There's a lot less bums around campus that's for sure. Except "Daniel" I think that's his name... he's everywhere.

I love all the new development regardless of popular opinion or not.  I think the campus and surrounding area mixed with old and new is fantastic.  Clifton has moved up to the top of my list of where I would like to live.  Since I moved here in 2003, the area has greatly improved IMO.

^They do have a waiting list.....local students that commute get last priority.  Many of these students are looking to live in and around campus...and UC is having to turn them down due to an extremely high demand for on-campus housing.

The above statement is based on Fall 2005 Data.  It is not yet true for Fall 2006.  UC is not turning anyone away from housing at the moment.  It is important that facts be presented in the right context--ie  using Fall 2005 facts for Fall 2006 is misleading at best.

^Sorry for the misleading statement...it certainly was not intentional.  I was simply using the knowledge that was at my disposal.  BTW....I was not that far off...its not like I was using data from 1990.

I heard from my boss that the next tenant after Salsaritas and Panera opens is a BW's    ...they said that they would start construction and be ready for the college hoops season....

Thats a great addition....especially since there really isnt any wings/sports bar type thing in the area.  Good deal, now lets get some other retail options in there (clothing, specialty, etc).

I have doubts about University park having retail....i hope but  there are proabably only 2-3 storefronts left after salsaritas and Bw's gets built...as for the BW's thing...it is nice to know that we don't have to drive into X country to get our wings we can now stay in bearcat land...the place will be PACKED everynight

There used to be a B-dubs on Short Vine back in the late 80's and early 90's.  They closed it down because the crime in and around it got so bad.

There used to be.  Big Red's Sports Cafe was quite a fine wing/sports bar type of place on Calhoun.  Until, like just about everything else, it got torn down.  Let's tear down the independent businesses and put in chains!  I love it.

Welcome to the board :)

Short Vine period has turned into a mess :drunk:. Those buildings are great and its proximity to UC should make that area really vibrant but it's such an annoyance to even go there anymore, except to go to Bogarts.

I wonder if Calhoun development will further its demise or bring it back.

Yeah, I've been lurking for a few months.

I guess nostalgia for Big Red's convinced me to finally sign up. =)

I was walking along Calhoun St today and a large banner is now hanging up in one of the empty storefronts that reads:

Buffalo Wild Wings: Coming Soon!

I guess they worked out the situation with the liquor license...hopefully that is sign of good things to come!

Yay! A good eatery that is geared towards college students. Nothing like a BBW to counter the over-priced but very nice Panera :)

Hey I'm employed by that 'over-priced but very nice Panera'...albeit 1 day a week   Come in and see me on Sundays everyone...I'm typically there around dinner time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Wahooo!

^ That's funny that you say that, because I go there every now and then and have thought about sending you a PM to see if you want to grab lunch since I know you go to UC.

Randy doesn't work for Panera; Panera works for him. He's the dude in the back counting money stacks. Hence--Mr. Big baller on CincyAlist being swarmed by ladies 24/7 8-) I heard Rando single-handedly paid off developers and banks to pull out of Calhoun street development as it would create competition for Panera. Crazy.

Randy = PIMP :-o

There used to be a B-Dubs on Short Vine in the late 80's-early 90's.  The crowd and crime got so bad they shut the place down.  But that was Short Vine.

^The 10 cent wing nights were on Tuesdays.  I cruised by once just to check it out, and there were hundreds of people loitering around the area, primarily black youths, but not spending money in any of the other area stores, which is why neighboring businesses complained about it and eventually got it shut down.

Yeah, I was going to mention the 10 cent Tuesdays, that was most of the problem.

I think the Tuesday wing special is now $0.30 or $0.35, but they still have it.

Good to see more businesses coming into that strip on Calhoun St.  I hope it's completely full soon.

However, I've still heard no news in months about the strip between Calhoun and McMillan.  Hardee's and Arby's still sit and nothing is happening.  I think it's a shame that this isn't covered more often.  A huge deal to tear down all sorts of businesses and property and then the money runs out and nothing happens?

Pro Tip:  Behind the new Arby's there are a few parking spots for the McMillan Park leasing office.  Feel free to park there for a short while...it's not as if anyone is ever in the leasing office.

Just as an update on the Buffalo Wild Wings going in...I have heard through the grapevine that it is going to be huge, and be their largest location in the city.  I think that is a good move on their part...they are going to be absolutely slamed!

They are right next to the University of Cincinnati, and have student housing only right above. It only makes sense. Are they taking up the remaining space available or something?

I'm not entirely sure, but there is a LARGE continuous block of retail space that could be used for the restaurant.  I don't think they will take up all of it, but only time will tell I guess.

BW's is moving along nicely...and appears to be on pace to open for the start of the school year (that would be smart).  I personally think that place is going to be a BOOM.  There aren't a whole lot of sports bar type places in the area, so this should do quite well.

