October 28, 20213 yr So obvious I’ve been following trends for bars and restaurant openings on here for a while. Probably 5 plus years at this point… I will say this has probably been the slowest year for new bars and restaurants openings in the Cincinnati region in quite some time. I thought a lot of this had to do with the labor shortages/inflation that is impacting food costs, etc…but I constantly see new announcements of new bars and restaurants opening in Columbus and Cleveland. Not saying that they may have not seen a slow down in their own right, but it’s been very impactful in the Cincinnati region for whatever reason. Normally I could list 20 plus news bars and restaurants in development that are slated for the otr and cbd area alone…this year I can barely count 5. Ive also noticed 3cdc commercial listings have stayed unleased for over a year now. The Columbia building still only has 1 tenant even though the project was completed almost 2 years ago at this point. Im sure things will rebound at some point…but I won’t lie it kind of stings when you hear about consistent new bars and restaurants openings in the other 2 c’s but here is a ghost town.

Just a few months ago, in August, you were talking about how you were impressed by how "owners are continuously opening bars OTR" and that operating a bar "must be a great business." I'm genuinely confused by how you see-saw between extreme optimisim and pessimism each few months. Edited October 28, 20213 yr by jwulsin

I'm genuinely confused by how you see-saw between extreme optimisim and pessimism each few months. I was mainly talking about the saturation of bars in otr and how people were still opening up bars in otr regardless of this saturation. That said, this has nothing really to do with the lack of new bars and restaurants this year. All I can currently count that is opening is: Mad Tree Restaurant The Comic shop Bar by Guerrilla Cinemas Bar Bar OTR (Queen City Radio group) OTR Stillhaus is apparently opening this fall Cbd: The French restaurant at the Foundry and Jeff Ruby new expanded spot The banks: Frost Haus The new restaurant being built at the empty pad Normally I’ll make a list I can count 15 new otr openings alone and another 10 scattered through cbd and the banks. Again, I get that there is a pandemic and a labor shortage but for whatever reason this is affecting Cincy way more than Columbus and Cleveland who are putting up a way higher rate of new openings. Just curious why is Cincy lagging so much?
October 28, 20213 yr But is it really? What similarly sized areas are you using for your comparison between the 3 C's? And how many bars and/or restaurants are going into new spaces vs closed businesses? I think this would give a better picture of how things are.
October 28, 20213 yr I'm actually really surprised and relieved at the amount of bars and restaurants that have stayed open through the pandemic. We anticipated more closings than what has happened so far. The whole industry is shifting and that will take some time to sort out. I'm not worried about the "slow down." “All truly great thoughts are conceived while walking.” -Friedrich Nietzsche

In OTR Somerset (which you called the most anticipated bar in years) opened recently, restaurants around Findlay like Kanji, Fillo, Mighty Good and others have opened, All the places on Court street downtown both bars and restaurants. Considering we are coming off an pandemic I'd consider it a good 2021.
November 1, 20213 yr Jacob Trevino set opening for newest OTR bar One of Cincinnati's fastest-growing, and most creative, hospitality groups is opening its latest venue in time for the holiday season. Cosmic Gorilla, a comic book shop and bar at 1834 Race St. across from Findlay Market, will open to the public on Black Friday, Nov. 26. Owner Jacob Trevino told me the comic book store portion of the venue will open on that date, but the bar's opening is dependent on permitting. November 30, 20213 yr https://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/news/2021/11/30/otr-still-house-opening.html OTR Still House at 2017 Branch Street is finally opening, this was announced so long ago I feared it had fizzled out. This corner of OTR has finally started to turn into a nice little brewery/distillery area again with this and Northern Row joining Rhinegeist. Hopefully soon the Mockbee or Jackson brewery (if it's even salvageable) can get some love. From Central Parkway it doesn't look like much but it has a nice outdoor area for when the weather gets warmer / next FCC season.
January 6, 20223 yr This is the nicest "dive bar" I've ever seen... Queen City Radio owner opens 'bridge-building' OTR dive bar The developer who rehabbed a historic service station into a bar and event center is at it again with a new dive bar that aims to bridge Over-the-Rhine's two major hubs of activity. Urban Expansion, a developer that has been rehabbing properties in Over-the-Rhine since 2005 and opened Queen City Radio in 2016, opened BarBar OTR at 1709 Race St. on Dec. 20. April 19, 20223 yr Booze and bitcoin: Walnut Hills wine shop, bar sets opening The owner of an Over-the-Rhine farm-to-table restaurant has set an opening date for his newest venue, a wine shop and tasting room in Walnut Hills. Daniel Souder, co-founder of the restaurant Pleasantry in Over-the-Rhine, will open Iris Read at 733 E. McMillan St. in Walnut Hills on April 22. Iris Read is a bottle shop primarily, but will also offer some wines by the glass and bottles for consumption on-site. The emphasis, as with Pleasantry's wine program, is on natural wines – those made using simple or traditional methods and typically without pesticides, herbicides or additives. In simple terms, grapes are grown and picked and then their juice is turned into wine without additives. April 29, 20223 yr That's sad, but at the same time I think being open from morning thru night, acting as both a coffee shop and a beer taproom has to be difficult to staff. I work in OTR and have never considered LOCOBA for coffee/breakfast/lunch but I do go there for beer/food in the evenings. Hopefully this isn't a closure but is more of a reconfiguring of hours/staffing/menu.
April 29, 20223 yr I've lived a couple blocks away from LOCOBA and am just now learning that they offered coffee and breakfast. They did a horrible job of advertising it. I thought they only served beer and food in the evening!

