Posted August 14, 200816 yr downtown & recent sultry, rainy summer days in beautiful fort greene, brooklyn. enjoy!
August 16, 200816 yr thanks for the fantastic pics. I haven't been to that area for many years (before gentrification had fully taken hold)--and that was only for BAM and Junior's. I've been meaning to go to that mall for ages (for the Target), maybe now I'll make the trip (Except I always found that subway/LiRR station so damned confusing!) Also, isn't that the big new flea market everybody in the neighborhood is complaining about? http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/
August 16, 200816 yr Very nice set, mrnyc... I love me some Brooklyn, the human-scale New York. In many ways, Brooklyn and Philly seem as though they were separated at birth ... Interesting to see the abundance of empty streets/sidewalks in the nation's "4th largest city". I thought that only happened in Cleveland.
August 18, 200816 yr ^ nope, that's quite on purpose -- in reality the streets are plenty crowded. it's just that brooklynites don't really like to have cameras pointed at them and i am not going to push that. you really have to chitterchat with people, dance a little, point the camera away and keep it moving believe me. if i just pointed the camera straight in front of me....well, impossible! Also, isn't that the big new flea market everybody in the neighborhood is complaining about? yep. my spouse is addicted. info: http://www.brownstoner.com/brooklynflea/
August 18, 200816 yr Gentrification or no, it looks like there's still lots of flavor and character. I love the colors in this shot:
August 19, 200816 yr Good job. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
August 21, 200816 yr Nice pics MrNyc. It's unfortunate certain forumers are too good for meeting up with other forumers to give tours of their city when they're in town ;) I know a lot of Brooklynites feel these towers are doing violence to their small scaled neighborhood but I actually like them. Considering they give developers small lot sizes to work with, they tend to be 'mini skyscrapers' and I actually dig the proportions. I wonder if there's a height limit on buildings in brooklyn. I don't think anything above 30 stories should be approved, especially the farther away you get from Manhattan. I would LOVE to see tons of these towers go up as long as they can work around the traffic congestion. Increase the supply and you eleviate demand. Then David could afford to live there some day :)
August 22, 200816 yr ^ nope, that's quite on purpose -- in reality the streets are plenty crowded. it's just that brooklynites don't really like to have cameras pointed at them and i am not going to push that. you really have to chitterchat with people, dance a little, point the camera away and keep it moving believe me. if i just pointed the camera straight in front of me....well, impossible! Just a little tongue 'n cheek, mrnyc; I know Brooklyn is light years ahead of Cleveland in terms of people. Still, compared to Manhattan, it''s much more laid back, unhurried and (again) more human scale. After I participated in a conference at Brooklyn college last summer, a friend dropped me off at a subway stop that eve for the trek back to my Manattan hotel -- we sat at a street corner (forget the street, but on the 2-3 subway line, for nearly 10 mins (and several traffic light revolutions) and not a single auto drove by and there was but a trickle of foot traffic... I commented that Brooklyn, at least this particular part, almost seemed "country" compared to Manhattan... I like it... That's why I say Brooklyn is much closer to Philly than it is Manhattan, from which the overwhelming majority of NYC visitors never venture.
August 22, 200816 yr ^ haha i know. man, you were way out there. i had some interns from bklyn college so i have been out there a bit myself. it's certainly nothing like around downtown, or even other 'out there' neighborhoods like eny or bay ridge.
August 22, 200816 yr wow, I used to live right on the corner of Dekalb & South Oxford... what a trip! It's amazing that the WSB tower is now nearly lost among the tall trees... Nice to see Elly's hasn't "gentrified" their beautiful new storefront at all!
