  • massive team effort & big win on espn vs okc tonight — awesome game and superb coaching and substitutions — anyway, i watched most of it out, but the end back at our dystopian atlanta hotel - 😂🎉

  • Great win! Six-and-one!! Great to see Garland and Mitchell together for a full game. Those two are going to be magical as they play together more.

NBA Power Rankings: Embiid and the Clippers click, while the Knicks hit their stride

The new year is just around the corner, and a fresh start means an opportunity for teams to reset, reevaluate and hunker down for the rest of the season.

18. Cleveland Cavaliers
2023-24 record: 15-12

Previous ranking: 16

Next games: vs. UTAH (Dec. 20), vs. NO (Dec. 21), @ CHI (Dec. 23)

The Cavs' starting lineup received a crushing 1-2 punch last week. Point guard Darius Garland will be out at least a month after fracturing his jaw during a collision with Boston center Kristaps Porzingis, and big man Evan Mobley will be sidelined six to eight weeks after undergoing surgery on his left knee. Cleveland responded, though, with two straight wins against Atlanta and Houston. But the Ewing Theory was supposed to cover only one marquee absence. It wasn't called the Ewing and Starks Theory. -- McMenamin

They may not be better with their stars out, but in a way they're more fun to watch, and they're winning, at least for now.

7 in a row for the garlandless and mobleyless cavs. impressive.

also, pete nance, former cav great larry nance’s son, made his nba debut vs the hawks. nice.

^ does that count out of state weed? 😂

mobley is back and whaddayaknow the cavs feel it right away — via espn:

CLEVELAND -- — Still not at full strength, the Cavaliers flexed on one of the NBA's hottest teams.

Donovan Mitchell had 28 points and 12 assists and Jarrett Allen extended his double-double streak to 15 straight games as Cleveland welcomed back Evan Mobley with a 118-108 win over the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday night.

Isaac Okoro added 17 points — all in the first half — as the Cavs held off a late comeback and ended L.A.'s winning streak at five. They also handed the Clippers just their fifth loss in 27 games since Dec. 2.

Cleveland, meanwhile, is 10-1 since Jan. 3 and the Cavs aren't quite whole.

Allen finished with 20 points and 17 rebounds, extending his franchise record for consecutive games with double digits in points and boards. The Cavs needed Allen to step up his game while Mobley was out with a knee injury, and the affable center has done that and more over the past month.

The Cavs went 14-4 without Mobley and point guard Darius Garland, who could be back from a broken jaw in a few days.

“It's a testament to our team,” Allen said. “It's a testament to (coach) J.B. (Bickerstaff) and the organization. We got guys who are willing to sacrifice.”

3. Cleveland Cavaliers
2023-24 record: 35-17

Previous ranking: 5

Next games: vs. CHI (Feb. 14), vs. ORL (Feb. 22), @ PHI (Feb. 23), @ WAS (Feb. 25), vs. DAL (Feb. 27)

Cleveland's nine-game winning streak came to an end Monday at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse, with Darius Garland's 3 failing to connect at the buzzer in a loss to Philadelphia. Winners of 17 of their past 20 games, the Cavs have charged up the Eastern Conference standings to No. 2. With a soft schedule over the next few weeks -- games against the Bulls (twice), Magic, Sixers (without Joel Embiid), Wizards, Mavericks and Pistons -- they should be able to create space between themselves and those below them. -- McMenamin

There’s an angle they prefer, it didn’t include the SHW crane but did capture the Stokes Federal Courthouse.  I think I have it narrowed down to a 20 year window.

I was at the gym today and was watching espn. Those initial skyline shots were certified LeBron era lol.

^ thats so annoyingly lazy of them sheesh. 🤷‍♂️

It is a nice shot, even though not current. The typical shot the networks use from Flats West Bank looks like there are only a handful of buildings downtown.

Was just coming here to post this!  Some crazy lead changes, we were hot and then cold and then just hot enough at the end for a play that might well get onto the ESPY shortlist.

I was at the game, unbelievable atmosphere

Multiple angles with sound

Just crazy last five minutes of last night's game.