I also heard that Gamestop has signed a lease for a space adjacent to BW's.  I didn't see any signs for this, but it's something to look out for.  This would be the first non-food related business, aside from 5/3, in the retail space area.

BW's is always a packed house near campuses. Reduced price wing night? Plenty of beers and television screens? Hot waitresses? Bingo.

^^^ Oh yeah ... B-Dubs is going to be slammed ... like every day.

A girl I'm good friends with might be a waitress at BW's when the open.

that place is PACKED every day since it has been opened. they basically have the monopoly on wing bars in clifton, there is none other that I know of.

There used to be a great wing place right across the street from BW-3's on Calhoun.  It was called Big Red's Sports Cafe.  MUCH better wings than B-Dubs.  It got torn down to make way for the nothing that currently sits there.

BW3s is open, nice draft beer selection

They have every right to purchase a unit in the new development. Just because they didn't, doesn't make it the developers (or BW3's) fault.

I went to bdubs last night ... it was absolutely slammed. There was a wait to get in. Great service and beer selection!

Yeah and I have every right to move into the Ascent but it doesn't mean I can afford it.

Calhoun Street is shaping up to be just like any other main street against a typical large state school. Chipotle, Potbelly, BW3, Panera, 5/3rd, Ben and Jerry's. How typical. The "upscale fast food" phenomenon. I guess I don't mind it that much; I eat there a lot for convenience so I'd be a hypocrit to complain about it but I do wonder how this will effect unique little restaurants/bars on McMillan and Ludlow. Perhaps we can sustain it with our increased enrollment.

To be honest...what is wrong with it becoming chain oriented.  I prefer the local guys as much as anyone, but really...how many urban districts are there like this in Cincinnati?  Great cities are great not only because they offer fantastic/unique local options, but also because they offer something for everyone.  As much as it may be despised...Americans love the chains, they like name recognition and familiarity.  You know what you're going to get at BW's or Panera for example.  There is a large demographic that craves these types of places...shouldn't we be looking to accommodate everyone?

We should, like I said, I'm just worried that they might put a few indie places nearby out of business. Chains have better management, better marketing, homogenized food and interiors (people like familiarity), etc. I would just hate to see a few independant places suffer from it. I understand that in a capitalistic world, it's survival of the fittest. Like I said, I go to BDubs and Currito regularly, and I'm not mad that they're there.

look at the gateway quarter.  they are taking a pro local approach to their retail and I think it will pay off.

And the local shops in the gateway quarter = an economic windfall for the area.  The chains are convenient and all, but not nearly as good for the city.  We could really use a strong indie retail/food association that could band together and work with developers.

Couldn't agree more...but in order to fill all of our business districts with local/homegrown stores it would take one of the most economically powerful markets in the world.

Bottom line is that local/homegrown stores can not survive in new construction like this...or like The Banks.  The only way it could happen is with massive subsidies and assistance (which is even there for the stores in the Q).

It's called "OVER THE RHINE" not "OVER THE Q"

I have no problem with calling that area the Q, or the area around mcmicken the brewery district, or east of sycamore pendelton.  they are all over the rhine, but these are the subnames/districts

Do you think somebody in Sharonville or some other strange suburb knows where the Gateway quarter or The brewery  District is? The OTR name MUST be included.  Brewery District-OTR  Gateway Quarter-OTR.  Lets gve OTR the positive light it needs and deserves.  Look at he title of this thread.  CUF: Calhoun St Project.

^I try not to talk to those people

Probably not, but I'd be surprised if people in Sharonville had heard of the Gateway Quarter or Brewery District at all, let alone know that they are part of OTR.  People in the suburbs tend to only care about the suburbs, and usually only the particular one that they live in for some reason.

The only reason this thread's title includes "CUF" is because that's where the project is located.

So I've been to the BDubs a few times and although the bar fun, their mixed drinks are higher than Arlins and Arlins hooks up you by making them quite strong. Now that I have a beater car, I noticed that it's really hard to find parking on Calhoun St. at night (I'm assuming due to the popularity of BDubs). I'm wondering, does the rest of the development planned for Calhoun involve a parking structure? (Maybe where there was once a parking structure across the street?)

There is both a parking lot behind the current development and a parking garage underneath it.  The parking garage is operated by the university and is sold out to yearly/monthly passes...but the parking lot on the other hand is operated by another entity.  I find the rates reasonable and if you are there for less than a half hour then it is free.

The new development across the street will also include an underground garage...but as for what was there before it was just a mixture of small surface lots.  Bear in mind that there was much less density there before University Park Apartments/Calhoun Marketplace came online.

Originally the area between Calhoun and McMicken was supposed to have a Banks-like number of parking spaces. Plans once called for more than 1000 spots buried underneath the park and condos that were going to be built. I don't see those kind of numbers now, but why not just take the 17 and walk a little bit.
