Sundry & Vice co-founder opening retro-style bar in OTR

The co-founder of Sundry & Vice, recently named one of the world's best bars, and the woman behind the 21c Museum Hotel's monthly cocktail class are teaming up to bring a new retro bar to Over-the-Rhine.

Julia Petiprin and Catherine Manabat are opening a yet-unnamed bar at 35 E. 13th St. on the ground floor of the Cincinnati Center City Development Corp.'s (3CDC) Stafford project. The goal is to be open by the late spring or early summer.

Petiprin came to Cincinnati from Los Angeles in 2015 to open Sundry & Vice, where she met Manabat, who worked for Columbus distillery Watershed Distilling.

"I was originally only supposed to be here for a year, but I fell in love with Cincinnati," Petiprin told me. "When I moved here from L.A., I didn’t know anybody, but opening Sundry & Vice the community embraced us and me and it feels like everyone is so excited about their city and making it great. I love to be a part of that."

Cincinnati DJ opening ‘modern, tropical party bar’ at the Banks

fishbowlinterior*750xx1102-620-12-0.jpg

A Cincinnati disc jockey and entrepreneur is opening a tropical party bar and restaurant at the Banks.

Fishbowl at the Banks is a new bar and restaurant from Danny Scott, also known as DJ Sab of KISS 107, who has signed a long-term lease for about 1,400 square feet of space in the first phase of the Banks. The space was formerly part of WG Kitchen + Bar.

Scott said he has been trying to find the right location for several concepts. When he heard this space at the Banks was available, he said it was like a dream come true.

“The Banks is still the premier party destination, it’s a hot spot,” Scott told me. “It’s going to be a fun, energetic, modern, funky tropical party bar.”

Wine bar, influenced by cheap Gallo and the Grateful Dead, coming to Covington

e7671c9b-614f-46ad-b407-20fabe50d0df-Rip

A wine bar influenced in equal parts by a cheap 1960s Gallo offering and a Grateful Dead song is coming to Covington next month.

Ripple Wine Bar is coming to 4 W. Pike St. in Covington. Husband and wife Matt and Kathleen Haws hope to open it before St. Patrick's Day.

The centerpiece of Ripple's wine program will be a 10-foot-long cruvinet, or a temperature controlled wine tap system that can house 29 bottles and uses tasteless, odorless nitrogen to dispense the wine. That keeps it fresh for up to three months after a bottle is opened.

OTR's Sundry and Vice owner turns to Walnut Hills for next bar

bath-house-600.jpg?s=f

The owner of Over-the-Rhine's Sundry and Vice, named one of the world's best bars, is opening a new concept in Walnut Hills.

Owner Stuart King and general manager Jack Keane are planning to open the Comfort Station at 793 E. McMillan St. early this summer.

"The revitalization of Walnut Hills has been on our radar for some time and, as with Sundry and Vice, we are drawn to up-and-coming neighborhoods," King told me in an email. "We were touched by the amount of involvement and passion of the residents and stakeholders in Walnut Hills and how much they wanted to revitalize it and see it come to life again."

The concept will house two distinct spaces. The name itself draws from the 100-year-old building that houses it, known as a "Public Comfort Station" that provided a rest area and bathing house along a busy transit line and retail corridor.

Cincinnati's massive new bar is based on a tailgating game

Fowling Warehouse, a place to play a football bowling pin game, is opening its first location outside of Michigan in Oakley.

Fowling Warehouse Cincinnati has signed a five-year lease for 47,000 square feet of space at 2940 Highland Ave. Joe Frank, one of the owners of Fowling Warehouse Cincinnati, said fowling is a household name in the Detroit. When Chris Hutt, the founder of Fowling Warehouse, decided to start franchising, Frank and his partners knew they wanted to open one.

“We wanted to be the first,” Frank told me as we toured the warehouse.

^ I remember years ago meeting with one of Cincinnati's well known self-proclaimed "Big Ideas" guys to see if the organization he worked with could partner/sponsor revitalization work in some of the non-core neighborhoods in the city, and he went on this strange rant about 'fowling', and how it's so cool, and that Cincinnati needed to land a fowling place. He assured me it was all the rage in Detroit, and we were missing out big time by not having a fowling bar. I'm sure he's thrilled by this announcement. ?

This Grateful Dead-inspired Covington bar just opened its doors

A bar inspired by the Grateful Dead and cheap wine is now open in the heart of Covington.

Ripple Wine Bar quietly opened its doors at 4 W. Pike St. in Covington on April 12. The bar is the latest project by husband and wife Matt and Kathleen Haws, who opened the Grandview Tavern in Fort Mitchell.

Ripple is inspired in part by a cheap wine produced by Gallo in the '60s, which was the immediate predecessor to the wine cooler, as well as by the Haws' favorite Grateful Dead song of the same title.