If Darius Garland would've scored last night I would've hit a 10 leg parlay 😪

Super lazy job by ESPN on their Cavs/Knicks broadcast using old photos of downtown for their city shots - no sign of SW at all.

say, how’s about we up that bet and take two starters out? 😂

here we go nba playoffs — via espn:

4. Cleveland Cavaliers

Cleveland's road to the postseason
The Cavaliers have two strong interior defenders in Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley and a dangerous offense built around an All-Star backcourt of Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland. But those four players have missed a combined 87 games this season, capping them as a solid defense (115.0 points allowed per 100 possessions, No. 7 in the NBA) and an average offense (117.5 points scored, No. 17).

Biggest concern
Health is Cleveland's top question going into playoffs, particularly regarding Mitchell. Each of the other starters has played at least seven straight games and seems to be building toward playoff form. Mitchell, however, has missed 15 of his past 21 games because of injury and is managing a left knee issue. Even when he has played, he has averages of just 14.3 points on 33.3% shooting during those six games. If Mitchell can't provide his full offensive impact, the Cavaliers will be hard-pressed to advance beyond the first round.

What to watch in the first round
Mitchell vs. the Magic defense, led on the perimeter by Jalen Suggs. These two teams have split their four-game series during the regular season, and Mitchell was the key to every outcome. In the Cavaliers' two wins, Mitchell averaged 30.0 points on 48.8% shooting (44.4% from 3) with 9.5 assists and 5.0 rebounds. In the Magic's two wins, Mitchell sat out one game entirely and was held to 22 points on 6-of-18 shooting with 3 assists in the other. In this series, the Cavaliers will likely go as far as Mitchell can take them.

One postseason prediction
The Cavs will take down the Magic in six games or fewer. The Magic had an excellent season behind tough defense and relying on Paolo Banchero to provide the offense. In the playoffs, though, the Cavaliers have more scoring from the perimeter in addition to their defensive big men. I think Mitchell will prove healthy enough to play at his All-Star level, and he and Garland will be too much for the Magic to overcome.

Yeah Celtics are good lol. If Allen is back and Porzingis sits, mayyyyyybe Cavs steal 2. As ever, despite adding Niang and Strus, Cavs lack wing depth and shooting. Would be nice if 2022 Darius would make an appearance

yeah we have been wondering what happened to darius, but then suddenly he woke up at the end of game 7, didn’t he? he has to sustain that — imo he has the most weight of all on his shoulders for this series as far as performance expectations.

the only possible glimmer for this series is, unlike the knicks whose aggressive style rattles the cavs to no end, the cavs have been a constant problem for the celts. the rare healthy cavs that is.

Cavs need to play near perfect, get above average performances from garland and mobley and susperstar performance from Mitchell.  Not impossible, but odds are against them.  They have played Boston really tough the last two years since Mitchell has been here.  Boston is seasoned and tough, but never forget the 2009 cavs losing to Orlando, everyone had a Cavs sweep or in 5.  Lets see how the matchup goes.

^ they also need to have all star allen back or for sure it aint happening.

and wade would be nice to have too, but that can't happen -- he was a big spark when they beat the celts when mitchell was out.

the bench was useless.

This style of Cavs basketball is almost unwatchable.  If they aren't hitting 3's they just have nothing going on.  I honestly don't remember seeing an NBA team have virtually no offensive system. I mean, you see that when teams are tanking and don't have a point guard lol.

It's like Donovan has horse blinders on. And really who could blame him? He's going 1 vs. 5 and somehow just willing his way to the basket.

They were in the game somewhat until half time but it never felt like they had a chance. Garland couldn't make an open bucket to save his life, and got beat on the defensive end. I lost it when Marcus Morris missed a dunk by himself under the hoop.

It can all change tomorrow though. A bad shooting streak can end with a couple 3s and were back home 1-1.

^ and so it did!

ok so lets hope allen is available or it can't last.

just imagine if he was healthy, we would truly be neck and neck in this series.

Really missed Allen tonight.

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

A shame our pro sports teams never seem to get a break.  Although it was unlikely the Cavs were going to win this series, it would have been more interesting with everyone healthy.

I just don’t see what anybody can offer us that is better than keeping Mitchell another year. If they flame out again next year, so be it. But you’re not getting anything like fair value for him.
