^ via the AD deal, if the pelicans take the first round draft pick, then the lakers lose it, so that diminishes the lakers as the top choice in windy's scenarios. they have to make that choice to use it by june 1st. if they pass then the lakers have at least a first round and a second round pick to dangle.

  • massive team effort & big win on espn vs okc tonight — awesome game and superb coaching and substitutions — anyway, i watched most of it out, but the end back at our dystopian atlanta hotel - 😂🎉

  • Great win! Six-and-one!! Great to see Garland and Mitchell together for a full game. Those two are going to be magical as they play together more.

Cavaliers fire coach J.B. Bickerstaff after five seasons

Adrian Wojnarowski, ESPNMay 23, 2024, 10:23 AM ET

Despite the franchise's first berth in the Eastern Conference semifinals in six seasons, the Cleveland Cavaliers dismissed coach J.B. Bickerstaff on Thursday morning.

Bickerstaff, 45, ushered the Cavaliers through a rebuild, winning 99 regular-season game in the past two seasons, but the franchise now embarks on a search that it hopes will land a coach to take Cleveland deeper into the Eastern Conference playoffs.

also i think that makes it look like the cavs won’t bite the possible lakers draft picks or other teams for a big trade.

Yeah hard to read the tea leaves here. But it does make it seem like they think Mitchell is staying imo.

Caller on 92.3 this a.m. had a good point.

Before Mitchell got here the offense led by Garland and Rubio looked incredible, at least when the team was healthy. This in addition to an unconventional three bigs lineup and with significant production off the bench, everything clicking.

Was that more because of or in spite of JB?

Needless to say what I saw of the Cavs offense since the Knicks series last year has been borderline unwatchable, and this is a team with exciting talent! Very clearly the scheme was just was not working out.

^ thats true and also i think garland’s terrible broken jaw still affected him after he was able to play again way more than anyone discussed. he was just not himself afterwards. hopefully summer off helps him get his smooth groove back.

It’s odd because that team with Rubio and garland was very nice to watch and markenaan spread the whole thing out.  They needed height on him and it created so much space for everyone .  Of course they had to trade him for Mitchell but it did present some issues with offensive flow.  But that’s ok the coach to figure out.  Golden state didn’t suck when they had curry, Thompson and Durant,  they made it work (albeit not as pretty as it was in 2016)…but it’s on the coach to squeeze as much about of the group as he can, and JB unfortunately wasn’t doing it.  He’s a good guy and helped the franchise a lot but if the goal is a title, they had to move on

Great point. Unfortunately the last rumor I heard was that Garland did not want to stay if the Cavs signed Mitchell. The idea that these two can't play well together pains me and, if that is true, should probably cost Koby Altman his job.

Who could get the job: ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported that a name to watch in Cleveland's search is Kenny Atkinson, the former Nets coach who has been Steve Kerr's lead assistant with the Golden State Warriors the past three seasons. Atkinson, who will turn 57 on June 2, received lots of praise for the job he did with the Nets, developing several young players -- including current Cavaliers Caris LeVert and Allen -- while turning Brooklyn into a playoff team. He also is known as an offensive coach, having worked under both Mike D'Antoni and Budenholzer, and could potentially bring more organization to that side of the ball for the Cavs.

Cleveland Cavaliers hiring Kenny Atkinson as new head coach: Reports

https://sports.yahoo.com/cleveland-cavaliers-hiring-kenny-atkinson-as-new-head-coach-reports-141736415.html

His teams in Brooklyn were also pretty bad, so hopefully he was a just a victim to bad GM'ing.  I remember the team being fun to watch and massively outperforming expectations when they made the playoffs led by DeAngelo Russell, Spencer Dinwiddie, and a young Jarrett Allen.

Then in the offseason, the Nets gutted the team to make cap space to sign Kyrie and KD.  Kyrie played 20 games and KD played none in their first season, and Atkinson was fired midseason despite going 28-34 with Joe Harris, Dinwiddie, Taurean Prince, Jarrett Allen, and Garrett Temple leading the team in minutes.

seems like a mediocre hire. a little desperate. no doubt they saw some things they liked so ok. hopefully mitchell is happy with it.

Let's see how it goes. The NBA is now a players league. It's all about keeping the key players happy. We were skeptical about the Guardian's choice for manager, but that seems to be working out OK.

There weren’t many candidates available with HC experience. I can’t speak to Atkinson vs Borrego and who would be preferable of the two though. Word is Dan Gilbert preferred Atkinson…

cavs get a good, big sg at pick #20 —

improved, but consistence ?

per espn —

Jaylon Tyson

6'6"218 lbs

California

17POS RK

31OVR RK

Pre-Draft Analysis

Strengths: Tyson is a big, versatile guard who nearly doubled his scoring average at Cal to lead the Pac-12 in points per game (19.6, from 10.7).

