincoln Heights because of a Civil War encampment located there.
July 24, 200816 yr David, to answer your question - from restoretremont.com: Does anyone know why there's a Tremont ArtWalk and a Tremont Art Hop? Tremont Art Hop is a product of the Restore Tremont group, which I thought was supported by businesses and the "New" Tremont (group in favor of gentrification). That true?
July 24, 200816 yr Not sure why there were two, but I do remember reading somewhere that the Hop and the Walk have merged.
July 24, 200816 yr his name looks like quite a mouthful, but really it's not so bad. you just say, "ka-SHOE-sko." he was a great if relatively unknown american-polish hero. dig some wiki: Andrzej Tadeusz Bonawentura Kościuszko ([taˈdeuʃ koɕˈʨuʃko] (help·info); 1746 – 1817) was a Polish, American, Belarusian and Lithuanian national hero and general. He led the Kościuszko Uprising (1794) against Imperial Russia. Prior to leading the 1794 Uprising, he had fought in the American Revolutionary War as a Colonel in the Continental Army. In 1783, in recognition of his dedicated service, he had been brevetted by the Continental Congress to the rank of Brigadier General, and that same year he had become a naturalized citizen of the United States. Thomas Jefferson called Kościuszko "as pure a son of liberty as I have ever known." Few know that the abolitionist ideas Kościuszko absorbed in Paris and the United States influenced his passion to eliminate serfdom in his homeland. But the exchange worked both ways. After the Revolution Kościuszko urged the Patriots to fulfill the promise of their doctrine of unalienable birthrights by ending slavery in the U.S. His plea went unheard, however. For his efforts in favor of African Americans Mikael Dziewanowski recognized him as a "pioneer of emancipation and a spokesman for racial democracy and justice in eighteenth-century America." There are several Anglicized spellings for his name, the most frequently-used being Thaddeus Kosciusko, though the full "Andrew Thaddeus Bonaventure Kosciusko" also appears in some texts. In Lithuanian, his name is spelled Tadas Kosciuška or Tadeušas Kosciuška. In Belarusian, it is Тадэвуш Касцюшка (Tadevuš Kaściuška). much more here -- he had quite a life! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tadeusz_Ko%C5%9Bciuszko **** very nice pics too mayday. looks like a fun, neighborly event.
July 24, 200816 yr Actually, it's more like "kosh-chu-shko" I'm Polish. Don't butcher my language. :)

July 24, 200816 yr The second county to the west of Allen County, Indiana (where Fort Wayne is located) is Kosciusko County. Not surprisingly, its county seat is Warsaw (approx. 14K population). Ironically, among the county's 74,000 residents there's no significant Polish-American presence, and only .6 percent of the residents are Black or African-American.
July 24, 200816 yr Actually, it's more like "kosh-chu-shko" I'm Polish. Don't butcher my language. :) sorry, but i'll stand by that. while you are correct no one in the 21st century has the extra spare time to say it your way. we all got lives!!!

July 24, 200816 yr jpop, I tried pronouncing it like you said, and it didn't seem to work. I'll try later this evening after four a beer and see if that helps. clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram

July 24, 200816 yr jpop, I tried pronouncing it like you said, and it didn't seem to work. I'll try later this evening after four a beer and see if that helps. Haha .. doubtful. It might make it worse. Do your parents speak or is did you learn from your grandparents? Both. My parents and my grandparents are all from Poland. Most of my family is, in fact. I'm first generation American, along with my sisters.

July 25, 200816 yr Looks like a great event and the neighborhood looks like a less yuppie-ish version of the Short North. Even with the yuppies, I love it.
July 25, 200816 yr The skinny jeans are bad indeed. The soviet bag takes the cake for me thought. It's like screaming out to everyone, "Look, I'm hip!!!" Anywho... great pics! I haven't seen Tremont pics in quite a while. Looks very nice.

What’s funny about those skinny jeans is that even skinny twenty year-olds who are in super good shape (presumably the ideal candidate to pull off this look) look stupid in them. What sadistic cabal of fashion “designers” decided to inflict this trend on the hapless (and increasingly overweight) American public?? http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/

I know they're a big thing at Uniqlo (the Japanese "GAP"...well, you know how skinny they are). I can still, if I'm lucky, get into the so-called "slim" jeans--hmmm...maybe if I can get my BMI (hey, wouldn't that be a good survey question?) of 25 (the lowest number--on the borderline--for being in the overweight category) down a little...then again, I'm a hundred years old... http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/

I read them then, and I hate even more now that other labels/brands continued the trend. I know it was "tired" when rappers started wearing them. Those skinny heifers and their damn jeans!
