111 E 13th St is the old location of offices for the OTR Chamber, right?

I don't think I've seen the Business Courier ever refer to anyone as a "former punk" before.

^ Almost as questionable as their frequent usage of the term "kitty corner".

Good to see something opening between Vine and Main.

Work is also underway at Mecca, a new bar located in the former Urban Sites office space at 15th & Walnut. Now if someone would just re-open Grammer's...

Yes.

^I bet there's some cat lady that gets frustrated when she goes down to those places and there aren't any kitties.

I looked the band up and they were a pretty incidental presence in the DC area for about 5 years.  Looks like they had significantly lower levels of notoriety in DC than do, for example, Tweens or Leggy do in Cincinnati right now.  They basically never headlined any local shows but were usually band 2-3 on a 5-band bill put together by a local promoter.

^Why do you often add ~ 8 blank lines below what you type? Is it a result of the device you're using or is this an intentional decision?

EDIT: Maybe you don't do it very often. Someone does, and I've been meaning to ask them, though. Thought it was you.

I think my work computer does it sometimes, for no apparent reason.

I just came home from work so I just checked out this video...geesh, worse than I expected.  I've spent probably 50 nights of my life at hardcore shows in various cities, and these dudes are weak...

Not gonna lie ... I went one time at the beginning of summer and haven't been in at least a couple of years and was surprised to see a lot of upper 20's to upper 30's there. No lie. It was packed.

My dumbest real estate move was to pass on this place back in 2004 or 5 when i was looking for a workshop. I chose to rent a place closer to me for 50 a month when this was for sale for like $12,000. I think the mortgage was like $50 a month too. Doh, never even considered living there back then, just a place to work on my truck when i lived in Clifton. Plus i worried about losing my tools to theft that far away and off in the alley. Never would have guessed the turnaround in ten or so years.

Get a sneak peek inside the Banks' newest addition: Howl at the Moon

The Banks' newest attraction opens Friday, and we've got a sneak preview inside the venue that houses eight lanes of bowling and dueling pianos.

Howl at the Moon started in Greater Cincinnati, opening its first location in Covington in the 1990s. While that has been closed for years, the dueling piano bar is returning to where it all started with a new location at the Banks, officially opening on Aug. 26. Click the photos below for a look inside.

Is the spelling "duece" a mistake or a play on the word "due" that I'm missing?

Oh, dear god!  We worked hard to close down that crack bar.  I really hope they're not planning on opening it back up.  The owner of the building has multiple ongoing property violations that he has yet to fix up and is accruing a lot of increasingly expensive fines for letting the building fall apart.

Here's when OTR's new 'everyman' bar will open

qcr-8*750xx1200-675-0-63.jpg

Over-the-Rhine's newest bar, in a 1940s auto shop, will be open with a massive beer garden in time to catch the waning days of summer.

Queen City Radio, at 222 W. 12th St. near Music Hall, will hold its grand opening on Sept. 16. Click through the photos below for a sneak peek inside the bar.

^ That place looks saweeet!

People will be surprised how big it is inside. The mezzanine is quite large, and there are an additional four bathrooms up there. You also have additional lounge/flex space provided by the former office which fronts 12th Street and the upper beer garden. Those have garage doors which open up, and the thresholds have been widened with concrete and topped with old repurposed joists to add seating/table area.

A sports bar with a neighborhood feel is the latest tenant in the $9 million Trevarren Flats mixed-use development in Walnut Hills.

Alex Spencer is opening Corner Social in a 1,700-square-foot storefront at 975 E. McMillan St. Spencer, a longtime resident of Walnut Hills, told me Corner Social is a concept he designing specifically for the neighborhood.

OTR urban winery opening alongside streetcar

kate-macdonald-of-the-skeleton-root*750xx853-1137-0-0.jpg

Over-the-Rhine's first winery since the heyday of Cincinnati as a wine-producing hub is opening just in time for patrons to take advantage of the streetcar.

Skeleton Root is opening its doors at 38 W. McMicken Ave. on Sept. 10, about two blocks from the northern-most streetcar (officially known as the Cincinnati Bell Connector) stop in OTR. The $148 million streetcar opens for passenger service on Sept. 9.

^ Interesting location. It is really is not close to anything, except for the fact that there's a streetcar stop a block away.

