Disregard. The Cleveland Indians have rejected All Aboard Ohio's proposal and instead are hiring their own private shuttle bus to deliver to the ballpark fans parking behind the West Side Market. That's not going to work for Friday night or Saturday afternoon/night games when parking is at a premium in Ohio City. I've also posted this at the Ohio City thread, where I suspect this will add to the discussion regarding "parking problems" in that neighborhood. It's not a parking problem. It's a lack of awareness of transportation alternatives. Anyway, that parking discussion is here:

Why not just have them park in the Muni and have them take the waterfront line in? So the day after the PD has an article about parking problems in Ohio City, the Indians come out and tell everyone to park there? WTF?

^Boy, the Dolans (via Mark Shapiro) are sure taking a beating for this plan by sports talk radio, mainly WKNR.  Hosts are generally saying that the RTA plan (which personally, I think is forward thinking) is a cheap way for the Indians to divert attention to the fact the team isn't paying money to land bigtime free agents... Aaron Goldhammer, in particular, noted most people don't use the "Monorail" anyway; that he rarely does (from his Tremont residence) anyway, accept a few times to the airport where he said he had no complaints about the service.  Goldhammer noted how easy it was just to drive down and park before Indians games, and that there was little traffic...

 

... but thankfully after some Indians' fans/callers noted that the Rapid is convenient and that there is gridlock, Goldhammer was forced to admit:

 

a.  as a member of the media, he gets free parking, and

 

b. also because of that (working) status, he gets to Indians' games way early and stays way afterwards, so that he rarely has to experience much traffic... for this, Goldhammer gets the DUH!!!! award.

^WKNR is an ESPN affiliate, and I've noticed more and more that ESPN is agenda driven radio. Locally, the current agenda is incessantly crow about how the Indians need a right handed bat. To the extend that they do anything contrary to that 'mandate' from the radio station, they're going to bash it.

 

I'm surprised Goldhammer bashed it, though. Of all the dopes on that station, he apparently is the only one that doesn't live in Medina county, and usually has a positive urban viewpoint, to the extend they talk of those things on the air.

Anybody else excited about an August groundbreaking for the new Cedar Road - University Circle Red Line station?!

I didn't know that was happening so soon.  So yeah, I'm excited!

Yeah, I kinda like Goldhammer, too.  As a Denver guy, he often likes to razz Cleveland fans (and fans often fall for the bait).  He KNOWS the Rapid is not a monorail. I admire the fact he lives in the city.  Many of the (much younger) hosts on The Fan live in the City, too, esp in Tremont.  I get the feeling, though, few of them use RTA...

 

... but kudos to RTA to reaching out to our sports teams (Indians, LE Monsters) and supporting big events (like the 4th of July fireworks) to generate more transit use with these creative, discount programs.

But why is the reroute via Detroit Avenue? Why not stay on the Shoreway until West 25th, then cross the Detroit-Superior bridge?? And the routing back north to Lakeside is a tease for the majority of riders who exit at Tower City. Do RTA planners ride the buses?

The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA) invites local residents and businesses to attend a community meeting on the current status of the University Circle - Little Italy rapid transit station project. The proposed rapid transit station will be located on GCRTA’s Red Line on Mayfield Road between E 117 and E 119 St. It will replace the current station at E 120 / Euclid Avenue.

 

The community meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 31, 2012, at 6:00pm at The Alta House, 12510 Mayfield Road, Cleveland, OH 44106.

Summary:

8 buses southbound M-F from Cleveland to Fairlawn and  Akron

9 buses northbound M-F from Akron and Fairlawn to Cleveland

 

2 buses northbound M-F from Cuyahoga Falls, Hudson and Twinsburg to Cleveland

3 buses southbound M-F from Cleveland to Twinsburg, Hudson and Cuyahoga Falls

 

No weekend bus service.

 

Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad operates three trains in both directions on Saturdays and Sundays year-round (plus Wednesday-Sunday summer/fall) from Rockside Road in Independence to Akron Northside Station. The CVSR station in Independence is about a half-mile east of GCRTA's 77F bus stop at Rockside. The Akron Northside Station is served by a free Akron Metro downtown loop bus including to RKP Transit Center.

Tuesday's meeting included a presentation by City Architecture, an informational handout, and a call for comments to RTA by Aug. 14. You can make comments here, of course, but if you want your comments to be "official", then please make them in the manner specified on that page.

 

I could not attend the meeting, but I have an "informed source" (JetDog), who says the proposed designs were met with favorable comments.

