Sometimes those hardcore movie people can be difficult to be around.

It essentially takes no real commitment to be a movie superfan.  I hate Phish, but being a superfan requires going to at least 5 of their shows a year, and those only happen on certain days in certain cities.  Any movie is playing all the time on any VCR internet connection.  You watched such and such a movie?  What a badass.

OTR's newest bar is a Mecca for artists: PHOTOS

The owner of Over-the-Rhine's newest bar wants people to stop saying the neighborhood feels like Portland or Brooklyn and start recognizing their own city.

Mecca OTR quietly opened at 1429 Walnut St. on Nov. 11. Owner Joe Creighton, who opened the bar with his wife, Robin, and Jon Mouch, co-owner of Cheapside Cafe along with Creighton, wanted to keep it quiet to allow Cincinnati to discover something new in its own backyard.

4EG partners with actor for new Short Vine bar

Four Entertainment Group (4EG) partnered with an actor to open a new bar on Short Vine inspired by a Los Angeles nightclub.

The Dime hosted its grand opening at 2611 Vine St. on Dec. 3. The bar is a partnership between 4EG, actor Andy Fiscella and real estate professional Tony Engel.

I think that is the former Norton Photography storefront.

Rumors are Neon's will host it's last night on December 17.

It'll be interesting to see if the former Neon's becomes the new Diner/Sycamore Gardens/Club Clau/Red Cheetah/Club Glitter.  That whole corner has been cursed since 90s with the exception of Neon's.

http://www.wcpo.com/entertainment/local-a-e/famous-neons-unplugged-serving-last-drink-at-current-location-december-17

More baffling than Neon's is the failure of whoever owns the former Sycamore Gardens building to just tear the thing down and put up some apartments.  And as I have speculated before, we very well might see the neon's patio turned into 5 $600k homes.

I hear Red Cheetah was the place!

Rumors are already circulating that 4EG will take over the old Neon's space. Which is a good thing because most of their bars are pretty nice.

Speaking of the former Sycamore Gardens, I haven't heard any news about ReMixx or Joe's Diner recently so it might be safe to assume that it's not happening. "OTR Live" opened in the interior and I don't know how successful it's been, but I know some of my friends went to see a comedian there a few weeks back.

Popular Over-the-Rhine bar Neons to close, relocate

A staple of the Over-the-Rhine bar scene will close its doors – temporarily – later this month.

The Famous Neons Unplugged at 208 E. 12th St. is closing on Dec. 17. Its lease is set to expire on Dec. 31.

Wellmann's Brands, which owns that bar along with Japp's Since 1897, Myrtle's Punch House, Old Kentucky Bourbon Bar, Melt and Bottle & Basket, plans to reopen it in a new location in 2017. The company said in a news release that it had been actively looking for a new space that will satisfy the shortcomings of the existing location since 2013.

"Anyone would rather have a large indoors that doesn't have a slanted bar that goes up twice," co-owner Jeff Brandt told me. "The inside space was limited, we didn't have a kitchen, and someday we hope to have a kitchen."

I thought there was already some sort of bike-related business called The Hub in that space for the last few years. I guess they're adding a bar?

If you didn't think that they could come up with a worse name than Mynt, get ready for... Jekyll!

Not to be confused with Jackyl:

A bar named Jekyll should be in Hyde Park square, so that it would be called Jekyll in Hyde...

I saw Jackyl play at Annie's.

There used to be a restaurant called "Jekyll's in Hyde Park" on the site of what is now the Kroger gas station in Hyde Park Plaza.

Discotheque – you read that right – coming to Northside

Shooks sounds like a straight-up Appalachian bar. If only it was called Shook's II...

"She's a Brick House" 4X a night

That's an interesting block. There's a bar on 9th and Race that I had never heard about until walking by recently. Shooters, on the other end of the block, closed awhile back, so I'm told. And of course, halfway between those two is Yum Yum, one of the most hole-in-the-wall restaurants in the city.

I've eaten there once. I took a girl on maybe our second date. We were the only ones there and seated in the back room which was surprisingly large and very poorly lit. The owner brought out a tray stand and placed a 1970s electric heater with the exposed coils on it as the sole source of heat for the room. I ordered the "Yum Yum Ding Dong Chicken" which has apparently been on their menu since at least 1983 according to Cincinnati Magazine.

If only it was called Shook's II...

There used to be Vince's and Vince's Other Place.  Also two of four cardinal directions when I lived in Knoxville -- The Mouse's Ear North and the Mouse's Ear South.

I remember this being in the news about a year ago. They wanted to be in a location closer to downtown but Hamilton County's health department was not willing to work with them regarding their interpretation of laws about animals in food service establishments. Warren County must have been more flexible.

These have been around in Asia for awhile I think, Taipei has a cat cafe on pretty much every block.

^are people physically surviving their visits to these cafes?  Or are they dens of cat-borne illnesses?

They should have a disclaimer that pregnant women should not consume food there for fear of toxoplasmosis

They should have a disclaimer that pregnant women should not consume food there for fear of toxoplasmosis

Isn't that pretty much only if you're around cat litter?  Seems like an over-abundance of caution.

In the US I think health codes generally make it so that the cats are kept in one room, and the food service is in another. So you aren't really eating with the cats, it's more like a big cat shelter with a coffee shop attached. In Taiwan there seemingly aren't any rules at all and the cats are just all over the place. So far as I know no one has ever died as a result of this. I'm heading there in May and while looking for hotels found a hotel that apparently has cats. I'm not sure how that works but needless to say it's absolutely on my short list of places to stay.