It is definitely on the outskirts of currently developed OTR, so I hope they get some more neighbors soon. I really like McMicken's scale and buildings so I hope more breweries/wineries start to move into the old Brewery district and make it more of actual 'district' instead of just a line on a map. There is a ton of potential up there, but it would be a bit nerve racking and lonely to be the first one.

I could imagine their business plan relies much more on retail sales, and so location isn't the most important aspect of their finances and they see it as a great future site, so they jumped on it. No need to be renting expensive space on Vine Street if they don't have to.

OTR's Japp's to launch food service this weekend

Wellmann's Brands is again expanding food service to one of its locations, marking the third bar to get a food menu after its acquisition of Melt and Picnic and Pantry.

Japp's Since 1879 at 1136 Main St. in Over-the-Rhine will begin serving food on Sept. 16. The food will be prepared and catered in by Bottle & Basket, the rebranded Picnic and Pantry that expanded its services after the acquisition.

OTR's newest bar is now open for business

qcr-8*750xx1200-675-0-63.jpg

Over-the-Rhine's newest bar is open for business in a rehabbed 1940s auto shop.

Queen City Radio is hosting its grand opening Sept. 16. The bar, in a former auto body shop, is billed as an "everyman" bar and serves everything from local and national craft beers to national macro-brews. The owners pride themselves on being able to serve craft cocktails right alongside bourbon slushies.

So apparently Neons is closing in December and they're claiming it's a "lease dispute" which is, according to those who know the owners, just PR fabrication. Apparently Japp's isn't likely to survive much longer either.

Neon's ownership has had numerous issues with the owner of the building since Day 1.  The building experienced rotting joists and other issues because the owner did not clean out the gutters during the years while the property was vacant.  I believe they went to court over that, with the owner somehow claiming that the bar was responsible.  I don't know how that was resolved, but the repairs were in the neighborhood of $50k.

That's pretty amazing. I don't go there often but it always seems to be packed when I do. Don't know what the folks who drink and have dogs will do now.

That's incredible if that does indeed happen.

Main St in OTR will be incredibly dead at night if this comes to be the case. These are easily the two most popular bars in all of OTR. Losing them will be absolutely devastating to say the least.

Main St in OTR will be incredibly dead at night if this comes to be the case. These are easily the two most popular bars in all of OTR. Losing them will be absolutely devastating to say the least.

It's what happened back in 2003 when the owners didn't renew the leases of close to 10 bars on Main St.  Mr. Pitifull's is the only survivor of that era.  Everyone says business died after the "riot" in 2001, but that's not true.  Two of the major property owners thought they were going to remake Main St. has a high-end area (basically what Vine St. became 10 years later) but nobody signed on.  That includes the original Neon's, which closed in the early 2000s.  The current owner got the building from an inheritance or divorce or something like that.

The Neon's property measures 190x90.  So if Neon's itself is converted into a single-family house, that leaves space for at least six more single family houses.  So I'd expect that either that is going to happen or we'll see a small apartment or condo building constructed where the current patio and parking lot is.  I have heard that the owner thinks a high end restaurant will want to move in, but I think it's just too easy to sell the property as-is for $1 million+ and realize a huge gain after having earned a ton in rent from Neon's for the past 7 years without putting a dime into the property.

When Neons closes it's not like the people who would go there will just go, "never mind, never going out again" and never go back to OTR. There are dozens of bars, including a new one with an outdoor area, which can absorb that demand.

Really? Why is that, they both still draw lots of business, neons is packed all the time. Is it just bad management?

They don't own the buildings they're located in. Neons is located in a building that has caused some troubles in the past but the word on the street is that not owning has their building has gotten to the point of being a problem for them.

Japp's had to close their annex as a result of the renovations to the office space above which needed that space to rebuild the stairwell which was illegally removed in the past. So they've already lost 2/3 of their capacity.

That and the owner (Michael) is married to Holly, the listing agent for 3CDC. Or should I say, "former listing agent." That realtor team, Holly and Stacy, was fired from all 3CDC projects.

So the couple is likely in a crappy financial position at the moment.

Yeah I think the owner of the Neon's building is trying to jack up the rent to cash in on the rising popularity of OTR. So the people who run Neon's are trying to find a new location to move to.

Except they're not actually. Everyone I've spoken to that knows the owners personally said that's just PR and nothing more and that they have no intention of ever continuing the Neons name or bringing it to a new location.
