May 24, 20187 yr I think the future mixed use is the vacant office building on Ontario next to the garage

May 24, 20187 yr Michelle Jarboe mjarboe[/member] 37m37 minutes ago #CLE Landmarks Commission unanimously approved May Co. renovation plans this morning, with conditions that they’d like to see the lighting and signage plans when they’re more developed. Targeted opening date: June 2020. EDIT: With Geis involved, this project is likely to progress quickly. May 24, 20187 yr At the end video it shows a picture of all the properties Gilbert owns in Detroit, looks like he owns 3/4ths of the city...
May 24, 20187 yr Michelle Jarboe 13m13 minutes ago Details on @BedrockDetroit's May Co. renovations in downtown #CLE, which will involve replacing 1,050 pieces of terra cotta - and could include a rooftop restaurant of some sort: http://realestate.cleveland.com/realestate-news/2018/05/landmarks_commission_oks_may_c.html EDIT: in regards to questions posed earlier in this thread about the building at 2025 Ontario, here is a paragraph from the article... The May Co. project does not include the adjoining, empty building at 2025 Ontario St., which was part of the historic department-store complex. Bedrock also owns that building, but Till said the company wants to get through the bigger May Co. makeover first. Eventually, 2025 Ontario could become office or residential space, with retail on the first floor, he said. June 29, 20186 yr Really exciting to see this ol girl come back to life. I never noticed before, but the windows are frosted with the May Co logo. She's a beaut!
June 30, 20186 yr The posts on the top of the facade were once lit on top as well, would be great to get those and the clock up and running again
June 30, 20186 yr What is the time frame to get the outside of the building fixed up? Can they please do something about the billboard frame on the top of the building...
July 3, 20186 yr The posts on the top of the facade were once lit on top as well, would be great to get those and the clock up and running again The plan is to have the clock reinstated and operational and the posts operating as well. The lighting plan was conceptually reviewed and will return to the Landmarks Commission for final approval.
July 11, 20186 yr Hey look, it's another construction crane over downtown -- OK, it's not a tower crane, but it is lifting construction materials up to the roof and upper floors of the May Company from the less-busy Prospect side... September 10, 20186 yr Small detail that I’ve been wondering about. I tried to do a search, but didn’t pull anything up. Are they going to try to save the historic windows with the M on them? I love the frosted company logo on the windows and hope that it’s a detail kept throughout.
September 10, 20186 yr I believe they are keeping it on part of the floors. Either the upper or lower floors will retain the frostedM- I can’t remember which now. The balance will be replaced with new windows.
September 10, 20186 yr Side note- does anyone know what exactly they are doing to the parking garage? Renovation wise what is the ultimate product supposed to look like?
September 10, 20186 yr Accoridng to this article on Crain’s floors two through five of the interior of the building will be parking and subsequent floors will be an atrium for apartments. I think that’s still the latest. I guess that the frosted glass windows will be consolidated to the lower floors. Better than nothing, but not ideal. http://realestate.cleveland.com/realestate-news/2018/05/landmarks_commission_oks_may_c.html
September 10, 20186 yr Parking is only in the interior, bothProspect and Euclid facades will be flanked with units
September 10, 20186 yr mrclifton88[/member] Are you referring to the parking garage that has Tilted Kilt on the ground floor? If so, and I may be wrong, but I don't think anything is happening with that. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
September 11, 20186 yr Yes, the Tilted Kilt garage. I believe it is currently under renovation. I believe it is partially covered with scaffolding and there is active work happening simultaneously with the May Co. Building itself. Actually you can see work being done in the photos above.
September 11, 20186 yr After parking in that garage for the last year and seeing the work, it seems they are just restoring the access to the May Co building and removing the hazards that exist. They have a long way to go still.

The scaffolding on the outside of the garage came down a couple weeks ago. But they're definitely still working inside the garage.
September 11, 20186 yr The tilted kilt parking garage exterior was repaired and repainted (it had been disgusting covered in rust and cracking everywhere). It looks much better now. There was also a discussion of the paninis moving into the tilted kilt location. I’m assuming that is because something is going on at the paninis building what with other places in that building closing.

The building, the Knights Center, 2132 East 9th St., continues to be owned by the Knights of Columbus, Cleveland Council #733, as it has been since at least 1950. From what I can tell, the building is not listed for sale and the owner has not advertised leasing any retail or office spaces in that building. September 13, 20186 yr Update from this morning.... mjarboe[/member] At @portofcleveland board meeting, where bond issues are on the table for the Church & State apartments in #CLE's Ohio City neighborhood and the May Co. building makeover downtown. #CRE mjarboe[/member] Ken Till from @BedrockDetroit at @portofcleveland board meeting talking about May Co. renovations. Still mentions revamp planning for the Avenue at Tower City and riverfront land behind it (for those who have asked about whether possible casino sale will impact the real estate). mjarboe[/member] Full-scale renovations at May Co. building should start in October, Ken Till says. Residents could arrive in June 2020. Just over 300 apartments, plus parking and street-level retail. @portofcleveland considering bond issue of up to $125M. mjarboe[/member] .@portofcleveland board signed off on resolution for $125M bond issue for May Co. project (taxable lease revenue bonds). September 25, 20186 yr Looks like the Tilted Kilt is closed (I was actually just in there last Friday!!!). It's dark in there are there are signs up on the windows saying "Coming Soon - Panini's". Looks like the rumors were true!!!
October 26, 20186 yr Panini's is now open. Here's a couple of pics from the Euclid side.... "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
November 3, 20186 yr The May Company facade will be just as impressive as The Schofield when its restoration is finally completed. Quite a remarkable renaissance downtown is experiencing with all the various projects being developed simultaneously. I've lived here for fifty years and have never seen anything like it.
December 20, 20186 yr Looks like some new windows have started going in on the Prospect side!!! I cant wait to see the windows on the lower floors.
December 28, 20186 yr The May company clock is lit up internally this morning. That’s a new sight Edited December 28, 20186 yr by CbusTransit
December 28, 20186 yr So the clock is actually there?? Pretty sure it was just a blank face not too long ago. We need pics! ?
December 30, 20186 yr I can say there is indeed a new clock in place, all nicely lit up! And "THE MAY COMPANY" sign atop the building is looking beautifully polished. Wonder if they plan to light up the letters? Unfortunately couldn't get a picture but I will try to take one tonight or tomorrow.
January 1, 20196 yr It's strange, it's going to take a long time getting used to seeing light in those windows.
January 1, 20196 yr The cost today to build this type of architecture is prohibitive. Very nice to see, especially in the city center!
January 4, 20196 yr Updates from a sunny day! Hard to see from the street what an incredible job they are doing. Beautiful restoration!
January 4, 20196 yr When this is finished, it will hopefully join the Schofield building as the most beautiful renovations the city has seen. This project looks stunning!

I was walking by today at lunch and didn't notice the windows, they're churning right along! Is the frosted May Co window a new one as well? If so, awesome! Also, I can't say I've ever noticed the neighboring building- sorry for any ignorance but is this part of the WT Grant Lofts? What a great looking building. Edited February 21, 20205 yr by GISguy

What a great looking building. Yes it is part of the WT complex. But it's actually the Cushing Building and there is nice writeup about it here. https://clevelandhistorical.org/items/show/814
January 6, 20196 yr It will also be good to see this bank of windows filled in properly, much like 668 before it.
January 10, 20196 yr there is a short article about Restoring The May Company Building’s White Terra Cotta Façade on the Boston Valley's Terra Cotta website under their "news/blog" tab. They are going to re-cast 1300 "stones" guess I should stop calling them bricks