May 18, 20223 yr Bar operator Gorilla Cinema taking over management of Covington Yard Gorilla Cinema, one of Cincinnati's most creative bar operators, has taken over operations of a Northern Kentucky entertainment development. Gorilla Cinema, the company behind bars like Tokyo Kitty and Tiki Tiki Bang Bang, on Wednesday took over operations at Covington Yard, an outdoor entertainment destination with shipping containers converted into food stalls for restaurant vendors at 401 Greenup St. It is the bar operator's first foray across the river into Northern Kentucky. Gorilla Cinema founder Jacob Trevino told me his company was approached by Covcor Real Estate Investments LLC, the owner of Covington Yard, about managing the venue. "Across the river, it's a brand new market for Gorilla Cinema," he said. "It's a large space. With us and some of our ideas, we have to contain them in a smaller box, and we have a big backyard to play in now." May 27, 20223 yr 'DO THE RIGHT THING' Avondale native Rico Grant’s latest venture, Cinema OTR, brings the Cincinnati entrepreneur back home to Vine Street. If Rico Grant could start life over, he’d likely direct films. His love of movies was honed at an early age, a childhood filled with flicks like “House Party,” Spike Lee’s “Do the Right Thing” and “Jungle Fever.” “I remember being 12, watching a bunch of movies I shouldn’t have been watching, but I fell in love,” he said. “Those things heavily affected me as a person.” Perhaps then, Cinema OTR, Grant’s newest venture in a long-running line of entrepreneurial pursuits, can be considered a bit of that dream fulfilled. The high-end bar and cocktail lounge, set to open in Over-the-Rhine this summer, will truly lean into Black cinema and music. And it’s a place Grant envisions as unique to Cincinnati. It’s his most difficult, also arguably most personal, venture to date. Located at 1517 Vine St., just a few doors down from Italian eatery Pepp & Dolores, Cinema is also around the corner from his childhood home, on Vine in Avondale. Its where his grandmother lived for more than 60 years before she passed away this March at age 98. “She taught us a lot about the neighborhood,” Grant said. “The fact the bar is a mile away on the street I grew up on is very special to me.” More below: https://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/news/2022/05/27/rico-grant-profile.html "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

Blum, a veteran of Cincinnati's bar scene, most recently with Four Entertainment Group (4EG), told me that the idea was to bring a modern cocktail vibe with a touch of the Roaring '20s to an area of town that might be more accessible to people than urban areas like Over-the-Rhine. October 5, 20222 yr Taproom on Ludlow opened by Habanero Latin American Fare owner Max Monks The owner of Habanero on Ludlow in Clifton's Gaslight District just opened a craft beer bar nearby. October 28, 20222 yr Binski's Bar opening in Camp Washington A veteran of the Queen City's hospitality industry is opening a neighborhood bar in Camp Washington. Kiel Erdelac is opening Binski's Bar at 2872 Colerain Ave. in Camp Washington. His goal is to be open before the end of the year. "I feel that there is a gap in Cincinnati for bars that are just bars," Erdelac told me. "The term we use for Binski's is that we're a gimmick-less gimmick. It's a community space, a place for the neighborhood." November 1, 20222 yr Prime Cincinnati owner opens neighboring speakeasy A downtown Cincinnati steakhouse owner has converted a portion of a sistering restaurant into a members-only speakeasy. The owner of Prime Cincinnati at 580 Walnut St. downtown has opened a late-night speakeasy full of bourbons from hand-selected barrels that's accessible by a book case that flips open to reveal the bar. "The speakeasy is a kind of secret room that you have to go through the kitchen to reach," owner Nelson Castillo told me. November 2, 20222 yr I think the weirdest detail for me is that room gets used as part of Street City Pub dining room and then turns into the speakeasy Thursday through Sunday. Are they really going to be able to give this space a speakeasy look and feel if it has to serve a dual purpose? For comparison, a Delta Sky Club membership is $545/year (or you can pay $39 for a day pass if you've got a Delta AmEx) and all the food and drinks (excluding some "premium" options) are free once you're inside.

Are they really going to be able to give this space a speakeasy look and feel if it has to serve a dual purpose? Historians say that most speakeasies were actually really depressing, like a bunch of men sitting around a bottle under a bare lightbulb in a back storage area. All that fun footage of flapper girls with flasks in their garter belts dancing around a honky tonk piano was from right after Prohibition ended since before Prohibition men and women weren't allowed in the same bars anyway.
November 5, 20222 yr The Hub OTR bar plans to move into former Over-the-Rhine church The owner of an Over-the-Rhine bar has plans to move it to a neighboring building, which used to house a church. Cincinnati's Historic Conservation Board has approved plans to renovate the former John 3:16 Baptist Church at 1215 Main St. into a food and beverage establishment that will house OTR bar the Hub, which is currently located at 1209 Main St. Lindsey Swadner opened the Hub in 2017 as a neighborhood bar – which offers a $5 shot and a beer special daily – in the front with a bicycle shop in the back. Swadner declined to comment on the move. November 15, 20222 yr The Pitch bar installs mini soccer pitch, table games and food truck as part of overhaul After just more than a year in business, a bar across the street from FC Cincinnati's home TQL Stadium has made a host of upgrades, including installing its own miniature soccer pitch.
