I found some of my old negatives and I had them scanned, thanks for the tip rob. Unfortunately I only found a fraction of what I had based on the number of scanned prints I have posted. You probably have seen a few of these before but not with this good of quality. The new ones I didn’t know I had and were on the negatives.

Give me today over 1985 Cleveland according to those pictures - except for that crowd in the Arcade (granted, it was for an event, but nice crowd)

Thanks for sharing - I love seeing the change!

1985 was a good year to graduate from high school.

Nice pics

Nice shots.

Check out the color of the "The Icy Cuyahoga" - makes me look at those FEB renderings in a whole new way...

In deed, it was a good year.  :-)

Those turned out quite nicely. It sure is interesting to see the changes that have taken place there!

is it just me or does the river look wider and less curvy at that spot?

Are the Hanna fountains still around? I'm assuming no..

No, they are gone.

Awesome!

I love the 80s

Wish someone could post pics of parties at the Flats (hint hint)

one year after I was born! Flats West Bank is pretty desolate!

god, i can only imagine how much fun the flats were back in the day:(

That part of the river hasn't been widened for several decades, but I think that it looks wider because Nautica/Scene Pavilion/PD Pavilion/Whatever wasn't yet built.

1985 was also a good year to be born

^ That is what I was thinking. The lack of density gives the illusion that the river is wider.

I love pictures that bring back memories. I know this isn't going to mean anything to you youngin's, but when you're 41 like me, looking back 23 years seems like looking back five years to a 23-year-old. The time passes so incredibly fast the older you get.

I was a freshman at Kent State and was really looking forward to that game. I rushed back to my off-campus condo to tape that game. I still have it on tape -- in BETA!!

It sure was. Any year of graduating from high school, traveling to Washington D.C. in the early spring for a high school radio station convention, taking the train to Arizona two weeks later, taking the train to New York City (including the WTC) and along the Northeast Corridor in the summer, and starting college in the fall. Living on my own for the first time. The music. The adventures. The parties. What else can I say?!?! 1985 was one of the best years of my life.

I always enjoy the Cleveland time machine.

Great pics of the frozen Cuyahoga and the lit-up hanna fountains. I've been thinking for awhile that the oxbow of the Cuyahoga would be a great winter ice skating rink, like a mini version of the Rideau Canal in Ottawa. Though I'm not sure of the last time the Cuyahoga was frozen solid.  IMHO, we could really use more outdoor activities in the winters here.

^I don't think that the Cuyahoga downriver of the steel mill has frozen solid since they started dredging it back in the 19th century; it's 23 feet deep.  Also, there is enough thermal load in the river throughout the year (mainly from the Southerly Treatment Plant and Mittal) that it won't be stable enough for skating.  However, a better bet for outdoor skating might be the Ohio & Erie Canal.

I have seen the Cuyahoga frozen solid once, maybe twice since 2004. I think it was winter 03-04 that was solid, and then the following year, it looked like it, but was pretty thin. I assume when people say "solid" they mean strong enough to hold people as opposed to all the way through! Anyway, both times, the surface appeared very chuncky and rough. I  have also seen it freeze thin and smooth overnight, but it fall apart later in the day.

last winter was very mild, and it never froze. Maybe a few thin slabs here and there. I do not think the boat traffic stopped all winter and it usually does.

where were the Hannah Fountains located?

I LOVE old pictures of Cleveland.
