  • massive team effort & big win on espn vs okc tonight — awesome game and superb coaching and substitutions — anyway, i watched most of it out, but the end back at our dystopian atlanta hotel - 😂🎉

  • Great win! Six-and-one!! Great to see Garland and Mitchell together for a full game. Those two are going to be magical as they play together more.

^ Now I wonder how Romeo Travis made that roster..

Here's my idea for expanding the Cavs fanbase. Apparently they have a d-league team in....the desert somewhere. Hello, buy a d-league team and put it in Columbus. This seems like a no-brainer. That way, you can send people down and pull people up easy and you grow the overall Cavs brand in the its growing big city.

The only problem is that the development league is not really a minor league. Basketball players don't develop like baseball players. There is a very good chance that no one from the Rio Grande Valley team will ever play in Cleveland.

Well the one saving grace for the Cavs in regards to them not having a draft pick this year is that we never really used/saw Shannon Brown.  So essentially, he is our pick for this year.  He's likely to see more playing time and has  played well in the summer league.  Everyone says we need a scorer, hopefully he can be that guy, because everyone knows he's athletic enough.

I liken the NBDL to NFL Europe.. if one of the players makes an NFL roster he's likely gonna list his jersey on Ebay from that season as "Like New Condition, No Grass Stains."  Just like in the NBA, you don't really have players from there become regular players.  Now, teams are increasingly using the NBDL to send their rookies down there to get playing time because they can't crack the rotation, but these stints are usually no longer then a game or two before they're back with the team.

that Analogy doesn't work anymore! (NFL Europe folded last month)

Shannon Brown got sent to d-league and he's ripping it up this summer!!

I still think it'd be a good move. You just co-brand the d-league team like the Cavs, put them in Columbus. That's the thing that bothered me about the hockey farm teams in Cleveland -- their players never went to a place like Pittsburgh... It was always some far-off team. The Blue Jacket's farm team could be in Cleveland, too.

He never played in an actual game in the NBDL however.

Yeah he did, in the middle of the season he went there, played a game and then flew back to Cleveland to play in another game the very next night for the Cavs. I remember distinctly because Austin Carr and Mike Brown commented on how hard-ass/old-school that was.

http://hoopedia.nba.com/index.php/Shannon_Brown

Brown was assigned to the NBDL's Albuquerque Thunderbirds on March 2, 2007 but was recalled by the Cleveland Cavaliers only a day later, having never played an NBDL game.

My bad, I pulled up the box score and it says he did play in that game.. guess the site lied.

Varejao likely to stay

New deals mean well drying at PF

The Cavaliers did not make any trades or sign any free agents a day after the signing period began, but the Cavs and their fans may have received their best news of the off-season late Wednesday night.  The Memphis Grizzlies, once believed hot on the trail of Cavs restricted free agent Anderson Varejao, made a three-year offer to Orlando Magic forward Darko Milicic on Wednesday night and Milicic accepted the offer, according to the Memphis Commercial Appeal.  The first-year salary is about $7 million.

More at www.cleveland.com

I saw this on ESPN Insider at www.espn.com:

Sources indicate that early talks between the Cavs and Varejao revealed the sides were far apart on money. Now the Cavs have significant leverage, which could further slow the process. If the two sides cannot agree on a long-term deal, Varejao can sign a one-year contract for the Cavs' qualifying offer of $1.3 million.

He's a great actor, he should stay!  He has a potential second career on stage at Playhouse Square or the Cleveland Playhouse!

...We'll work on the hair later!

Yeah, maybe some acting classes will help with his flopping and he can learn to play "an NBA player with a jump shot"

I love Andy! I've been watching a lot of the soccer lately, and I can see where I he learned to flop around so easy.

From ESPN Insider at www.espn.com:

Bibby Trade Talk On Again

Jul 13 - The Mike Bibby trade talks between the Kings and Cleveland Cavaliers have resurfaced, according to a league source.  Although the discussions between Kings basketball president Geoff Petrie and Cavs GM Danny Ferry have temporarily stalled -- all indications are they will continue -- a three-team deal appears to have come close to taking place.  Though all of the terms of the deal are not known, the source said Bibby would have gone to the Cavaliers for forward Drew Gooden, while San Antonio center Jackie Butler also would have been sent to the Kings.

