The future arrived in a bright flash of silver.

Sunlight glinted on steel and aluminum as Summit Beach Park unveiled its shiny new attraction in August 1957.

A sleek monorail train glided 9 feet off the ground on a 3/4-mile track along the eastern edge of Summit Lake.

A rubber company was having its annual picnic at the park when a group of monorail passengers became unruly, Morrison said. The guests demanded a discounted fare and refused to leave their seats when the ride operator declined to cut a deal.

''He couldn't reason with them,'' Morrison said. ''So he took them up on the monorail to a high point . . . He put the keys in his pocket, slid down the supports that kept the monorail up and went over to Cannova's and had him a couple of brews.''

very cool history.

however -- boy was the usa behind the time on monorails. the wuppertal, germany monorail dates to1901!

Interesting stuff. But I equate them with elevated trains. At least El trains can operate on any transit track.

Well, if we're talking monorail, then we've certainly got to hear Lyle Lanley's take on it:

Lyle Lanley: Well, sir, there's nothing on earth

Like a genuine,

Bona fide,

Electrified,

Six-car

Monorail!

What'd I say?

Ned Flanders: Monorail!

Lyle Lanley: What's it called?

Patty+Selma: Monorail!

Lyle Lanley: That's right! Monorail!

[crowd chants `Monorail' softly and rhythmically]

Miss Hoover: I hear those things are awfully loud...

Lyle Lanley: It glides as softly as a cloud.

Apu: Is there a chance the track could bend?

Lyle Lanley: Not on your life, my Hindu friend.

Barney: What about us brain-dead slobs?

Lyle Lanley: You'll be given cushy jobs.

Abe: Were you sent here by the devil?

Lyle Lanley: No, good sir, I'm on the level.

Wiggum: The ring came off my pudding can.

Lyle Lanley: Take my pen knife, my good man.

I swear it's Springfield's only choice...

Throw up your hands and raise your voice!

All: Monorail!

Lyle Lanley: What's it called?

All: Monorail!

Lyle Lanley: Once again...

All: Monorail!

Marge: But Main Street's still all cracked and broken...

Bart: Sorry, Mom, the mob has spoken!

All: Monorail!

Monorail!

Monorail!

[big finish]

Monorail!

Homer: Mono... D'oh!

Edit: I completely missed J3shafer's comment on North Haverfield. Sorry for stepping on your toes! D'OH!!

Just play the song. It's a classic.

haha.

yeah, of course i am biased toward 'take the a train,' but the simpson's monorail song has got to be the best public transit related song ever.

and to think it's not even the best simpsons song either (that would be the planet of the apes musical with rock me dr. zaius). that's how great the simpson's show is.
