August 6, 200816 yr Cabbage & noodles is a new one on me. Looks mighty good, though! New one for me as well. That is unvelievable to me. You are saying you never ate cabbage and noodles??? Maybe it is just a Catholic religious thing as I have eaten taht every Friday of my life with Perogi's or Fish. And not only me, but any of my family and friends have done the same thing. They are a staple at fish frys at my church during lent. I am reallly blown away by this. Not that I am mad at you guys or dissappointed, I just thought cabbage and noodles were like french fries or potato chip.

I just thought everyone still ate that on Fridays. Oh well, no bigee, I won't harp on it forever. I was just suprised.
August 6, 200816 yr Cabbage & noodles sounds pretty good to me. I'm remembering the homemade sauerkraut & dumplings that my German grandma used to make. We often had that with pork roast so tender it melted in your mouth. Anybody have a recipe?

I used to love wathcing the dough drip into the boiling water and solidify on contact. When i was a kid, that was so cool.
August 6, 200816 yr My family was all Protestant, mostly of Swiss & German descent, with a lot of farmers in the mix. We ate pretty much anything that satisfied hunger, and our diet was heavy on red meat, poultry, potatoes, garden vegetables, and fruit pies or cobblers. Lard, real butter, whole milk and fresh cream were essentials for meal preparation.
August 6, 200816 yr is cabbage & noodles known as "haluski"? it's halushka in hungarian. just about the same thing. a popular pan-slavic dish.
August 6, 200816 yr That looks yummy! Don't forget to add some ham hocks to those greens MTS. Yes, you MUST pork in them there greens! No smoked turkey!
August 6, 200816 yr I suspect ham hocks might work with cabbage & noodles, too. Sometimes we had them with the sauerkraut & dumplings, and that was heaven on earth!

August 7, 200816 yr are you sure? i think you displaced your hate of great lakes fish and all things great lakes on us poor hungarians!
August 7, 200816 yr my best friend while growing up was Hungarian. His mother made a great pastry called balish (bay-lish)--I probably totally screwed up the spelling--but it was a little similar to Jewish Hamantaschen; though I never had the noodle & cabbage dish. PS. I think there's still one Hungarian restaurant in NYC in Yorkville on 2nd Ave. This used to be a big Hungarian (and German) neighborhood, and on any given day you'll find a group of cantankerous :x and boisterous older Hungarian guys hanging out in the Starbucks on 2nd & 81st. St. They tend to dominate the front window and seem to be there whenever I go in on the occasion I'm in the area. I guess they're part of the "local color." http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/
August 7, 200816 yr ^ ah yeah, the ny factor. like the russian community, the hungarian community is almost exclusively jewish in ny, which is quite the opposite of ne ohio, where they are mostly catholic or some protestant. so there are food variations, like for example the stuffed cabbage is sweet. i find that revolting, but i guess it depends on what you were raised with over there in hungary. regardless, the little hungarian restaurant food i ever did find ny over the years was always 100% uniformly awful. I think you two should break bread over Goulash. Now play nice. oh hush. we're just goofin around here. ok ok, for the record cdm does not hate hungarians or the great lakes!
August 11, 200816 yr Well, I do hate Lake Ontario. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