Go for Bibby!!!

Another short paragraph about the Cavs from www.espn.com:

The Cavs, according to NBA front-office sources, are getting even more serious than they were in February to assemble a deal that lands them Mike Bibby.  The Cavs, sources say, would have to send Drew Gooden to Sacramento in any deal for Bibby, which would make re-signing restricted free agent Anderson Varejao even more of a priority for Cleveland than it was a week ago.  Yet Varejao is said to be strongly weighing the prospect of calling off negotiations this summer and invoking Cleveland's $1.3 million qualifying offer for next season, because the sides are so far apart in negotiations.  If he chooses that option, Varejao would become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2008.

Apparently a day makes a difference.. now ESPN insider claims trade talks are off:

Trade Talk Off Again

Jul 14 - The on-again, off-again, on-again trade discussions with the Sacramento Kings about point guard Mike Bibby are off again, according to several sources close to the situation.

Varejao Looking For The Big Score

Jul 14 - On the Anderson Varejao front, one league executive told me yesterday: "This is going to be one to watch."  He meant for entertainment value, in a sick, detatched way.  Andy's agent, Dan Fegan, is looking for the big score.  I'm talking about something like $9-$10 million a year. I believe the Cavs are offering something much closer to $6 million a year.  You don't have to be a math major to know that is a wide gap.

More at www.espn.com

damn it.  we need some eye candy to watch.....ah I mean an experienced point gaurd!

If Varejao is just looking for money.. screw him, sign him and trade him for someone who wants to be here.  If he wants to waste his career in Memphis instead of playing for a championship, let him.

Cleveland Cavaliers guard Shannon Brown scores minutes in the NBA summer league

Sunday, July 15, 2007

Branson Wright

Plain Dealer Reporter

Shannon Brown, not Daniel "Boobie" Gibson, spent his rookie year on the bench this past season.  It was Brown, not Gibson, who was the Cavaliers' No. 1 pick in the 2006 NBA Draft.  It was 2006 second-round pick Gibson, not Brown, who was the star in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals to lead the Cavs to the first NBA Finals in franchise history.

Brown insists he had nothing to prove during the Las Vegas Summer League that ended for the Cavs on Saturday night.  But it was Brown, not Gibson, who was leading the Cavs' summer league team in scoring at 18 points per game before Saturday.

No way Varajeo gets anywhere close to $9-10 million per year. If that was the case, he would be making more than the man he backs up, Drew Gooden, who makes around $7 million per year. Varejao is a good energy guy, but he cannot score, cannot defend, and will be significantly less valuable if the NBA institutes the much discussed no flopping rule.

From an ESPN Insider Rumor about Portland making additional deals:

Hedo Turkoglu for Joel Przybilla trade has absolutely no legs ... A team desperately looking for a point guard? Cleveland, who perhaps would be willing to deal Sasha Pavlovic. But Jarrett Jack is worth more than that ... isn't he? -- The Oregonian

Damn, a lot of friends disagree with me but I'd love to bring in Artest, provided he can get along with LeBron and accept his role as the Man/Leader/Pseudo-Deity.

This team could use a serious infusion of attitude.  A couple hard fouls on Parker (like they finally did to Jason Kidd in the deciding game against the Nets) and we might be celebrating a championship.

KS5214....I like the way your thinking!

I agree.. they do need some more defensive attitude.. HOWEVER.. we're nowhere near winning a championship without a legitimate point guard.. if people assume we're going to get back to the finals again this year by simply resigning Varejao and Pavlovic.. they're stupid.  I'm not saying get rid of the core of this team, but moves need to be made.  I can only hope that Shannon Brown plays more of a role this year now that he's healthy.

From ESPN Insider:

Quick Shots

Jul 18 - The Mike Bibby deal looks to be totally off. ... with the Kings signing Mikki Moore, they likely are no longer interested in Drew Gooden.

The Cavs believe the best way for the team to improve is through a trade, not the free agent market. Which is why they have been on the sidelines.

