Eh, good drinks but lackluster food.

that's putting it charitably. It filled a void for chotch that lasted maybe a year or so until everyone upped and moved to Lodge, Caddy Ranch etc.  It certainly is a large place, when you add the back rooms and everything into the mix.

I can't say I went there very often, if at all....but I do remember a horrendous order of disgusting nachos that were ordered during a March Madness party my alumni group had there. blech.

Evidently Towne Properties is glad to see Sully's gone...and that's saying something.  It also sounds like Towne may have a willing suitor for the space within the next couple of months.  Don't expect this space to sit for long.

Twist, former Pigall’s to reopen

http://cincinnati.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/stories/2009/08/17/daily25.html

Twist Lounge, the popular cocktail club that had sat beside the former Pigall’s restaurant, has closed and will reopen – along with Pigall’s – in mid-September.

The former four-star restaurant, which had been operated by French chef Jean-Robert de Cavel, will reopen Sept. 15 as Local 127, said Justin Dean, COO of the Relish Restaurant Group, which owns the locations. Twist, which closed Aug. 15 for a change in decor, will reopen as Tonic Union.

^ Let's all name a timeframe and see who comes the closest...

My guess ... 60 days.

Sully's downtown closes

By Lori Kurtzman, Cincinnati Enquirer, August 18, 2009

The reason behind the abrupt closing Friday of downtown sports bar Sully’s Saloon remains a mystery.

Even to the people who worked there.

“A bartender showed up one morning and the doors were closed,” said former event coordinator Rebecca Holtman. “It’s kinda shady.”

"We're delighted that they're closed and we're looking forward to moving ahead," he said. "The key is to find a quality operator and we concluded awhile ago that casual American fare is the right fit."

Yeah Randy, looks like they were... delighted to have them move out. As to the reason why, I have no idea.

I have no connections here, but the purely speculative part of me would say drugs were involved.

Cool... Sixth Street looks like it's quickly becoming like Cincinnati's version of Chicago's Rush Street. It would be nice to see the Terrace Hotel redeveloped into something cool, like a boutique hotel on the upper floors and a movie theater in the lower "box" portion of the building.

Even better to see some of that space used for large scale family entertainment like bowling alley/pizza.  But about Sully's was the place considered a good bar, it was a sports bar right so was it the place o really watch a game.  I went there 2 or 3 times and it didn't seem that hot to me.

New bar headed to Sixth Street

http://cincinnati.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/blog/2009/08/new_bar_headed_to_sixth_street.html

A new bar is coming to Sixth Street, just next door to where investors Martin and Marilyn Wade (JeanRo, Lavomatic, Chalk) plan on opening their next restaurant.

The bar, to be called FB, is at 126 W. Sixth St., between Elm and Race streets. It is scheduled to open by mid-September.

According to records filed by the Ohio Division of Liquor Control, a liquor license was transferred July 8 to FB LLC from Este Conference Center LLC.

Not bad timing, since Sully’s around the corner at Seventh and Race abruptly closed its doors this week. The building’s owner, Towne Properties, is seeking a new tenant.

The Wades, who operate the holding company Relish Restaurant Group, purchased 120 W. Sixth St., a former Ethiopian restaurant, in 2007. Their plan is to develop what will be their smallest eatery, to sit beneath four apartments.

Sure would have been great if urban cincy broke that story...

^???  What difference does it make *who* breaks the story?

^It's a joke because I knew about this a couple of months ago.  The problem was that I didn't have any more information than the liquor license details and location.  The name would have been nice to have, as that is just about the only piece of information in here that is useful.

Anyone have a picture of the building where this bar is going? The more nightlife downtown, the better IMO.

All we need now is 5th and Race to start seeing some action and that quadrant of downtown will be really dynamic.

Fountain Square update:

"It's just fate, as usual, keeping its bargain and screwing us in the fine print..." - John Crichton

Man you are on top of things!  I walk through Fountain Square at least twice every work day and didn't see that sign yet.  Anyone have the specifics on what appears to be a Martini Bar?

With mynt in the name, I wonder if they will be selling mojitos as well?  :)

It will be great to have that space filled

They are on Twitter. Profile indicates a Fall opening; currently accepting applications.

Jean Ro Bistro's bar does pretty well in that category.

I've never been.  Thanks for the tip!

Kept digging... website http://myntcincinnati.com/ and their is some relation to Columbus' Mynt Ultralounge.

I've been to the one in Columbus once and I hope the one here will be much different. The one in Columbus is very much a night/dance club which doesn't fit at all in Fountain Square IMO...

I would anticipate it being pretty similar.  I've been talking with the owner and it sounds like the same concept to me.  Opening late October.

Well he did have some uncertainties surrounding its opening.  Stay tuned...I'll update as I know more.

I still want my Maker's Mark Room :(

This is great news.  I think downtown (and Cincinnati in general) needs a few more nightclub spots.  I think this will help liven the square up a bit on nights when there isn't an event, and into the night after events.

Can you imagine this spot on NYE?

I think we have enough now ... we need more hole-in-the-walls now!

These won't open up in DT.  This is what OTR, Northside, Clifton, etc. is for.

You see, this is where you're wrong.

Aren't /weren't places like The Subway (gay bar, I know) and the old Phoenix Cafe these holes-in-the-wall of which we're speaking?  I'd say they have a place downtown, just as they do in the city's other neighborhoods.

The Righteous Room is a bit more high profile, but it's more "hole" and "Ritz".  However, with all the reinvestment in Downtown, I don't see a quintessential hole in the wall opening up anytime soon.  That basically requires minimal reinvestment in a property, thereby retaining its grit.  Simply having exposed brick doesn't achieve that.

You think we "have enough"?? There's like 5 bars downtown, if we want to create a dynamic nightlife scene we're gonna need a lot more than that.  Think about Carson St. in the Southside of Pittsburgh, Adams Morgan in DC, Sunset Strip in LA, etc.  Mt. Adams is as close as we get to a true nightlife area, and even that is pretty limited, so I say the more bars downtown, the better.

Also, wouldn't some of the places downtown be considered hole in the walls? Madonnas, Rockin Robins, Tina's on W. 4th, Mr. Pitifuls (I know that's OTR but it still kind of counts), all come to mind.

Yeah, I'd agree with Rockin' Robins.  (I think they changed their name, by the way.  Same bar though.)  Madonna's might apply too.

I think it's pretty clear that I was pointing out that this niche that Mynt is filling ... we already have enough at the moment. Let's work on another genre. Nothing against NADA, Mynt, Twist, Bootsy's ... hell, I probably go to these places more than anyone on here.

I'm saying mix it up. You say Carson St., I say great example and solidifies my point to the T!

Haha.  I remember sneaking into the Spy Club when I was in high school.  I was going to grow up to be a house (the genre) DJ.

EDIT: And yes, I realize I just responded to a discussion from the first page, thinking it was a current topic.

Let's not forget omalleys in the alley, it's a pretty solid place

Would Tina's fit into the 'hole in the wall' category?

^Myrita is cool, don't be dissing

That place was just on the news like 2 minutes ago.
