I was thinking about this post this morning as I watched 2 RTA transit police (complete with arm sleeve tattoos and wrap-around Oakleys) ticketing cars in the bus lane on Clifton.     I'm all for the bus lanes on Clifton, but this seems like a horrendous waste of resources to have 2 officers in a full-sized SUV performing this function.

They don't roll 2 deep. It was probably a field training officer training a rookie. Also probably making him write all the tickets.

Fair enough, but bad optics none-the-less.

In my weekday experience they are at least 4 deep at tower city. I can say that I’ve never seen one alone and that there is always at least two of them.

not trying to be argumentative just providing my weekday anecdotal experience.

I'm just specifically talking about how many officers they put in a zone car. I'm sure at tower city there's multiple units.

Like in Cleveland we have two man cars for code 1 and 2 priorities and one man cars that handle report runs and accidents. It doesn't mean that multiple one man cars won't show up to an accident or if there's a large accident a two man car won't handle it. It's just how we allocate bodies for assigned duties.

Everytime I'd do something with RTA all of their cars seemed to be one man cars, and they would just swarm one man cars to anything serious that involved their property.  Maybe that's changed since I last interacted with them and now have both one man and two man cars.

I do know they recently hired a bunch of new people though, which would require a lot of training officers hand holding them through probation.

Historically RTA fares have been a much lower share of revenue than MTA. In 2021, the most recent year I could find, fares tanked to 5% of revenue down from 20% a decade before.

And for another look, fares were $22 million in 2022 and $49.9 million in 2012.

Farebox revenue is listed as $26 million so I would assume so although I should have pointed out before that 2020 is not a good baseline year for comparisons and conclusions.

The 53 was running as a coach bus yesterday, not great!

How You Can Report Unsafe Situations in Real Time

Cleveland, OH – The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority Transit Police would like to remind everyone on how you can communicate unsafe or stressful situations while riding or waiting for an RTA train or bus by doing one of the following with your mobile phone: See Something? Say Something! or See Something? Text Something!

See Something, Say Something by calling 216-566-5163 connects you directly with an RTA Transit Police Dispatcher. When the dispatchers receive your call, they will listen to what you are reporting and then ask you some questions to better describe the suspicious behavior. If action is required, the dispatchers will notify officers to respond. The dispatchers will continue the call until the caller feels secure.

See Something, Text Something at 216-575-EYES (3937) allows riders to discreetly ask for help from their mobile phone with an RTA Transit Police Dispatcher. When the dispatchers receive notification of the text, they will text back and begin “LiveChat” via text, with the person who texted them. If action is required the dispatcher will forward the “LiveChat” to the responding officers, and action will be taken. The dispatchers will continue the “LiveChat” until the customer feels secure.

“Safety is our number one priority,” said GCRTA Chief of Police, Deirdre Jones. “Providing easy to use, efficient and safe means of communicating suspicious activity is important, and we are continuously looking to new ways for customers to report unsafe situations in real time.”

Please add 216-566-5163 and 216-575-EYES (3937) to your contact list.

For information on RTA’s work to keep everyone safe please visit www.riderta.com/safety or www.riderta.com/575EYES , and also visit www.riderta.com/humantrafficking for information about RTA’s efforts to stop Human Trafficking

The Waterfront Line is back! Almost....

First trains run next week for the Browns' home opener. And will run only for Browns home games until next year when it will return to daily operation. At least that's the plan right now.

Last I saw the full reopening date was spring/summer of next year. Has that gotten any more specific or improved?

Are the new coaches they bought a few years back junk? I don't recall us having this issue with the 2400-2900 series buses (The regular coaches that were our main used ones before this order).

I know those buses are getting long in the tooth so that may be what's biting us in the butt now, I was just curious.

Welcome to RTA. A friend posted this on Facebook

What a clusterf*ck on RTA'S Waterfront Line this morning. First the first train was scheduled out of Tower City at 0930. It didn't depart until 0954. Then, it broke down at Setters' Landing station. Still waiting for its follower. You would think that RTA would have set up trains that were fully inspected.

^Its a good thing the boss just a got a huge $50,000 raise, otherwise she'd not be so inclined to do a good job and make sure things ran smoothly.

^^ Wow. That’s pathetic and inexcusable. I went by Settlers Landing station this morning around 10.45 and was pleased to see a train there and full of people. Now I’m hoping it still wasn’t that same train that broke down there almost an hour prior.

Question. Would it be a good idea to explore the possibility of having a station near West 25th and Detroit?

With that area already being busy, coupled with the guaranteed to be popular Irishtown Bend and the future investments that are going to come because of it, I feel it would be good to have a WFL station near it.

The West 25th street station is too far to be an effective rail stop for it and because of the dead zone between it and Detroit beyond bridge avenue the walking experience isn’t the best.

Are there old tracks that could be reactivated or would a major project have to take place?

A major project would have to take place, costing hundreds of millions of dollars.

So here's an interesting map that was shown at a recent TOD meeting. I cropped it to protect the innocent and maybe even the not-so innocent!

Hey transit enthusiasts - I'm working on setting up an AAO sponsored visit to RTA's rail maintenance facility on East 55th. I did hear back from RTA today and they asked how many people would attend. I have absolutely no idea, ha. So tell me - how many of you would attend a tour of that maintenance facility?

When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?

Yo! Count me in.

Crosspost from Bike Thread - Bike/Ped/Transit Coffee and Donuts tomorrow morning, happy hour Friday.

Beware RTA cards and their bulls**t expiration dates. I had a card from last month I hadn't used, so last night I tried to use it at Tower City coming from the airport. Its expiration date was early next year so it shouldn't be an issue, right?

And since there are no card machines on that side of the station, I couldn't even buy a new one to exit. The clerk had to unlock the gate so I could honor code walk past her to a working machine, then turn around and hand her the card.

What is this third world s**t???

And that red line trip had already been chaos with three loudmouths screaming at each other from Puritas to 25th, with one lady screeching about having 6 kids and shooting some bitch at work. Absolutely unhinged, attention-seeking animals.

Welcome to Cleveland.

Does RTA have the foresight to start a fund for trains and busses after the new ones become old so they’re not in this situation again? I’m leaning towards no.

They’ve explicitly said that they intend to do that, and that the lack of that was the major holdup on this round of procurement.

The event in the maintenance facility will go from 3pm to approximately 4:30. (The maintenance facility tour has some optional portions that require climbing steps.)

Rail riders should meet at the East 55th station on the Red Line platform at 2:30pm. RTA staff will meet the group at 2:40 and walk them over to the maintenance facility. The walk is roughly one half mile and has several sets of steps. Alternatively, guests can drive to the event and use the RTA facility east gate at 6200 Grand Ave, Cleveland OH. (Take Opportunity Corridor to East 75th, turn north, immediately turn left on Grand Ave, take that to the end of the road, and then enter through the RTA gate. If the gate is closed, use the call box to gain access. Proceed to the Central Rail Maintenance Facility Parking, and then enter the building at the east door by the loading dock. Maintenance facility tour will start at 3pm.)

If you're curious - yes, kids are welcome to join. Sorry that the time isn't particularly conducive for that. I'm planning to bring my kids (11 and 9 years old).

Please register by November 28 so that we can give RTA an approximate headcount:
