Posted August 16, 200816 yr A nice little town indeed. Post Office A unique Masonic Temple Conneaut Bell The Cleveland Hotel, recently added to the National Register Abandoned Carnegie Library  Town Hall
August 16, 200816 yr Nice-looking town. The only time I've been there was early on a foggy morning in October, 1961, to see the Nickel Plate Railroad's retired steam locomotives lined up at the railroad yard awaiting the scrapper's torch. It was too foggy to get any photos.

August 17, 200816 yr The green building in the 1st photo is my fave. Now that you've gotten all the county seats, what is the rhyme or reason behind the other towns you're covering? If you're going to any central Ohio towns feel free to invite me. If you want to get off the beaten track, check out Amanda near Lancaster (the only reason I know of it is family there that I don't visit).
August 18, 200816 yr Now that you've gotten all the county seats, what is the rhyme or reason behind the other towns you're covering? I'm basically trying to do every city and village in Ohio that is large or interesting enough to photograph. I find them various ways and end up with plenty of disappointments...but also plenty of surprises. If you're going to any central Ohio towns feel free to invite me. If you want to get off the beaten track, check out Amanda near Lancaster (the only reason I know of it is family there that I don't visit). You are a day late; literally yesterday I hit up some towns east and south of Columbus. Of course, that doesn't mean I won't return. I think I stopped in Amanda last summer going between Circleville and Lancaster but don't remember much of a business district; perhaps I need to check it out again.
August 19, 200816 yr Looks like it used to be a very nice place. The photos you shared makes the place look pretty vacant. Was it a bad day and/or time of day, or is this the typical scene there? Nice looking buildings are great, but they only take you so far...unfortunately.
August 19, 200816 yr ^These were taken on a Sunday morning, but I'd imagine from all the vacant storefronts that Conneaut isn't the liveliest place anytime.
August 19, 200816 yr No there really isnt much of anything left there anymore except for a few restaurants and bars. just 20 years ago it was still a thriving and active downtown. Every storefront was full. But the high paying industry is all but gone now. It didnt help that they built a new mall between Conneaut and Ashtabula (other downtown that looked even worse) complete with all the spinoff Wallmart/Super Kmart stuff. In fact this was the death knell and just sucked the remaining life that was left out of both downtown Conneaut and Ashtabula. It is truly sad, since Conneaut was a very nice town to grow up in. It does still have a pretty nice and active lakefront. Still a bit of shipping (ore boats). This is where the Hullet Ore unloaders were first used. Also there are still a few intact neighborhoods with some interesting houses. Still some awesome Italian places (stromboli everywhere!)
August 19, 200816 yr Ashtabula Mall down US 20 near SR 11 How do you pronunce Conneaut? I thought it was Con-E-Aught but I think I am wrong
August 19, 200816 yr Where do Conneaut residents go for shopping? Millcreek Mall? Why do I bother...... (from above) "It didnt help that they built a new mall between Conneaut and Ashtabula (other downtown that looked even worse) complete with all the spinoff Wallmart/Super Kmart stuff" Millcreek used to be the closest mall until they built the mall between Ashtabula and Conneaut. Mr. Sparkle that is how you pronounce it.

I grew up in Pierpont but went to grade school at Cabrini and still know many people there. My buddies and I reminisce about how vibrant the town was not 20 yrs ago (I'm 31). It breaks my heart to see it now whenever I get back. It's still pretty safe and it's still on the lake, i.e, it has so much potential.
August 20, 200816 yr I'm basically trying to do every city and village in Ohio that is large or interesting enough to photograph. I find them various ways and end up with plenty of disappointments...but also plenty of surprises. If you are interested in Ghost towns at all, Rogues Hollow is weird and interesting place, in Wayne county. Lots of other little towns with old downtowns around there that have benefitted from Akron sprawl too like Doylestown, Wadsworth and Canal Fulton.