Weaknesses: He lacks high-end length and explosiveness, and he will likely need to scale down his shot selection and decision-making in a more compact off-ball role at the next level.

The verdict: Tyson was one of the most improved players in college basketball last season. He put the ball in the basket in a variety of ways, putting pressure on the rim and showing growth as a pull-up 3-point shooter. His consistency off the ball on both ends will be a point of interest moving forward. -- Jonathan Givony

Post-Draft Analysis

The Cavaliers land a NBA-ready wing player in Tyson, who should be able to slide into Cleveland's rotation next season and contribute off the bench. After multiple college stops, Tyson finally put himself on the map as a prospect in his season at Cal, vaulting himself into the first round. Having Tyson, who can score, create plays for teammates and shoot from range as a contributor on a rookie deal, fits Cleveland's current timeline nicely and bolsters the depth of a competitive roster. -- Jeremy Woo

8:54 a.m. ET: All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell has agreed to sign a three-year, $150.3 million maximum contract extension with the Cleveland Cavaliers, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. The deal includes a player option for the 2027-28 season and gives Mitchell a chance to satisfy the NBA's 10-year service criteria, which would allow him to pursue a five-year extension in 2027 that could be worth more than $380 million.

well, good — keep dm happy …

New Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Kenny Atkinson continues to put the finishing touches on his coaching staff and his latest addition is a massive one.

According to multiple reports, Atkinson has plucked New York Knicks associate head coach Johnnie Bryant to join him in the same role with the Wine and Gold.

It's a key addition for Cleveland considering Bryant's extremely tight nit relationship with Cavaliers star Donovan Mitchell.

10. Cleveland Cavaliers

Notable additions: Jaylon Tyson (via draft), Kenny Atkinson (head coach)

Notable departures: J.B. Bickerstaff (head coach)

Are the Cavaliers willing to pay the luxury tax? ESPN's Brian Windhorst suggested as much in last week's Hoop Collective, which will be necessary for Cleveland to re-sign 3-and-D wing Isaac Okoro, the top remaining restricted free agent on the market. Thus far, the Cavaliers haven't replaced Okoro, adding only No. 20 pick Jaylon Tyson. That makes Okoro's return a necessity, but even his $12.7 million qualifying offer would push Cleveland into the tax. With the Cavaliers apparently bringing back last season's roster almost entirely unchanged, it's up to new coach Kenny Atkinson and development from Evan Mobley to improve floor spacing. -- Kevin Pelton

Cleveland Cavaliers' Future Called Into Question In New Rankings

One NBA analyst is not all that enamored with the Cleveland Cavaliers' roster for the future.

Matthew Schmidt | 5 Hours Ago

The Cleveland Cavaliers are a young team and are hoping that their future is brighter than the past couple of years have been.

However, ESPN's Kevin Pelton does not necessarily think that will end up being the case.

Dan: Make this hap[pen   -  Women's National Basketball Association: The ownership of the National Basketball Association's Milwaukee Bucks is reported to have submitted a proposal to bring a WNBA expansion team to Milwaukee. The WNBA wants to add one more team in its current round of expansion to reach 16 teams by the 2028 season. Other markets like Philadelphia, Austin, Kansas City, Miami, Central Florida, Nashville, Charlotte, Denver and possibly Cleveland are said to be under consideration.

4-0 and this vs the knicks — 🙀💥🎉

Key moment

The shot of the game didn't count. After the Knicks missed their final shot of the first quarter, Mobley grabbed the rebound and passed to Mitchell, who took one dribble after the buzzer and casually fired in a one-handed shot from around 85 feet.

big congrats to the cavs 5-0 and they sure spread the scoring out well. what a game with lebron and bronny homecoming. and bronny scored his first nba bucket. nice.

Wow, that's pretty cold. I understand why he's there. But he also suffered cardiac arrest so he's lucky to be alive, let alone playing basketball anywhere.

mitchell bazinga! 💥

7-0  🎉

any update on caris levert sore knee?

Only four teams in the West are below .500. Cavs have played nine of its 12 games against the East so far.

Maybe the East isn't winning as much because the Cavs are in it?? Yeah that's my story and I'm sticking to it! 😎

The best start to a season in NBA history was the 24-0 start of the 2015-16 Warriors.

But the second best start, achieved twice, was 15-0, by the 1993-94 Rockets and 1948-49(!) Capitols.

To equal that, the Cavs have to beat the currently-sub-0.500 (but not by that much) Bulls and Hornets.

To beat that, though, they need to win those two games and then beat the Celtics in Boston.  That one will be a war.
