^ Yes, overnight parking in designated areas at these two stations. I have a photo with the guidelines posted...looking for it now.

^ At Puritas, signs at each parking place state, "Overnight Parking allowed, 5 days maximum"

A much larger sign near the Puritas entrance states, "RTA overnight parking permitted in designated areas only."

These places were created at the request of the public. If you have a suggestion, state it here and I will pass it along.

Anyone have further details? Figured some of you might have some insight on which bridges are involved? What lift bridge does GCRTA own? Why are they mentioned??

Jerry, could you point out exactly where these spots are.  I did not see any signs about overnight stays.

I will admit that I was going to work and was not looking extremely hard, however I did see the security cam so I believe I was in the right area.  To the right as you exit the station, facing east, past the bus shelter.

^ Yes, the station is on the north side, and LaQuinta hotel is on the south side. As you drive east (toward W. 150) in front of the hotel, turn left into the last possible set of parking places. They are along an embankment on the edge of the parking lot. On the other side of the embankment is a car lane, for people to use who are dropping off a customer.

Response to KJP, who asked: "Anyone have further details? Figured some of you might have some insight on which bridges are involved? What lift bridge does GCRTA own? Why are they mentioned??

I checked. RTA does NOT own any of these bridges. OPINION: The ordinance could have been written this way to cover their tracks, in the event that they found some bridge owned by RTA. If our name was not included in the original legislation, then they would have to go back and amend it. It was much easier to include us in the first place.

I did see these spots this morning.  However I had thought that originally thought there were supposed to be 25 dedicated spots.  I saw maybe 10, none of which were in use.  It is great that RTA offers this service, I just want to clarify whether, due to demand, spots have been left open for now.

Thanks Jerry.

Thanks Jerry. An RTA planner also thought the city might want to tap RTA planners' expertise with bridges, automated signal systems, etc. A former planner thought it might also be to cover the city's tracks in case RTA operates regular route buses over any of the movable bridges, which I do not think is the situation.

My opinion? The city made a mistake.

There are also places at the Louis Stokes Station at Windermere in East Cleveland. I believe the "25" figure may have referred to the total at both Puritas and Windermere.

Does anyone know how many trains operate at once?

Does anyone know how many trains operate at once?

In what capacity?  You'll need to expand that question.

Trains on the Red Line, by hour?

Trains on the Green Line, by hour?

Trains on the Blue line, by hour?

Trains on all rail lines, by hour?

Then you have to add, are the "trains" being run in "single", "double" or "triple" mode?

Let me see if I can figure this out by looking at GCRTA's timetables....

At peak hours, eight eastbound and eight westbound Red Line trains are operating simultaneously. Meanwhile 12 eastbound and 12 westbound Blue/Green trains are operating simultaneously.

So 40 trains are operating at any given time during the morning and afternoon rush hours.

But that is not the system's capacity as GCRTA used to run trains twice as frequently as recently as the 1980s.

Well done, Clvlndr.

Thanks, 327.

FYI, RTA has 60 heavy-rail cars and 48 light-rail cars. You always want to have a few more cars than you need, so you can replace cars when they malfunction.

[code]New E. 55th Rapid Station official grand opening

CLEVELAND - After more than a year of construction, and seven years of planning, the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA) East 55th Street Rapid Station will officially be dedicated Tuesday, October 11th, at noon.

The $9.4 million, ADA-accessible station is not only an icon in the Slavic Village neighborhood, but will also be as versatile as it is aesthetically pleasing. Construction called for a move to the northeast corner I-490 and East 55th Street, making for a more visible landmark and providing easier access to pedestrians and vehicles.

East 55th is unique because it is one of the few stations that services the Red Line, as well the Blue and Green Lines, connecting east side and west side transit, along with linking bus-to-rail service.

The new parking lot and entrance allows buses and automobiles to drop passengers off right at the door of the station. Also new to the station is a center platform that allows convenient transfer between the Red, Blue and Green line transit without having to cross the tracks. At over 800’ in lengths, the platform was a major piece of engineering.

The modern design was selected to embrace the future of its surrounding neighborhood. The stone façade was selected to represent the many churches in the E. 55th vicinity.

Public art surrounds the facility, with the structure’s purple and cement façade serving as an art form in itself. Art featured includes a mural titled “Space, Speed and Time,” along with red figures that appear to move as your train arrives and departs the station.

During the development stages, a great deal of collaboration and planning took place between RTA and the Slavic Village Development Corporation, residents and stakeholders. Councilman Anthony Brancatelli was instrumental in the construction of the Rapid Station.

RTA Board meets October 11, 2011

CLEVELAND - The Board of Trustees of the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA) will meet for monthly committee meetings on October 11, 2011 at 9 a.m. in the Board Room of the Authority, 1240 West Sixth St., Cleveland, OH, 44113.

