Posted August 3, 200816 yr If you go to Hicksville, you might as well hit up Antwerp. NW Ohio is overrun with Subways
August 3, 200816 yr I've been to Antwerp, but I didn't stay long because the excitement was too much for me. Maybe I didn't get a fair impression, though; I went to attend a funeral. I suspect most of what goes on there isn't that exciting.
August 3, 200816 yr It certainly isn't anything like its namesake. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
August 3, 200816 yr Ink, not much I can say about Antwerp except it must have had better days 100 years ago. Now it looks like a typical tired little farming community of the type found across the Midwest from Nebraska to Pennsylvania, Ohio included, of course. Small towns of this type stuggle to stay alive as many of the younger generation take off for bigger cities and greener pastures. It looks like the folks in Antwerp are doing the best they can with what they have and the town does look clean in the photos. Having said that, I can't think of any special reason to make a trip there unless it would be for business purposes.
August 3, 200816 yr haha.......Antwerp......we drive through there when going to visit family in Indiana.......at least they have (had?) an A&W drive-in
August 3, 200816 yr It certainly isn't anything like its namesake. I thought the name might have its origin in the ancestral home of the town's founders, but it's not so. The first settlers came in 1827, and the town was platted in 1841. The five men who founded the town wanted to give it a name that wasn't duplicated by any other American place. They went through a postal guide and found Antwerp, Belgium. They didn't know of any other towns by that name, so they chose that one. The Wabash-Erie Canal passed through Antwerp. The main route through there now is US 24, and is assume that the Fort-to-Port Highway will bypass it altogether. I think the nearest city is Fort Wayne, maybe 20 miles away, and I worked with a couple of people who commuted from there.