Jacob Trevino turns to his heritage for upcoming Findlay Market bar

30-findlay-st-cincinnati-oh-primary-phot

Hot off of opening its first steakhouse, the group that brought Cincinnati bars like Overlook Lodge, Video Archive and Tokyo Kitty is turning to the golden age of Mexican cinema as inspiration for its newest bar concept.

Gorilla Cinema is opening La Ofrenda at 30 Findlay St., a block from Cincinnati's historic Findlay Market. It's expected to debut in late summer 2019.

"The first three bars were my exploration of pop culture, my next will be an exploration of where I came from and my family. They're very personal," Gorilla Cinema founder Jacob Trevino told me.

La Ofrenda is Spanish for "The Offering." An ofrenda is frequently associated with the Mexican Day of the Dead: families will build an offering to their relatives and ancestors who have died.

Look inside Wodka Bar, a taste of the old country in OTR

I just walked by that place the other day and couldn't tell if it was open to the public, or even what it was. I thought it might be related to the Empower across the street or something. I felt like @jmecklenborg, because that place had no signage or did anything to let you know it was a business.

That's sort of the new trend alot of bars are leaning toward with secrecy. Creates a more exclusive vibe.

You can only get away with that in a place like Cincinnati where everyone knows each other. You try to pull that crap in Columbus and by the time people do find out about you it will be time for them to move away.

It also helps to have a carefully constructed and funded social media campaign, along with connections to folks like those who decide what the Business Courier publishes. How many dozens of bars open around the metro every month, and how many get an article written about them in the Business Courier?

Certainly not the NASCAR ones.

There are plenty of speakeasy type bars that are popular in NYC, where 99.99% of the population don't know each other.  If they can be successful there I'm pretty sure they'd do alright in Columbus.

I would say just about every bar or restaurant opening in Downtown and OTR gets an article written about it in the Business Courier.

Usually multiple articles. One when it is announced, maybe another about the proprietor if they have an interesting back story, another when it opens.

But I prefer the theory that Andy Brownfield is some sort of elite tastemaker, deciding which bars and restaurants exceed his standards and deserve the attention of the Business Courier's highly discerning subscriber base.

I doubt that 90% of people who will drink alcohol in Cincinnati tonight have heard of The Business Courier.

But I bet 50% of Business Courier readers will drink alcohol tonight.

Shwartz is great, don't get me wrong. They have been a staple in the otr community for so long now...that said it's surrounded by such a sketchy area and this truly hurts their business. A new jazz club in a safe corridor of otr would probably be the nail coffin for shwartz.

Molly Wellmann has completely redone Japp's; take a look inside

Cincinnati bar maven Molly Wellmann took over her flagship bar, Japp's since 1879, last summer, and over the past few months she has completely overhauled the interior to more reflect her personality. Now, that's fully on display.

Japp's, at 1136 Main St., is nearly unrecognizable from what it was for years, since the former Wellmann's Brands took over in 2011. Gone are the pale greens and browns, and the pergola that dominated the entire entryway adjacent to the bar has been removed and replaced with a custom banquette. The old hair paraphernalia is gone from the streetside windows, which have been cleared out and now look in on the bar.

OTR lagering tunnels to become nightclub, music venue

Subterranean tunnels that were dug into the bedrock of Over-the-Rhine to keep beer cold while it fermented are getting new life as an experimental and experiential space for music, drink and gathering.

Lagering tunnels dating back to the 1850s beneath Union Hall at 1311 Vine St. are being transformed into Ghost Baby, a nightclub and music venue created by Agar co-founder and Transept partner Josh Heuser. The goal is for the space to open around the end of the year.

"There's something about giving old buildings and spaces new energy and life," Heuser told me. "I've always had this mantra that it was here long before me and it'll be here long after me, so if you can put good bones and energy into it, it'll pay you back tenfold."

Look inside La Ofrenda, Gorilla Cinema's newest bar

Gorilla Cinema's newest bar offers to take Cincinnati back to an era celebrated not only in the Golden Age of Mexican cinema, but also in the past of its founder, Jacob Trevino.

La Ofrenda, the sixth venue by Gorilla Cinema, opens 6 p.m. Dec. 31 at 30 Findlay St. in Over-the-Rhine. Flip through the photos above for a look inside.

La Ofrenda is a mezcaleria, a celebration of agave spirits. Tequila is probably the best-known, but the bar stocks 130 different bottles all made from distillate produced from the agave plant, including mezcals, sotols and even pechuga, an agave spirit made by cooking the plant underneath raw chicken, the steam from which cooks the chicken, and the drippings from which flavor the liquor.

"You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

Stopped by La Ofrenda on opening night. The interior space is great and there is a nice outdoor area with a fire pit that will be great on warmer days. The selection of beer is extremely limited (they are really sticking to the tequila/mezcal/sotol theme) so I don't see it being a place I spend a lot of time, but a great place to stop by for a nice cocktail or two.