  • 2012 Budget Proposal – review and discussion of Capital Budget

  • Update on Fuel Hedging Program

Planning & Development Committee

  • Update on Authority’s public art program

Operations Committee

  • Presentation on public transit and job access

All RTA Board of Trustee meetings are open to the public.

Construction photo from earlier today. RTA is expanding the Westlake Park-N-Ride. The new section should open late this year or early in 2012. Granted, photo is not that earth-shaking (a construction pun), but I wanted to see if I am doing this right. If so, more photos will be posted on a regular basis.

Has RTA invented a time machine?  [if so, please dial back the train schedules to a time when Blue/Green line trains ran every 10 min to/from Shaker Square.  thankyouverymuch!]

Post more, you know we love photos on UO!

^ Typo has been corrected. I will see you all at W. 25th St at 6:30 a.m. Monday, helping passengers board the special buses and listening to their feedback. I may post some Viaduct photos before then.

Jerry, Photos with construction workers laboring on tracks with the skyline of downtown Cleveland in the background (zoom shot so that the construction workers look almost pressed against the skyline?) would be fantastic! If you take some great photos, I will want them for the All Aboard Ohio newsletter.

Maybe I could come out on to the bridge with you?

This was shot today. It is not the shot I wanted. I waited until late afternoon, but then I waited too long (6 p.m.) I thought Sun would set over the Flats, but it actually sets over Lake Erie, and shadows from Detroit-Superior Bridge got in my way. Here's the best I could do, I will be back later at a different time of the day.

... Computer just told me that my files are too large. I will reduce them at work (I am home now) and post them on Monday. I have to work at W. 25 until 10 a.m., so it will be around noon.

You should look into using Flickr or Picasa or another photo hosting site.  Ultimately it will be easier than re-sizing to accommodate the restrictions of the various places you may want to upload the pictures to.  You can then just paste the URL of the pictures you want to use and then highlight the url and click the "Insert Image" button when you're at the full featured post box (the one with all the menus, buttons, and smiley faces).

Here's some pictures I shot from the Detroit-Superior bridge. I climbed the railing a few times and shot between the metal rods to get photos. But it wasn't until I walked almost the entire way back from the highest point of the bridge that I realized my camera could fit between the vertical rods! Depending on my work schedule and the weather this week, I may go back (or encourage others to take pics too!)....

Just got back from working 3 hours at the West 25th Street Rapid Station, helping customers transfer from bus to rail and back. It was a smooth operation. There were lots of vehicles and lots of staff. I heard only one complaint. No one had to wait for a bus, there were always several ready to go. We expect a lot more riders on Tuesday and Wednesday. If you rode the Rapid today and want to share your experience, we'd love to hear from you.

First post for quite awhile:

How would one go about getting a bus stop moved?  My current company is on Clinton Road and has numerous employees who use the #81.  The stops (each way) were apparently randomly placed on Clinton (there are no cross streets in this segment) and they are a decent distance down the street from our entrance.

I'm hoping Jerry can help you.

But you're right -- Google Transit and Streetview don't show a single posted bus stop sign anywhere from the corner of Ridge/Clinton to the corner of West Boulevard/Walton. Maybe things have changed since, but Google Earth's path measuring tool shows that's a distance of 1.25 miles with no posted bus stops. There is a flag stop shown on Googlemaps at 7366 Clinton Road, but no road-side signs indicating a stop. And still, from 7366 Clinton to Ridge is 0.7 miles, or 7366 Clinton to Walton is 0.55 miles. Elsewhere along the #81, stops are placed every 0.1 to 0.15 of a mile apart.

You would think there would be at least a stop in front of the old Terex plant on Clinton!

When does the RTA plan on replacing the intersection lights in Cleveland like they did in Shaker Heights?

^ I am not sure what you mean. If you are referring to the signs along the light-rail Green Line, most of the above-ground rail is in Shaker Heights. The program was a joint effort of RTA and the City of Shaker Heights. If you can clarify your question, I will try to get  you an answer.

Thanks for the question. RTA has guidelines as where bus stops should -- and should not -- be placed. I will pass your note along to person who is in charge of such things, and he will respond to you personally. Please send your e-mail to me at [email protected]

The new East 55th Street Rapid Station was formally dedicated yesterday. The station has been in use for about a month. Please check it out.

I know I have commented on this before and I am usually not the one to pile on the design of something considering someones individual opinion is mostly subjective. And I know that RTA's strong point is not station design with the lost opportunity for example of the Euclid Cooridor stations and how poorly they function as a space and their weak attempt at protecting its occupants from the harsh Cleveland elements. But I do know one thing, the person who signed off on the color purple at the new e55th station does not (A) live across the street from it (B) does not live in a purple house © does not have a purple house in their neighborhood. To me it is just horrid.