I've only taken a quick look, and while this will obviously be a great addition to the neighborhood, the constraints of the site and budget are abundantly clear.  The narrow staircase (5 ft) to track level is not going to be so awesome with a single platform design.  There really isn't much room for grand gestures here, so it's all going to come down to the quality of the finishes, lighting, and construction quality to ensure the underpass and the station house are as awesome as possible.

I'm not a big fan of the look of those apartments, but it's still great news that they'll be built.

All projects of this type work the same way. RTA's Procurement Department issues a Request for Proposals (RFP), and interested parties download the information from our Web site. Those firms that are interested submit written proposals. The proposals are evaluated by an internal panel of 8-10 staff, and 3-4 of the firms with the best proposals are invited to make presentations to the panel. The panel selects a vendor. The panel makes a presentation at an open Board Committee meeting on why that firm was chosen. Price plays a part, but so does a proven track record in transit projects.

 

About 2 weeks after the Board presentation, there is a vote in a public meeting to select the vendor, and then Legal begins to draw up a contract.

 

I am looking now for a copy of the resolution to hire the firm, as well as the PowerPoint presentation to the Board. I hope to post those later today.

Speaking of Akron...

 

One thing I've noticed lately is that during the rush hours, one of the #90 buses says "County Line".  That's technically not true.  It misses it by about a half mile on Northfield Road.  Whenever I leave for work a little later than normal, I see 6 - 10 riders hiking south on Northfield to work.

 

Akron's agency also misses the line (which is at Sagamore Road). Its route stops at Summit Plaza.

 

Considering that about a quarter of a billion dollars is soon to be spent at Northfield Park, is it too early to start planning?

A trip on RTA's Green Line leaves traffic worries behind: George Zhao

At 10 p.m. on a recent Monday, the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority's Green Line train departs from Tower City Terminal, sending many fans, who had just witnessed the Cleveland Indians avoid a sweep at the hands of the Baltimore Orioles, back home along Shaker Boulevard. It is packed. It is loud. It is lively. Passengers who just barely made it to the train cannot find a seat. But standing is better than sitting in a car, caught in a traffic jam while trying to get onto the highway, right?

 

The train moves along, and the iPhone app measures its speed at more than 45 mph during its fastest stretch. Barely anyone gets out of the train in the first few stops, at the inner-city portion of the line. At Shaker Square, the last station in Cleveland, a noticeable number of passengers leave. Then another bunch gets off at Warrensville Station, which has a sizeable parking lot. Finally, just under 30 minutes since departure, the remaining people get off at the Green Station, the terminus.

Technically the 90F gets within 100ft of the county line at Broadway and Richmond. Not that it's helpful if you're trying to transfer to Metro, but still.

Akron Metro used to have a route that came up Broadway to meet Cleveland RTA's 90F at the bus turnaround area at Richmond/Shepard. That was axed probably 5-10 years ago. And Cleveland RTA used to come south on Northfield to meet Akron's 102 at Summit Plaza, Cleveland RTA chopped that route maybe 4-5 years ago.

 

So there were two Cleveland-Akron connections on the east side of the Cuyahoga River not too long ago. Now there are none. I think a Cleveland RTA bus link to Northfield "Racino" is an excellent idea. Maybe the Racino can sponsor it?

Just took the waterfront line (only person haha) from Northcoast to tower city so I could transfer to Green line. I really can't wait until its running full time. Does anyone know the frequency of the green vs blue line trains running thru waterfront when it was running full time?

Just speculating, but if they're heavy rail (Red Line) cars, it's likely some component of the overhaul project for those vehicles. It would not be unusual for some aspects of the overhaul to be conducted offsite.

CAF USA, one of the world's largest railcar manufacturers which also rebuilds passenger railcars has a plant in Elmira, NY. So even if it wasn't a Red Line car, it could have been bound for another customer in another city south/west of Cleveland. It may have just been passing through.

that's not a new bus.  in anticipation of expanding the trolley routes and hours of operation downtown, a few additional vehicles (the old red circulator buses) have been painted to look like a trolley.  but, as you noticed, there is no rear door and the seats are the standard bus seats.

I guess the cleanliness of them and the fresh paint made them appear new to me. And the obvious differences with the original trolly busses.

Well they are definitely not the same vehicles as in that picture.

I am a huge fan of the Highline and I am blown away by this effort. I wonder if there could be a Metroparks tie in somehow.

What exactly is the story for these empy rail paths?  There is one along the green line too and it looks like it even has the rapid power lines over it but its clearly abandoned.

The short platform at E. 105 is one of the more sensless moves by RTA; it only slows service by forcing everyone to go out the front door.  Why RTA did this while it was implanting POP fare payment to speed service is a befuddling, and just plain dumb.  RTA officials need to explain themselves on this one.
