Hell, it's not like we're telling Louis Vuitton or Prada that they can't open a new flagship in the space, designed by a starchitect nonetheless, because it's too avant garde

I don't see that they should get any different treatment.

One of my favorite views of the May Company building. Such an incredible transformation.

Let there be LIGHT!   Unfortunately the clock wasn't lit up tonight, but wow, what a transformation!

If the market demands something besides this style of a restaurant, it'll come. Whatever store or restaurant or whatever you guys think deserves this spot over CR is obviously not ready or needed yet.

I do, however, agree that another restaurant is going to start over saturating that entire area.

A couple pics from CR... after I took these someone came over rather suspicious of the paprazzi.  I introduced myself and they were kind enough to take me on a little tour inside.  I didn't take any pictures inside because I got the feeling it annoyed him.  The place is MASSIVE.  I think it's probably the largest restaurant / entertainment venue outside of HOB downtown.  Many, many bars.  There's also a pretty cool mezzanine spot in the rear.  At any rate here are the pics I took:

1. Stonework going up (he said in another couple weeks they should be moving on to cosmetic stuff and the bulk of the construction will be done).

2. The mechanical bull goes underneath the blue soffit.

let's not loose sight of the fact that it's just a sign on a stick and a car on a pedestal. it can come down in 15min after the run of the restaurant. since it will already be built out as a restaurant, maybe that will make it easier for a local clevelander to take it over at some point.

I'm not one who opposes this place as seen by my previous posts.. but THANK GOD another mechanical bull is being installed.. I don't know how Cleveland made it this long with only one downtown..

Cleveland has a mechanical bull??

^There's one at Tequilla Ranch on W.6th.  An interesting place to visit (yes I've been there).

Isn't there one at Saddle Ridge also at Bkpk and Pearl?

A city's true greatness is measured by its number of mechanical bulls.

Then Dallas must be the greatest city on Earth.

I've never seen more construction workers hanging out eating lunch than the amount that were outside CR and Park Building.  There must haev been 100 people leaning against May Co.

Maybe it was falling down.

There's also one in the driveway of a very small house on Ridge Road, on the north east side  right after the Ridge Road/I-71 overpass. Its usually covered with a blue tarp, but when it gets windy out, the cover gets blown away.

True Story.

so can't you use some bricks or tires or something to hold the tarp down?

Um, back to the subject at hand, please. I apologize my role in moving this discussion off-topic.

Actually I believe this is where we were discussing CR... You must have been galivanting around the olympics.

By the way... Cadillac Ranch I hear is set to open October 10. (technically with a opening party October 9)

Chile' please.  I was working at the Olympics. :-P    anywhooo...I posted that link here, because FerrariEnzo couldn't remember which thread CR was being discussed in.  he he he

walking past during lunch - I noticed they have placed the "55 Caddy" on the top of the new entrance to this place.  In my architecturally-ignorant opinion - it looks awful.

Pictures?? :-D

do you really want to see it?... :|

I agree...it is Cleveland's architecturally-equivalent "pink flamingo on the front lawn" tacky

while it is better than having nothing there, having this on our city's doorstep in such a historically significant spot makes me cringe

do you really want to see it?... :|

Si!

It really is embarrassing.  The entire entry thing is such a silly, unneccesary... I don't know....  piece of sh\t.

do you really want to see it?... :|

I saw this at lunch today and it is hideous.

Im not against having Cadillac Ranch in this spot, but the car has got to go.

Ive seen the CR in Tempe and have heard some pretty wild stories about it from friends who have been there.

If anyone has pictures i think they should do the whole forum a favor by NOT posting them.

this is what cadillac ranch is... it was "may companied" as much as humanly possible.  as long as CR is there the cadillac on top of the faux terra cota pagoda isn't going anywhere...

I just know you took a picture.

yes, i did, but my camera with the pic on it is at home... i'll get it up sometime in the near future.

I guess I'll be the guy walking by vomiting at the sight of it this afternoon.

But it could at least have an OHIO license plate.  I know it's a chain, but that Texas plate just even adds to the not-fitting-in-with-its-surroundings/corporate feel.  It actually would feel like a decent compromise.

Not sure an Ohio license plate would make that thing any less offensive.

I saw it Saturday...it really is awful.

I'll send you my shoe cleaning bill.

This thing is tacky as all get out, but they didn't cause any permanent damage to the building putting it in, so I'm thankful for that.  I'm sure that Public Square, and all of us, will survive the incursion.

Murray Hill, why would they put an Ohio license plate on the Caddy at a Texas themed bar?

^People from Ohio go to Texas, right?

This was a requirement...  at any rate here's a couple pics for the rest of you.

Is the May Co building overhang going to stay like that?!

it'll get cleaned up a little but pretty much yes... it's been there for a long time.

Okay.

In the pics, it looks like it's crushing the car underneath. :(

WAIT    You people were complaining about a design that is not even complete.

It's not even COMPLETE!  This is just like people who complain that they are not going to like a renovation, when only 30% of the project is complete.

I don't see what the "issue" is based on the photos shown.

Wha-wha-whaaaat!  C'mon MTS, what could possibly be done with that to make it look good?  We're not talking about repainting a kitchen to liven it up or rearranging the furniture in a room here.  This thing looks so incredibly out of place I can't imagine that any amount of work could be done around it to make it look nice.

Don't get me wrong, I'm always glad to have another business downtown and something to bring more people and $$$ to the area.  But it doesn't change the fact that this is extremely ugly.

The lighting of the whole contraption could make it look ok.  I'm withholding judgement until I see the final product.

I will, too, I guess. With a HUUUUUUUUUUGE dollop of skepticism.

I'm actually excited about this restaurant/club/bar going in...HOWEVER - the car looks ridiculous.  The May Company awning is not visually appealing - it is run down, ragged and sits directly on top fo the car.

If the awning wasn't there, then maybe the car wouldn't look so ridiculous.  Without much air space between the ugly awning and the car - it doesn't fit in.

I was thinking that the car got put on top of the awning before I saw these pics.  I'm glad that the car has no impact on the overall structure of the building.  It could be easily removed later if the place goes belly-up.

OK, so I didn't quite vomit at the sight of it. At least its half hidden in the shadow of that overhang. For some reason I was picturing the car on top of the overhang. That would have been a lot worse.

And even if it is only half done, it looks like its going to be pretty bad.

"The May Company awning is not visually appealing - it is run down, ragged and sits directly on top fo the car."

Yeah I noticed that as well, looks like its being compacted in a dump.

Yeah, that license plate thing bugs me.. try to localize it a BIT.. hell, even Applebees does..

MTS, you are way off on this.  That thing does, and WILL continue suck for the foreseeable future.  There is no question about it.

Lets try to look at the bright side of this.  There are plenty of people who go to indians/cavs games and cant afford to eat at the likes of zocalo, lola, etc.  This restaurant is filling an empty abandoned building and cleaning up the public square area while gaining tax revenue.  The car is a little tacky, but I would take it any day over what was there before....homeless people sitting under an abandoned building.