Right now, the Cavs are considering opening the regular season with Larry Hughes at point guard. They are exploring other options to be sure, but in the short term it may very well be the best option if the roster stays intact -- Akron Beacon-Journal

Cleveland Cavaliers to play on Christmas Day vs. Heat

Thursday, July 26, 2007

From staff reports

LeBron James and his Cavaliers teammates will spend Christmas at home this year - with a special present of a basketball game against the Miami Heat and James' good friend Dwyane Wade.  A Cavaliers source said the team will host the Heat at The Q on Christmas Day this year.  The day typically is reserved for the NBA's most intriguing matchups, with the L.A. Lakers versus Miami serving as a focus the last three years to showcase the Kobe Bryant-Shaquille O'Neal showdown.

Instead, the spotlight will be on James vs. Wade.  The Heat won last year's season series, 3-1, including a couple of wins while Wade was sidelined with a separated shoulder.  In the two games in which both played, Wade scored 41 points in a 92-89 victory at Miami on Feb. 1, while James scored 29 in a 103-79 Cavaliers home romp on Feb. 9.

Full NBA schedules for 2007-08 will not be released until next week.

Cavs, Ticketmaster battle over scalping rights

Posted by Plain Dealer Business staff July 30, 2007 17:56PM

John Kuntz/The Plain Dealer

Fireworks and flamethrowers explode during the opening celebration of the second playoff game the Q during the Cleveland Cavaliers game against the Washington Wizards.  The Cleveland Cavaliers and Ticketmaster are battling in court over the right to resell unused seats.

The Cavs last season launched Flash Seats, an innovative software system that allows season ticket holders to resell, track and transfer their tickets to the public.  Ticketmaster sued the Cavs on July 17 in federal court for the central district of California, claiming Flash Seats violated the company's contract to sell Cavs tickets.

Cleveland Cavaliers take Ticketmaster to court

Team, its Flash Seats sue on antitrust violations

Tuesday, July 31, 2007

Zachary Lewis

Plain Dealer Reporter

The Cleveland Cavaliers and a corporate cousin, Flash Seats LLC, are taking Ticketmaster to the courts.  The basketball team's operating company has sued, alleging that Ticketmaster violates federal antitrust law by preventing the Cavs from using Flash Seats, a Web service designed to let season ticketholders resell and transfer tickets to other fans.

The suit, filed Monday in U.S. District Court in Cleveland, claims Ticketmaster is engaged in an "ongoing campaign to utilize its substantial market power . . . to exclude actual and potential competition."  At issue is an item in Ticketmaster's contract with the Cavs requiring season ticketholders who want to resell their seats to use Ticketmaster's own resale operation, TicketExchange.

Wow.. so with Garnett going to the Celtics can anyone disagree that the Celtics are the team to beat now with Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, & Kevin Garnett?  Add in a young PG in Rando and they have a VERY tough starting 5.

On paper.  Question is.  How is going to run the show and will ego's collide?

Cleveland Cavaliers quiet in off-season

Thursday, August 02, 2007

Jodie Valade

Plain Dealer Reporter

All has been quiet on the Cavaliers' front this off-season, even as free-agent movement and blockbuster trades take place across the league.  The lack of noise doesn't mean the reigning Eastern Conference champions have been inactive in this off-season, though.  The Cavaliers were one of a handful of teams that tried to get in on the Kevin Garnett Sweepstakes, an NBA source said, even in the hours before Minnesota finalized the mega-deal that sent Garnett to Boston.

Cleveland, Chicago, Dallas and the Los Angeles Lakers all tried to wedge into the trade with serious offers, the source said, but no team could compete with the Celtics' offer that included potential in Al Jefferson, salary-cap relief in Theo Ratliff's expiring contract and a possible lottery draft pick.  Cavaliers General Manager Danny Ferry declined to comment on specifics of the Cavaliers' off-season maneuvers, but said they are aggressively pursuing avenues to improve.  Among those explored, a source said, is mild interest in a potential sign-and-trade deal for Golden State restricted free agent Mickael Pietrus, a 6-6 small forward.
