I find it interesting that the SE side of PS has a Gateway District marquee (so it must be considered such) instead of Public Square.

FYI, in case you were wondering, source says that first apartments will be ready for move-in by Summer 2020.

There will be some big projects coming online this summer for leasing.  Really great to see.

I love what they have done to restore this gem.  My only wish is that the black granite street level facade was restored to it's original.  It has always felt off to the rest of the building's character

It appears that the first two floors were the only frosted ones before renovation.

Historically, IIRC all the floors had frosted windows.  When May Co., downsized and turn the upper floors into office space, they removed the the monogram "M" from the windows.

 

It would be a nice hat tip to the building if they keep the monogrammed windows.  I think it would type the past to the present.  I guess we'll have to see, what else is planned for the building.

I would personally hate having frosted windows if I lived there.

My wife and I were just discussing that. Looks cool but sucks you cannot look out your window.

I honestly keep checking to see what retailer is going in this space, IIRC there were some hints that some interesting and pleasant names on the potential list.

Love how every building, one by one has come back to life. Looking down Euclid at night is pretty awesome. All the buildings have their own unique lighting. 

Idk if it's just holdover from the past or if they plan to relight the overhang but the makings for it are there behind the glass panels (those are florescent bulbs in the first pic).

Each section of this type on the awning downtown used to contain a solid back panel of acrylic or glass.  The May Company logo was written in opaque white lettering across the panel so that it was backlit by those florescent lights.  I noticed in the past that they had all been painted over as black. One or more of them had also been reinserted backwards and looked very poor.

 

As I remember, it written in the same font as was over this photo of the "may company" store inside Parmatown. In my opinion, it was not the most elegant iteration of their logo.  I preferred (then as now) the "the MAY co." version found over the same entrance in Parmatown. The new look arrived with a 1980s remodel.

Hopefully between May Co. and Sherwin-Williams there is increased activity and attention on the square which might lead to some improvements.

I think this is the most impressive rehab in Cleveland history. What a beautiful building.

^Close call between the Schofield and the May Co, but yes, absolutely one of the best rehabs in CLE.

Would anyone else like to see those huge razor signs make a comeback downtown? I think a new vertical May Co. sign would look amazing. For whatever reason historic credits don't seem to apply to vintage signage.

Often times the historic standards for rehabilitation prohibit many of the types of signs that had historically been used.

there is a sort of electronic window tinting process buildings can have where the tint changes with the light and weather. 

 

you could get the old M back in the windows that way and it would only be visible at times during the day.

 

or i guess as a resident you could turn it off when you wanted to.

 

i am not saying that is a great idea or anything, it just occurred to me it could sort of be a compromise while reading this.

 

i had forgotten all about the M windows in the may co.

Funny that Bedrock should go to the trouble of identifying that historic photo as the Prospect Ave. facade, when it's actually the Ontario St facade. Most people can't recall that the May Co, had an entrance there, but I do. They were next door neighbors to The Bailey Co.

The lighting on the Prospect side of the building will be an extremely dramatic improvement. It will eliminate that dark stretch of Prospect between Ontario and E. 4th.

I'm so glad they are going with white lighting. The colored LEDs were nice when it was just a few buildings being lit up with them, but now it seems just about every other building downtown is completely illuminated with multicolor LEDs - its just looking too busy now in my opinion. White lighting like this will bring more attention to the details of the building, instead of covering them up with color.

I'm definitely a fan of razor signs, and rooftop signs, as well.  That particular one, however.....

Signage isn’t required because it doesn’t make sense to require signage for a private brand that is no longer present at the location. Imagine if May Co was still around but abandoned downtown Cleveland. Requiring their signage not only wouldn’t make sense, it would cause confusion that they actually did have a store there. 

I love how they have restored this historic building. The exterior lighting will only enhance the details.  I would love to see if the canopy could be restored back to it's 1954 photograph. The underside appears to have been white. It would help to soften it's menacing appearance I couldn't tell from the planning commission's submission what is entailed rather than implementing signage

Preleasing was supposed to start this month, but I haven’t heard a thing.  I don’t believe a website is even up yet?
