In a nutshell, black person denied entry to bar for dress code violation, people complained on facebook, employee said dumb racist stuff to those commentors, employee was fired and a bad press release was put out that made situation worse. Dress code was re-iterated in the press release as "No Weapons, no white t-shirts, no sagging pants, no oversized necklaces, no basketball shorts, no poor personal hygiene or dirty clothing".

So even if not intentionally racist, certainly a certain profile is created, and the press release didn't apologize or admit any wrong doing.

Why am I not surprised that there has already been an unfortunate incident with that new bar? That patio and the building behind it are a revolving door for bars run by owners who make questionable decisions.

Here is a link to their press release: http://mccabemedia.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/TreehousePatioBarPressRelease06.05.2017final.pdf

"Over the last several days, many people who have never been to our establishment are creating an onslaught of negative reviews..."

Their original Facebook page has been deleted and their new one went live ~45m ago and already has 43 1 star reviews.

"It's just fate, as usual, keeping its bargain and screwing us in the fine print..." - John Crichton

The weirdly defensive and poorly written press release certainly doesn't help the situation.

Their dress code is actually in line with many other bars around town. Mt. Adams Pavilion has a similar dress code, for example.

I feel like the easiest way to control who patrons your bar is to just play certain music. If one bar plays Toby Keith, one plays FIDLAR and the other Fetty Wap, those three places will automatically attract different types of people and that's OK. It's when it becomes a written down policy that it starts to feel weird.

Bars and clubs can let whoever they want in, right? I've stood in line for bullshit clubs in Vegas and LA where the door attendant comes and selects people out of the line to let in. Presumably they pick people who are dressed the nicest, most attractive, etc. it sucks, but it's their right to be choosy, right?

I've been barred from entering bars in Cincy before because I had Rainbows (flip flops) on. No biggie...there are plenty of other places around who will take my money.

Motorcycle bars and biker events routinely ban gang colors to keep troublemakers out.

There's nothing wrong with having a dress code, it seems to be a problem with how they handled this particular situation. Their press release had a "we are the victim of fake negative reviews on Yelp" feel, instead of an "our bouncer made a big mistake and has been fired" feel. When they came out with their new Facebook page, they added a bunch of photos with strategically placed diversity. People immediately pointed out, there were white guys in those photo wearing plain white t-shirts and oversized necklaces. So, if you're going to have a dress code that bans those things, you should be consistent in enforcing them. Or, they should just admit that they're one of those bars that hand picks its patrons...which I don't think would succeed in OTR.

While I have no personal knowledge of the events, what I am hearing is that the dress code is only in effect starting at 9 p.m.  You can wear whatever you like before that time period and you will be admitted. But if you show up on the weekend at 9 p.m. or later and are not in line with the dress code, you will be denied entry. Regardless of your shade of melanin, you will be admitted and denied based on your dress and the time of your arrival. To my knowledge, this is what happened. However, the story quickly became that TPB was discriminating against African-Americans. An onslaught of FB posts ensued, and the person responding to the FB posts made some questionable responses which only made matters worse. The situation could have been handled better.

OTR bar overhauls patio into 'oasis' for summer

An Over-the-Rhine bar that opened late last year has renovated its outdoor space into a tropical oasis for the summer.

Mecca at 1429 Walnut St. has opened a second bar in its patio and transformed the outdoor space into a lush green canopy, continuing the indoor theme of featuring the works of local artists. The bar will also soon introduce a food concept parked in the corner of the patio. Click through the photos below for a look at the overhauled space.

Beloved West End bar shuts its doors

A West End bar that became a haven for musicians, artists and Cincinnati's DIY scene has closed its doors.

YES very sad but true, if you love the Rake come say goodbye tonight, unless things are postponed last minute this is the End, please let Jerome know what the bar/venue meant to you, he needs community and friends during this terribly difficult time...

