Entertainment company Gorilla Cinema to transition Cosmic Gorilla, Galactic Cantina into new concept

A Findlay Market comic book store and bar is transitioning into a new concept.

Cincinnati-based entertainment company Gorilla Cinema first opened Cosmic Gorilla in 2021 at 1834 Race St. with a comic book shop in the front and a bar in the back.

The bar has had different iterations but is currently operating as the Star Wars-themed Galactic Cantina.

Both will close after the last day of service Sunday, July 21, and the entire 2,500-square-foot space will transition into Gorilla Cinema’s newest concept, Highball.

It's expected to open in fall 2024.

The Park, a new bar and restaurant, opens in former burger joint at the Banks

A new bar and restaurant with an outdoor feel is now open in Cincinnati.

The Park recently opened its doors in the former BurgerFi space, located at 161 E. Freedom Way at the Banks.

It’s the second location from hospitality industry veterans Chase Daoud and Will Hodges, who opened the Well in Covington in 2022. They operate under the name HD Restaurant Group.

The two started getting serious about the space in January, and by February, a long-term lease was signed. In April, the group made the announcement that the restaurant and bar would be opening later this year. According to Hodges, working with the Banks landlord Crawford Hoying has been a great experience.

4EG to close OTR's the Drinkery to rebrand into cocktail lounge

Cincinnati's largest bar operator is closing one of its Over-the-Rhine locations to rebrand it as a laid-back cocktail lounge.

Local hospitality group Four Entertainment Group (4EG) is permanently closing the Drinkery, located at 1150 Main St., in mid-August to make way for a complete rebrand.

The move has been months in the making. 4EG acquired the Drinkery last year, on April 1, 2023, and Bob Deck, managing partner, told me post-acquisition that the bar was in need of a refresh. The Drinkery opened in 2010, but the space had previously served as Jefferson House Salon.

“It’s fairly rundown. It’s just taken a beating along the way,” Deck said.

Rhinegeist vet to open new brewery in former Taft's Ale House space in OTR

A new brewery and restaurant is opening in a well-known historic spot in Cincinnati.

Mellotone Beer Project, backed by two veterans of the craft beer industry, is opening later this year in the former Taft’s Ale House, located at 1429 Race St. in Over-the-Rhine.

Cincinnati Center City Development Corp. (3CDC) purchased and renovated the 12,345-square-foot structure back in 2015. In November 2023, Taft’s announced it was closing after eight years in business.

Mellotone co-owners Dennis Kramer-Wine, the former director of culture and founding director of distribution at nearby Rhinegeist Brewery, and Alexandra Nowell, a career brewer and founding brewmaster at Three Weavers, one of the largest craft breweries in Los Angeles, have been searching for the perfect spot for the past two years.

Kramer-Wine said they were toying with the idea of opening in the Central Business District but ultimately decided OTR was the best option.

“We took our time, because we knew it had to be right,” Kramer-Wine said.

FC Cincinnati to add $1.5M speakeasy to TQL Stadium

MLS club FC Cincinnati is spending $1.5 million to add a speakeasy to its home at TQL Stadium, creating a unique, 2,000-square-foot premium offering that will be sold on a game-by-game basis when it opens in late summer.

The club already has the most premium spaces in MLS and leads the league in premium revenue – a healthy seven figures annually, according to Chief Revenue Officer Jeff Smith – and has a premium seating waitlist, all of which supported the speakeasy business case. Most speakeasies in sports venues are typically only accessible through annual memberships, but FC Cincinnati hopes to use its speakeasy – designed by MSA Design, one of the region's largest architecture firms, with capacity for 50 – to attract groups that might not otherwise attend a soccer game or aren’t already fans of the club.

At nearly 5,000 square feet, the Level One space will be one of the larger bars in OTR. Owner Paul Burkhart said it's about 1,000 square feet larger than his original space in Columbus, which allowed him to pack in 40 arcade game cabinets, 12 pinball machines and two Skee-Ball games.

Level One has announced they will be permanently closing the Cincinnati location. The final day will be tomorrow, February 2.

This is a really difficult space for any business to survive. There isn't a ton of foot traffic on Walnut. It's also a very large space; I bet it will be subdivided into multiple spaces.

Oh and it's on a one-way street. Yes I know everyone thinks about the first 16-Bit in Columbus being a pioneer in the region and how it was successful enough to build an entire regional bar group around while being on a one-way but they're still risky.

The main thing I remember about video arcades was not having the money to play the games.  So we would spend 20-30 minutes walking around watching the demos and checking every coin return for a forgotten quarter.

Years later, the Cincinnati Art Museum had a show of Ringling Brothers' circus posters that were printed locally from about 1890-1910.  A placard read that people from the country who couldn't afford to attend the circus would come into rural towns just to look at the circus posters.   That's what it felt like being a kid in the 80s when your house didn't allow or couldn't afford video games.

Yeah totally different than the problem I had when I had the game stores. Half the store was $2.99 before the virus hit.

The 100+ new apartments being built a block up should help.  Those won't be finished until 2027 though since they aren't planning to start until this summer. It would also be a huge help if they developed the two huge parking lots between 14th and 15th.  That is such a waste of prime real estate.  I also agree converting Walnut into a two way street in OTR would be a big help, but not sure if that will ever happen.

Bagelry, Che, and Nolia (half a block over) do good business on Walnut.  You're right that space is huge and I wouldn't be surprised if it's split up.  Or a restaurant could potentially go in there since there currently isn't a kitchen.  Multiple buildings are currently being rehabbed in this area and then the new apartments is mostly new builds.  Get more places opened on the street level of these rehabbed/new buildings and the foot traffic will follow.

Woah, woah, woah. Are you suggesting that some of the ground floor retail space in Over-the-Rhine could be used for businesses that are oriented towards people who actually live in the neighborhood instead of more exciting new high-end restaurant and bar concepts? I don't know, sounds pretty radical to me.

A local pharmacy probably won't succeed. So many people already get their prescriptions filled at Kroger, Walgreens, CVS, or online. I just don't see how a pharmacy can survive in OTR.

People love to wax poetic about needing laundromats, pharmacies, etc in OTR. But I just don't see a business opportunity there that makes profit. It would be great for some people, but the vast majority will simply go to a big company

“We have some very close friends who are deeply engaged in the city of Wyoming who were looking for partners on a cocktail concept,” Salzbrun told me. “Given that there (were) none in downtown Wyoming, we decided to partner on the project and bought the real estate.”

'Do it your own way, and it will work': Hoffner Pub opens in historic Northside building

A new bar is now open in one of the Queen City’s most eclectic neighborhoods.

The Hoffner Pub started serving customers May 3 inside the historic Hoffner Lodge building at 4120 Hamilton Ave. The 1,200-square-foot space was previously home to the Loon Wine Bar, which moved locations late last year after a nearly year-long hiatus.

Landlords and couple Megan Kelley and Andy Thomas decided to open their own bar rather than hunt down a new tenant. Thomas said that although bar ownership hasn't been a lifelong dream, it’s the right move for his business and his family.