I really like his other two bars so I'll be interested to see how this one ends up.  Certainly a niche that isn't filled downtown though I'm not sure how much of a demand there is for karaoke.  The 84.51 building has done a good job of filling their retail space.

I heard that the guy who owns Rake's End also owned a warehouse where someone ratted him out for letting people live in unpermitted spaces (like the Ghost Ship in Oakland).  The illegal rent was keeping Rake's open.

I think the private karaoke rooms will be really popular with groups from downtown businesses looking for a 'team building' event all the way to bachelorette parties. If the real bar creates half the atmosphere they are describing in that article it should be a really cool place. I personally don't like to sing karaoke, but that doesn't mean I won't drink glowing Japanese tiki cocktails and dance on a neon lit dancefloor...

4EG has tweeted a few photos from the inside of Rosedale (the bar moving in to the former Neon's space) with the caption "great things take time" (they originally said they'd open in Fall 2017). It looks like the second floor has been completely redone with another bar area replacing the lounge room. Also, the iconic fire hydrant wallpaper has been removed.

At least they replaced it with more ridiculous wallpaper

I walked by the other day and it looks almost ready to go. Just need to stock the shelves and open. I'd say they open by at least Dec. 20 of this year, the last technical day of fall.

“All truly great thoughts are conceived while walking.”
-Friedrich Nietzsche

I wouldn't be surprised if they try to open in time for Thanksgiving. Biggest bar night of the year.

OTR getting a bowling alley

Anyone hear any updates on this?  I was at Pins in Columbus a couple weeks ago and it's a really fun place that's super popular.  Hope they're still planning on opening here as it would do really well in OTR.  I remember 16 Bit took longer to open then they originally estimated so hoping it's the same story for Pins.

I can tell you from experience that it takes forever to get an arcade open. You wouldn't think it would, but it does.

I see zero fire hydrant wallpaper. Iamdissapoint.

In all seriousness, nice to see a bar opening in this spot again.

I was there for the media preview night last night and was pretty impressed. They kept what was cool about Neon's and added some higher end finishes. There seemed to be more bar seating at bar and there's an additional bar in the upstairs room now.

No disrespect intended to the folks who put together Neon's Unplugged. Can't wait to see where their "new Neon's" ends up.

Last week Schwartz's Point had a homecoming show for the St. X jazz diaspora...well 3 of the active musicians that came out of there when I was there.  A few more are out there.  On vocals Miles Grier, piano Alex Smith, and drums Jeremy Cunningham.

schwartzs_point_zpsyp7qm6b8.jpg

I remember the guy on drums flipping out at camp in 1995 when word spread that Jerry Garcia died.  At some point over the next year he pivoted from jam bands to jazz.  He was a year younger than me but by the time I left he was starting to get it.  There is always a little bit of fear that creeps up in you as an upperclassman when someone you ignored as a freshman starts getting good.

Sleepy Bee opens downtown Cincinnati bar

While downtown Cincinnati diners are still waiting for the Sleepy Bee Cafe’s debut on Fourth Street, its creators have opened another entertainment and dining concept in the same building, the Enquirer reports.

Aster Social Sippery is now open on the third floor of the building at 8 E. Fourth St. The bar serves craft cocktails and a rotating selection of high-end bar fare with a balcony overlooking the street. It will eventually serve a chef-created brunch menu that differs from the offerings at Sleepy Bee.

Look inside Tokyo Kitty, the sensory overload karaoke bar from Gorilla Cinema

Tokyo Kitty is the latest bar by Gorilla Cinema Presents, the creative company that brought Cincinnati bars inspired by Stephen King's "The Shining" and the films of Quentin Tarantino. Its grand opening is Feb. 9.

Tokyo Kitty, located in the 84.51 Building, is meant to be visual. It's meant to be a visual overload. Owner Jacob Trevino told me, perhaps half joking, that he never thought he'd have to put an epilepsy warning on one of his bars. Go look through the photos.
